FUZZY LOGICLotfi A. Zadeh
A mathematician, electrical engineer, computer scientist, artificial intelligence researcher and professor emeritus of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley.
Quick Demo
• If you live in Ramallah area raise your hand• If you lived a happy life so far raise your hand
• A little bit• More or less• About• Usually
A way to make computers to make decisions more like human beings.
Definition
• A form of mathematical logic in which truth can assume a continuum of values between 0 and 1.
• The statement, today is sunny, might be 100% true if there are no clouds, 80% true if there are a few clouds, 50% true if it's hazy and 0% true if it rains all day.
Fuzzy Sets
• Model concepts and objects in the real world
Ex. Height of players in a basket ball team.
Fuzzy Rules
• Allows us to deal to situations that are not precise• Common sense rather than strict measurements • Words rather than numbers
Ex. Height & Agility which sport to play
If a person is tall and agile they should consider basketball.
If a person is short and broad they should consider wrestling.
Evolution
1965 Fuzzy Set1973 Fuzzy Logic
& Fuzzy Set Theory
1974 First Fuzzy logic controller
(UK)
1976 First industrial
application (Denmark)
1985 Japanese adopt Fuzzy
Control in key projects such as Sendai railway
1999 measurement ->
perception (natural language
processing) (CWW: computing
with words)
Some Statistics
• Number of fuzzy-logic-related patents applied for or issued in Japan: 22,541 (not updated)
• Number of fuzzy-logic-related patents (containing the word “fuzzy”) applied for or issued in the US: 33,022
Publications• 1970-1979: 563• 1980-1989: 2,375• 1990-1999: 21,554• 2000-2009: 44,462• 2010-present: 9, 696• Total: 78,650
