Chief Joseph was the leader of a group of Native Americans called the Nez Perce. In the 1870s the United States government told Chief Joseph to move his people away from their homeland so white settlers could have the land. Chief Joseph said they would not leave. In 1877 a war broke out after warriors killed some of the settlers.
Chief Joseph knew he had to find safety for his people, so he led them away from United States troops.
! This map shows the route taken by Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce people.

The army followed them for more than 1,000 miles. The Nez Perce warriors were tough and fought bravely, but more and more of them were killed.
Finally, Chief Joseph surrendered. He knew that fighting would not lead to victory. He said, “I am tired. My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever.”
This photo shows Chief Joseph in 1900.
