On a stormy night in mid-November we welcomed the QIPCO 2000 Guineas winner Kameko safely home to Tweenhills. The fastest 2000 Guineas winner in history and record-breaking winner of the Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes blew in to the farm after a 48 hour journey from Kentucky and settled straight in to his new life.Kameko is the horse we should all be breeding to. Not only a record-breaking Gr.1-winning miler at two and three, but by one of the most potent turf sires in American history in Kitten’s Joy. He now fills the stable vacant since his paternal half-brother, Roaring Lion, departed for New Zealand. He has the feet to fill the boots.

Perhaps the most pertinent view of Kameko comes from his trainer Andrew Balding:

“In my opinion he is the best and fastest horse I have trained. In two years he never once saw the vet barring flu jab and routine bloods. On Equinity he produced the highest top speed and fastest furlong of any horse I have trained and his stride length is a huge 7.4m. He is a complete dude with an extraordinary constitution and I can’t wait to train his babies.”

The sole reason he retires at the end of his three-year-old career is down to the commercial realities dictated by the times. He will be supported by the cream of the Qatar Bloodstock and Tweenhills broodmare bands and is the horse we have been waiting for.

He joins international Gr.1 sire sensation Zoustar who continues to enhance his already heady reputation and it’s a real coup for European breeders to have this world-class sire standing here again in 2021. His fee is outstanding value compared to what he commands Down Under.

The reviews we are receiving for his first crop of Northern Hemisphere foals match our expectations. We have bought several of his Australian babies through Hannah’s Redwall Bloodstock pinhooking venture, everyone turning a solid profit. Needless to say, we are really looking forward to seeing his first European weanlings at the December Sales.

His first two Northern Hemisphere books have been oversubscribed, are stuffed with talent and in 2021, he will again be limited to a book of 125 mares as we await his first European runners. There has probably never been a better opportunity to use such a proven success at such value.

Havana Gold’s biggest and best crop of yearlings to date sold superbly well and will make a massive impact on the racecourse next summer. Breeders should consider him a must at his reduced fee and we continue to support him to the hilt, whilst Lightning Spear’s first crop of foals and improved fertility make him tremendous value for those wanting to use this exceptionally talented, tough and durable son of Pivotal.

For the 2021 season, Tweenhills is proud to continue the ‘Your Success = Our Success’ scheme. Any breeder who produces a Stakes winner by a Qatar Racing owned stallion at Tweenhills – including Kameko – will be offered a credit for use against any Qatar Racing owned stallion in the following year to the value of the nomination purchased. Please visit tweenhills.com/success for more details.

Finally, whilst we are all keen to see the back of a torrid 2020, it’s worth remembering the positives and concentrating on the good things that lie ahead, and the good people that stand by your side. In no time at all Sammy will be calling with news of the latest night of foaling and Werner will be matching her with the calving; Scott will be marvelling at the yearlings’ progress; Ivo and Graham will be reassuring a nervous mare in the covering shed and Pieter will be praising and cajoling team and horses alike. Whether it’s Charles and Xander with the boys or Karen and her team in the stud office, everyone on the farm plays a crucial part in this wonderful business and have pulled together through this trickiest of years.

They are a credit to our operation, as our those that come through their hands and go on to further their education. They are all a source of pride. This is a wonderful business and we have much to be thankful for.

36 The Farm & Tweenhills Angus

Over the years, following it’s conversion to a public stud in 1995, Tweenhills had steadily expanded with the addition of five neighbouring farms. The first acquisition was Corsend Farm, which is now home to the Foaling Unit, another, Chargy Hill, is predominantly a yearling farm and Catsbury is home to the Isolation Unit. Most recently a further 60 acres of grazing was purchased at Hartpury Court with a new purpose-built barn for mares, and plans to renovate the historic barn next to the church into an events and wedding venue. There has also been investment in several outdoor all-weather paddocks, new winter barns, offices and reception area. Most recently installed is a three-furlong all-weather trotting ring for foal, yearling and stallion exercise.

Tweenhills continues to develop its reputation as an outstanding stallion station and farm, and is home to the Qatar Racing stallions, as well as the majority of the operation’s band of broodmares.

“The Angus breed is a world leader in the cattle breeding industry when looking for top quality output and manageable cattle.”

As well as producing it’s own oats, barley, hay and haylage, every acre is farmed in rotation with our large resident Aberdeen Angus suckler herd numbering 200. Tweenhills Angus Beef is produced from the grass fed herd and expertly prepared and packed by the farm’s local butcher. Among the regular clients of Tweenhills Angus Beef are Gloucester Rugby Club and a number of local restaurants. The beef has a wonderful rich depth of flavour with a fine marbling texture that the Aberdeen Angus is renowned for.
