Welcome to BlackpoolMessage from the Festival President
There are key dates in our Festival’s long history and 2012 is one of them. With sixty Festivals having past it feels like a new beginning at this, the 61st. The organising committee has been largely reformed following the retirement of most of its members at the end of the 2011 Festival. Our new Secretary is David Gee, a well known figure in North-West hockey circles, and who has seized the opportunity to lead a festival he has attended for many years and which is dear to his heart.
The new committee has a number of young, energetic and committed enthusiasts and it has met a number of times, deciding to maintain the successful formula of recent years but with the addition of a number of new features. I am sure those of you who have been to past Festivals will spot the new ventures and we hope you will approve of them.
We have had an association with Blackpool Cricket Club, to mutual advantage, since around 1970 and you will find this year truly amazing new social events centred at their Club!
There a number of bodies who sponsor and encourage the Festival and without this support the Blackpool Festival would not enjoy its reputation as a major event in the hockey
calendar and a spectacular finale to the regular hockey season. These bodies and individuals are mentioned elsewhere in this programme which I encourage you to read thoroughly.
Time and time again players tell me how much they appreciate the Festival having a large group of qualified and reliable umpires. This year there is a pool of 27 and I want to stress my appreciation of all they do. I would mention particularly the Sunday evening Umpires’ Dinner when via ‘fines’ and generous donations goodly sums are raised each year for specific charities - Help the Heroes last year.
I have attended every Festival since 1965 and have a feeling this year is to be really extraordinary. Enjoy!

Official Programme 2012
NEW LOOK FOR 2012Blackpool Easter Hockey Festival Committee, would like to welcome you all to the 61st Blackpool Easter Hockey Festival!
With a new committee and a new look this year, we still promise the same hockey, beer and banter but with a much greater emphasis on the social aspect of your tour. We trust you will all have a fantastic weekend and appreciate the changes that we have made to improve your Blackpool experience.
The most noticeable change you will find is that there is no longer the need to travel to Lytham which was always an inconvenience. Without doubt, the most exciting addition to the Festival is the new social marquee. This is situated next to the Cricket Club and our thanks go to them for supplying this venue along with DJs and live bands on the Friday and Saturday nights. Another new addition is the informal pre- tour get together on Thursday night. This is a chance for early arrivals, local teams and umpires to sample what the rest of the weekend holds. If this is a success, we plan to make this an official extra night from 2013!
We have also secured several new sponsors and partners (both local and national) and we hope to add to this list next year. However, our proudest achievement to date is our partnership with Blackpool Carers Centre; a local charity which provides support for unpaid carers in Blackpool. We aim to raise as much money as possible over the weekend, with a target of £5000. We hope you will support all the various fundraising ideas we have put in place. Any voluntary donations would also be greatly appreciated.
A tremendous amount of hard work has gone into organising this year’s event, and a special thanks must go to David Gee, Simon Allen, Debs Huyton, David Wright, George Robson and Clive Dennis. Without their help, the Festival would never get off the ground.
Now all that remains to be said is that we hope you enjoy the hockey, the changes and all that Blackpool Hockey Festival has to offer. And we look forward to seeing you all back in Blackpool in 2013!
David Gee Festival Secretary
