•Understanding design, system and interactivity as well as player choice, action and outcome.

•A study of rule-making and rule-breaking, complexity and emergence, game experience, game representation and social game interaction.

•The power connection between the rules of a game, the pleasures games invoke, and the stories they tell.

THE GAME EVOLUTION

MMX3043 L.F.M.I. 2014 10

Progress in the areas of GRAPHICS, SOUND, CONTROLLERS, TECHNOLOGY and MULTIPLAYER have affected the way players experience games.

For these five different categories, a milestone from the classic and contemporary eras has been selected, along with a title that best represents that period.

THE GAME EVOLUTION: VECTOR GRAPHIC

MMX3043 L.F.M.I. 2014 11

First introduced in 1978’s SPACE WARS, vector graphics were a popular alternative to sprite-based rendering.

Instead of dividing the screen area into pixels, vector-based games used a light beam that drew bright and complex images (both 2D and 3D) onto the screen by rapidly creating a series of connected lines.

The downside was that these visuals had to be composed of wire frames rather than of solid objects.

THE GAME EVOLUTION: SOUND

MMX3043 L.F.M.I. 2014 12

Sound effects and music heighten the realism of the overall experience by drawing you in ways you often don’t realize.

In the early days, video games’ sound effects consisted of little more than ELECTRONIC BEEPS, but soon these beeps were strung together to form simple tunes.

The THEME SONG from Donkey Kong and Pac Man, as basic they are have become ingrained in the minds of many gamers who grew up in the early 80s.

THE GAME EVOLUTION: CONTROLLER

MMX3043 L.F.M.I. 2014 13

A game controller is a device used with games or entertainment systems to provide input to a video game, typically to control an object or character in the game.

Page 14: INTRODUCTION OF GAME DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

THE GAME EVOLUTION: TECHNOLOGY

MMX3043 L.F.M.I. 2014 14

The development and release of laser-disc technology occurred at a time when video games were just beginning to take off. In just a few years, the industry had transformed from a “fad” to a full-blown craze.

Arcades were still where you could find the best games, with home systems striving to catch up. In hindsight, it was only a matter of time before someone made the CONNECTION BETWEEN LASER DISCS AND VIDEO GAMES.

THE GAME EVOLUTION: MULTIPLAYER

MMX3043 L.F.M.I. 2014 16

Multiplayer is a mode of play for computer games and video games where two or more gamers can play in the same game at the same time, co-operatively as a clan (or team) or head-to-head competitively (often referred to as deathmatch)
