    TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION The International Air Transport Association Is An

    International Industry Trade Group Of Airlines

    Headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, wherethe international civil aviation organization is also

    headquartered. IATAs mission is to represent, lead

    & serve the airline industry. The direct general &

    chief executive officer is Giovanni Bisignani.Currently IATA is present in over 150 countries

    covered through 101 offices around the globe.

    HISTORY

    IATA was formed in April 1945 inHavana Cuba. It is the successor to theinternational air traffic association, founded in

    The Hague in 1919. the year of the worldsfirst international scheduled. At its founding,IATA had 57 members from 31 nations,mostly in Europe & North America.

    Today, it has over 240 members from morethan 140 nations in every part of the world.

    MEMBERSHIP OF IATA

    The headquarter of IATA is located inMontreal (Canada).

    There are two types members o the IATA=>

    1. Active &

    2.Associate.

    Active members operate their flights at

    international levels.Associates members are the domestic airlines,which operate within their own countries.

    IATA APPROVAL MEMBERSHIP

    1. A copy of Air operator certificate, valid for 6

    months with original Stamp, Date &

    Signature by Issuing Authority.

    2. Certificate of registration with appropriate

    authority.

    3. Valid insurance certificate with aircraft type.

    4. Traffic statistics for processing 2 years.

    ACTIVITIES OF IATA

    For fare collections IATA has divided the world in threeregions:-

    1. South, Central & North America.

    2. Europe, Middle East & Africa.

    3. Asia, Australia, New Zealand & the islands of the PacificOcean.

    IATA has been providing world class airline & professionalflight crew training for many years.

    IATA is a member of the Air Transport Action Group(ATAG).

    IATA publishes the IATA rates of Exchange (IROE) fourtimes per year.

    AIMS OF THE IATA

    1. To promote safe, regular & economic air transport

    for the benefit of the people of the world to foster

    air commerce & study the problem connected

    therewith.2. To provide means for collaboration among air

    transport enterprises engaged directly or indirectly

    in international air transport service.

    3. To co-operate with the international civil aviation

    organization & the international organization.

    FUNCTIONS OF THE IATA

    The IATA acts as a protector of interests of the memberairlines. It publishes fares of various sectors in trade journals.It approves the travel agents. It gives the approved travelagents vital data related to air transport operations. It trains the

    employees of airlines in the vital area of air transport such asair ticketing, cargo handling etc. It also publishes statisticaldata related to air transport. Such data are used by airlines,,travel agents & tour operator to forecast the demand fortourism products/services in the future.

    The IATA binds its members with one spirit & takes care oftheir interests at all the international forums.

    Now a days, its operations & activities are fully computerizedreservation system (CRS).

    PERFORMANCE OF THE IATA

    The IATA has lived up to its reputation. Those

    travel agencies, which are recognized by the

    IATA, enjoy patronage (help) of large

    numbers of clients. Those agencies, which are

    not approved by the IATA, are deemed

    unreliable. This organization has also protected

    the interests in various areas. The IATA trainsstudents in airline ticketing, cargo management

    & other vital operations of air carriers.
