The Task

Your task is to gain a sufficient understanding of the Medieval era. You will research and analyze seven categories of information based on this period of time in history. Think of a mosaic, a picture or decorative design made by setting small colored pieces of paper, tile, glass or rock into a surface.(Dictionary.com).

You will gather information, answer questions and graphic organizers, participate with interactive activities, and complete a cooperative group project.Your teacher will assign your groups. Hopefully, you will be able to create a mental mosaic of this of this era. Your group project will be to design a time capsule of ten items from this era. You will write an explanation of each item and tell why you think it should be included.

Page 3: Introduction Picture in your mind a place in time when imposing castles stood high on the hills, valiant knights in armor protected all the citizens of

The Process Each participant will have a hard copy of a journal. In your journal you

will answer questions, transfer information to graphic organizers, and complete a variety of activities with information you gather from various web sites.

information

Tournaments were when knights would fight each other or capture one another for a ransom.

The rules set out for tournaments were very specific; such as: you were not allowed to capture another knight without warning them.

After King Henry II’s favorite knight was killed, he did not allow jousting.

Every suit of armor was made to fit each individual knight. An average family was able to live off of ten Euros and a

suit of armor cost about three-hundred Euros.

Information• Before a knight could become a knight they had to pass long,

hard and sometimes boring hours of practice.• The knight was one of 3 types of men fighting during medieval

times. Knights were generally the wealthiest. • When knights captured a city they were allowed to ransack it.

Stealing goods and valuables. • Certain knights had their own seat at the Round Table. Only the

bravest most noblest knights had a seat at the Round Table. Whoever did have a seat had their name carved into it. After all the knights were chosen for seats there was 1 left. This seat was reserved for the knight that found the Holy Grail.

• First (before becoming a knight) they had to be a “page”. If they did good as a “page” they became a squire. If squires were worthy they were dubbed and became a knight.

Music from the middle ages ( also called medieval music ) represents almost 1,000 years of European musical improvement and it is the ancestor to all later western music. The popularity of Medieval music lasted from about A.D 500 to about 1450. Since most of the music has been lost, we know very little about it. From the things people have written about the music during that period of time tell about many other forms of music. Church music is the only known music left composed before the year 1000. Many people of the Middle Ages sang chant, or plain strong. A chant is a single line of melody sung to Latin texts without harmony. In the middle ages many types of chant were used all throughout Europe. Listen to the songs above to answer the questions. Then go to the following sites and listen to the music. Feasts were considered a very important time for entertainment. People during the middle ages would have huge

feasts in honor of another king coming to their castle. They would try to impress other kings to make their castle look the

most elegant. They would have a lot of other types of entertainment like fools, circuses, music, and games. The

better the feast the more the other kings would like to come. For six thousand or so guests there were four hundred swans,

three hundred quarters of wheat, one hundred peacocks, thirteen thousand dishes of jelly, cold baked tarts, custards, and spices, sugared delicacies and wafers and much more

foods were readied. Now read a little more:
