INTRODUCTION

वि�द्या� परदे�ता� :- “education is god in the realm of practical world” The term ‘education’ in the broad sense is not only a

pedagogical one punctuating down to the basic meaning of the term, it means to plunge a mans body, mind and soul of ignorance . It enhances an individual’s personality and provides him confidence to reach out to the world.

Education is important not merely as means to other ends, but it is an attribute that is valued in itself, by most individuals.

Nursing education is the professional education for the preparation of nurses to enable them to render professional nursing care to people of all ages, in all phases of health and illness, in a variety of settings.

MEANING OF EDUCATION

• The term ‘education’ is traced to different sources of derivation.

• The term ‘education’ owes its origin to ‘Latin’ words.

• The word ‘education’ is derived from the word ‘educo’ which means ‘I lead out’. Here ‘E’ means ‘out of’ while ‘Duco’ means ‘I lead’. In other words it means ‘I lead out of darkness into light”

• The word ‘education’ is derived from the word ‘educere’ which means ‘ Lead out’. This implies ‘growth from within’.

• The word ‘education’ is originated from the word ‘educare’ meaning ‘To rear, to bring up, to nourish’.

ETYMOLOGICAL MEANING:-A) Latin Origin:- Educare- to nourish Educure- to lead forth Educatum- act of teaching

B) Sanskrit Origin:- Skis shah:- To discipline Vidhya :- “vidh” – To know

• “Education is the deliberate & systematic influence, exerted by the mature person upon the immature through instruction, discipline & harmonious development of physical, intellectual, aesthetic, social & spiritual powers of human being, according to individual & social needs & directed towards the union of the educant with his creator at the final end”

which involves the interplay of the educator, educand and the social forces to make an individual socially adjustable and responsible

I. INDIAN CONCEPT:-

“Education is something which makes a man self reliant and self less”.

Conclusion: • The western interpreters stressed on the growth and

development of the individual in relation to his environment.

• Narrow concept: Education is confined only to a few specific deliberate, planned, influences which have a bearing on the development of the child.

• Modern concept: There is a shift in the emphasis on national development from individual development. Education is not only an instrument of social change but viewed as an investment in the national development. Great educational revolutions achieve great economic evaluations.
