“Challenge 5 – Sustainable and Personalised Healthcare”

Aim: creation of an “intelligent environment” in which:

• the health status of any given individual can be monitored and managed continuously

• health professionals are assisted in addressing major health problems

FP7 Cooperation – ICTWork in Challenge 5 focuses on 3 main areas:

1. Personal Health Systems (PHS): key technologies, such as biosensors and secure communications, helping monitoring and management of health status

EU research funding targets:

• research into monitoring systems for patients with chronic diseases

• systems and tools which can be used for diagnostic purposes

FP7 Cooperation – ICT2.Patient Safety (PS): software tools to help decision

making with a potential effect on patient safety

FP7supports projects which seek to develop advanced ICT applications to improve risk assessment and patient safety.

Specific intervention areas may inlcude:

• safety of surgical interventions

• improving the interaction between clinical care and clinical research

• improvement of global health security

FP7 Cooperation – ICT3. Virtual Physiological Human (VPH): networking

multidisciplinary researchers in the fields of bio-informatics, genomics, and neuro-informatics to help create a new generation of eHealth systems to assist the ‘individualisation’ of disease prevention, diagnoses and treatment.

EU research funding targets:

• Development of tools to model and predict the effects of different treatment options in individual

patients.

FP7 Cooperation – ICTSpecific intervention areas may inlcude:

• simulation for surgical training, planning and intervention

• prediction or early diagnosis of disease by integrating patient history with biomedical imaging (from X-rays, scans and internal camera examination of the patient as well as microscopic examination of cells removed from the body)

• simulation environments for assessing the efficacy and safety of specific drugs.

FP7 ICT Projects III.Some examples:

• Action-Grid - International cooperative action on grid computing and biomedical informatics between the European Union, Latin America, the Western Balkans and North Africa

• ARTreat - Multi-level patient-specific artery and atherogenesis model for outcome prediction, decision support treatment, and virtual hand-on training

• ContraCancrum - Clinically Oriented Translational Cancer Multilevel Modelling

• euHeart - Personalised and intergrated cardiac care: Patient-specific Cardiovascular Modelling and Simulation for In Silico Disease Understanding and Management and for Medical Device Evaluation and Optimization

CIP ICT Policy Support Programme Aim:

supporting member states and stakeholders to ensure EU-wide interoperable health services.

Specific objectives for e-health:

• Enlargement of the pilot "epSOS" on eHealth Interoperability for patient's summaries

• ePrescription" and "Scaling up of eHealth services and supporting the EU eHealth governance initiative

CIP ICT Policy Support Programme

Some examples:

European Patients Smart Open Services project (epSOS): a European large scale pilot aiming at developing, testing and validating specifications for interoperability of patients summaries and ePrescriptions. It involves 27 beneficiaries out of twelve EU-member states, including ministries of

health, national competence centres and industry.

ICT PSP open until 1 June 2010.
