Problem-Based Learning

Pre-Discussion:

1. Reading the task and clarifying the concepts

2. Defining the problem

3. Analyzing the problem: brainstorming tocollect prior knowledge and best guesses

4. Analyzing the problem: structuring your

knowledge5. Formulating learning goals





Self-Study:

6. Self-study: identifying sources, studying,preparing report for post-discussion

Post-Discussion:

Evaluation





• Discussion leader

– Solves the task for the group

– Prepares in advance

– Guides/structures the discussion

– Makes sure the 7 steps are observed

– Enables participation by as many as

possible





• Secretary

– Writes down everything anybody says, word forword

– Summarizes the most important points of thediscussion

– Writes down all learning goals

– (If necessary: stops the discussion leader if animportant point was missed)

– Posts the minutes on Eleum within 24 hours;earlier if at all possible





• Tutor:

– Relaxes, listens to music, has a good time

– Monitors the discuss

– Helps out if the group gets stuck orproceeds on faulty knowledge

– Early sessions: chairs the group evaluation

Assessment

• Three components of your final grade:

– Participation (20%)

– Mid-term paper (30%)

– Final exam (50%)

• Resits for all components possible




Participation

• Participation in tutorial groups is graded (by

quality!)

• There is hard presence requirement, but if

counts as a malus towards your participation• You can ask your tutor about your grade

• Volunteering as discussion leader/secretary

and doing a good job counts as a bonus




Mid-term paper

• 4’000 word essay

• Preparation: Find a fellow student whodoes not share your nationality

• Task will be announced at next week’slecture

• Paper due: Mon, Sep. 20, 12 noon

• Hand in via Eleum




Mid-term paper

• You and your co-author share thesame grade!

• Grading components:

– Formal requirements (25%)

– Understanding of the topic (35%)

– Quality of your argumentation (40%)

• Please, steer clear of plagiarism…




Final exam

• Friday, October 1, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.
