Is this what your lab looks like?
Lab Safety:
Principles and practices
employed to protect laboratory
personnel and the environment
from exposure or infection
while working with living
organisms, biological
materials, or agentsX
Lab. Facilities and Safety
Back ground
• Lab. Function ?
teaching and research
• Important to:
Rule Lab. (standart)
Induction (new equipment and staff)
Sharing facilities of lab.
Occupational health and Safety (OHS)
SOP (Standart Operational Procedure)
OH and S Procedure, Responsibilities Staf
and Student
• Comply with safe working procedure: follow safe work
procedure established, OH&S direction
• Use of appropriate personal protective equipment and safety system: where personal protective equipment, use other safety
and emergency equipment provided
• Asssist with the preparation of risk asssesment: when requested, assist the supervisor/staff
• Report OH and S problems:reprort worksplace hazard to supervisor
report injury or illness arising from worksplace activities

SAFETY ISSUESP E N I L A I A N :
I. Individual :
• UTS 30 %
• UAS 30 %
• Tugas praktek 20 %
I. Kelompok:
• Diskusi/kuis 10 %
• tugas terstruktur 10 %
• There is always risk!
–The risk must be identified
–The risk is evaluated
–The risk must be measured
–Plan to minimize the risk
Lab Safety
Goal:
Provide the highest practical protection
and the lowest practical exposure
Safe laboratory procedures and
training are needed for everyone!
Important of Lab Safety:
TO PREVENT:
– adverse health effects from exposure to chemicals/bio-
materials
– exposure to organisms, diseases, etc. in laboratories
– laboratory equipment hazards - if not maintained properly
Lab Safety Rules
1. Always follow the teacher’s directions and only do lab work when a teacher is present.
2. Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times. No Horseplay!
3. Do not touch any equipment, chemicals, or other materials until told to do so.
4. Do not eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum in the lab. Do not use lab glassware as food or beverage containers
5. Report ALL accidents to your assistance lecturer immediately, even if you think it is minor.
General lab rules• For the chemicals you are working with, you should
be familiar with:
– the standard operating procedure for using that chemical in
your lab (the protocol)
– the hazards associated with that chemical
– the Protokol/procedure required for using that chemical
– storage requirements
– waste disposal procedures
– the procedures to be followed in the event of an emergency
General lab rules (cont.)• Care and followed lab rules exist (Safety
Issues)
• Avoid working alone in the lab
• If you must work after hours or on weekends:
– make arrangements with others in the building to
check in with you periodically.
• Let someone know you are working alone, and make
arrangements to call and check in periodically.
– avoid conducting hazardous experiments during
this time.
