“During the Great Recession, exporters’ revenues actually grew by 37%. Exports are
responsible for nearly half of U.S. GDP growth from 2010 to 2011 and yet they only make up
13% of our GDP (less than China, EU, and Canada).”
The Metro Export Initiative
President Obama launches the National Export Initiative (NEI) with an ambitious goal of doubling U.S. exports within a five-year period.
The Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program launches the Global Cities Initiative (GCI), a joint project with JPMorgan Chase.
Los Angeles selected as the first pilot MEI city. The Los Angeles Regional Export Council (LARExC) works with Brookings to develop their metro export plan.

One Sentence Overview The Los Angeles Regional Export Council is a non-profit, non-partisan, membership-based organization serving the LA region to facilitate exports and attract, retain, and expand foreign direct investment to create jobs.
Elevator Pitch • The Los Angeles Regional Export Council is a Metro Export Initiative with a
strategic plan for regional export growth with the goal to create jobs.
• The plan sets out four strategies to achieve this goal, with LARExC overseeing the implementation of the business plan. The implementation is structured around guidance from a regional public-private team of board members, advisory board members, directors at large and strategic partners.
