    In this movie, Hela cancer cells,

    genetically engineered so that proteinin EGF receptor fluoresces in thegreen, are seen to be taking up thehuman growth peptide EGF. The EFGis tagged in the movie with red-

    fluorescing quantum dots so we canfollow its movement. This taking up ofEFG occurs at EGF receptors onfilopodia which are extending fromthe cell wall. Before this work, it wasnot known that EGF receptors are

    positioned out on such extendedfilopodia in cancer cells. This is notthe case in normal cells.

    We now know this is how cancer cellscan grab more than their share of the

    EGF peptide.
