Funded as limited liability company in Dec 2007 in GermanyFocused on Research, Development and Consultancy in

the areas of Digital preservation Engineering collaboration under IPR protection

The Role of VCoE for Standardization

The VCoE provides a unique neutral platform For concentration of preservation knowledge in

one single place As overview about all communities and networks

that have contributed to preservation (and generated standards)

For open exchange and information access by a knowledge base for all other organizations acting in preservation standards

That is open for contributing standardisation bodies in this area

That gives support in getting the correct information about certification and validation procedures

Intention of WP13 for Standards

22.10.14Database Preservation Standards4

Collection of preservation standards used in the different communities

Collection of preservation projects with standardisation activities and their respective results

Identification of communities applying preservation standards in their repositories

Assessment of the scope of preservation standards related to the OAIS model

Building of a common standards repository with community oriented search criteria

Page 5: INTRODUCTION TO THE APARSEN STANDARDS DATABASE Preservation Standards, Projects and Communities 22.10.14Database Preservation Standards1 Hans-Ulrich Heidbrink

Intention of WP13 for Standards

22.10.14Database Preservation Standards5

Including information about current productive use of the standards in the related communities their purpose of use

Certification criteria, procedures and services offered by any member of the community

Cross-community synergy analysis Establishment of a decision tree for the

applicability and perspective use of current standards

Gap analysis community related Requirements for missing standards to fill the

existing gaps

History of WP13 in APARSEN

Review of existing data bases for standards Selection of table criteria and user access

requirements Establishment of sourcing data model with

OpenDB Generation of form sheets from OpenDB data

model Data sourcing with the established form sheets Load process from form sheets to common

data base repository (OpenDB) Design of a web accessible data base model

The VCE Standards Repository

The Virtual Center of Excellence (VCE) offers a knowledge base for Digital Long-term Preservation. InConTec contributes in the Aparsen project with a Data Base about preservation standards.

Registration

The Standards DB does not require to register or to be logged-in to search or browse in the data base. Also feedback can be given without registration.

Registration and log-in is required to contribute to the data base

Structure

The Standards data base is structured in Standards Projects Organizations License models Others (Best Practice, Management Systems)

Browse Data base

The data base offers open and filtered browsing capabilities

Related to the previous mentioned structure in these structures can be browsed independentlyFilter mechanism can be applied during browsing in the Filter bar by selecting or deselecting the classification itemsThe show function gives the detailed description in the data baseRead more, opens the currently shortened section in filters or descriptions

Browse using Filters

22.10.14Database Preservation Standards15

Selected Filters show the numbers of records accessible by selection in chamfers . This information gets updated if multiple filter have been selected

Search Data Base

There are two search mechanism available in the Standards DB Facetted search

Gives the possibility to search for keywords that are known and identify a standard directly or might be used in multiple standard descriptions

Example Dublin Core, OAIS,… Filtered search

Allows to combine the facetted search with additional filter or search criteria

Example: Domain -> Earth science ; Subdomain -> Oceanography

Request Process

22.10.14Database Preservation Standards23

For the Standard DB new entry can be requested:• Select the the “New Request” tab• Fill-in as a minimum the

mandatory information requested:• Name • Email address• Name of the standard you are

requesting• Short description• Organization that maintains

the standard• Further information (link to

info)• VCoE validates and releases new

entries

Aparsen Standard Data Base activities have been synchronized with the Presto4U project.• Assimilation of used • Data model within the data bases• Taxonomy between the projects

• Exchange of sourced standards to refer on entries vice versa

• Direct links to database entries in the partnering data base

• Notification about new entries
