Background

Mission Critical Facilities Protection

Protection of mission critical facilities against a

fire event is achieved through:

- Early intervention (initiated by VEW)

- Suppression (initiated by VEW/EW)

Conventional practice for suppression system

actuation:

- Conventional spot-type smoke detectors

in a “Coincidence Detection” arrangement

Example of Conventional Coincidence Detection

Suppression actuation through Coincidence Detection of cross-

zoned spot-type smoke detectors

ASAT Calculator

Purpose:Recommend suitable VESDA Fire alarm threshold for suppression actuation, benchmarked against conventional spot-type smoke detectors configured for Coincidence Detection

ASAT Calculator is the first automated means of establishing equivalence between ASD and spot-type smoke detectors:1. Concept developed using CFD modelling tools2. Verified with extensive 3rd party empirical tests3. FM Approvals

FM Official Listing

ASAT Calculator is officially listed as an approved design tool in the FM Approval Guide, Chapter 14 (Electrical Signalling)

Use of ASAT Calculator

ASAT Calculator is applicable for ceiling and floor void protection in enclosures with continuous or periodic air circulation with different airflow patterns and magnitudes

• Telecommunication facilities, base-stations

• Computer/server rooms

• Offices etc.

Use of ASAT Calculator

• ASAT Calculator Fire threshold value

– predominantly used for Suppression system actuation with a pre-engineered VESDA coincidence detection scheme

– But it may also be used for:

– Evacuation annunciation and procedure

– Fire Brigade notification

– HVAC system shutdown or conversion to smoke mode

– Automated equipment shutdown

Benefits of Using ASD for both VEWSD and Suppression Actuation

Detect smoke early enough to allow time to:Investigate and respond before disruption to

business continuity, loss of assets or risks to life Avoid costly suppression release Avoid the costs of nuisance alarms

Ensure the most timely and reliable actuation of suppression:High sensitivity overcomes the smoke detection

challenges presented by smoke dilution (air movement and the scrubbing of filters)

Cumulative sampling ensures reliable detection in high airflow environments

Active sampling of ASD ensures consistent performance in a range of airflows

Avoid duplication of detection schemes by using ASD for both very early detection of smoke in high airflow environments and the control of suppression release Avoid the current practice in Datacom facilities of

using ASD for VEWSD in addition to spot-type smoke detectors for suppression actuation

Benefits of Using the ASAT Calculator

Proven equivalence to industry-standard spot-type smoke detector sensitivities (but improved performance)

Thresholds calculated to specific environmental parameters

Supported as manufacturer’s recommendations and validated by verification procedure as part of commissioning

FM Approved method of calculating fire thresholds for suppression actuation
