What is a WebQuest? What is a WebQuest? "...an inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information that learners interact with comes from resources on the Internet.”

- Bernie Dodge (Co-creator of the WebQuest model) Provides a structured approach that focuses on having students use web-based resources rather than finding them

Poor WebQuests…Poor WebQuests… Are based around paper-based worksheets that are simply

converted into web pages, possibly with links to web resources

Ask close-ended questions or seek to result in neat, convergent outcomes for students

Are of little personal relevance to students Are based around tasks/issues that do not address real,

authentic problems with applications beyond the classroom Do not interest, engage and motivate students Are pitched at too high or low a level for the target

audience (ie, not challenging enough or “crush” students) N.B. Vygotsky’s Zones of Proximal Development (ZPD)

Have poorly defined assessment/evaluation criteria (eg, rubrics that focus on quantity but not quality)
