Review for Call of duty: modern warfare 2

Introduction

Modern warfare 2 carries on the storyline from modern warfare on single player campaign. You play as a character called Private Allen at the start of the game; this character goes undercover in Russia for the CIA joining a character called Makarov. Makarov is aware of your presence and kills you at the end of the mission. This causes Russia and America to go to war. You are then put in the shoes of sergeant Gary “roach” Sanderson to fight the war.

Visual style of the game

World

The mission “no Russian” takes place in a Russian airport. You go undercover with Makarov and his terrorist group. The mission starts with a normal day in an airport until you walk out of the elevator. The airport goes from a normal scene to a bloody nightmare. The world changed throughout the campaign and you view different countries. You fight within a Brazilian favela, Russia and America.

You start the campaign off as Private Allen; you learn the basic controls in “S.S.D.D” where you shoot targets. Private Allen is then killed by Makarov the Russian terrorist when he realises that you are undercover. The NPC’s in this game are the USA army and Makarov.

Feedback

On the main menu it gives you a percentage on how far you are on the game for the campaign, special op missions and multiplayer. However during the gameplay you cannot see how well you are

doing, you have to go back to the main menu to see how far you’ve gone on the campaign or special ops. On multiplayer it tells you your level and it has a yellow bar along the bottom which shows you how far you are away from the next level. When you are in a game lobby, you can look on your barracks and see exactly how much experience points (XP) you need to progress up the level system.

Perspective

This game is a 1st person shooter that puts you in the shoes of a soldier; it gives you the experience of what can happen in future wars to come.

Use of FMV

The campaign uses FMV’s for the beginning of most missions; the FMV shows you what part of the world you’ll be in for the next mission. It gives you a better understanding with what’s happening. It allows you to understand the scenario before you start the mission. If you skip the FMV’s then you may find yourself doing tasks that you don’t

understand why its making you do it. For a better experience i recommend that you watch these FMV’s because you will get a better understanding of the storyline.

Game playSingle player- the single player story line carries on from the previous call of duty modern warfare, it allows you to carry on the story where you left of on the last one. You start off giving a tutorial to new soldiers; this is the opportunity to get used to the sensitivity and controls for the game. After the tutorial you have to run the pit, this is where you run through the pit shooting the targets but looking out for civilian targets. The next mission you have to clear a school from enemy targets. You then have to travel to the extraction zone to head to the next mission.

The next mission is called cliff hanger, you have to sneak through an enemy base planting C4 in various locations, blow them up and fight your way to a snow mobile and escape. The next mission is called no Russian, you team up with a Russian gang undercover and take out all the civilians in the airport, this is done to get police attention on a huge scale and wipe out the Russian police. The leader Makarov is aware of your presence and kills you at the end. You start with a new character on a mission to take down Makarov. You have markers on the screen that show you where to go and how far away the target is, every time you reach the target it moves to n=the next area to help you along the mission.

Difficulty- you have 4 difficulties to choose from, these are recruit, regular, hardened and veteran. I recommend recruit to beginners because it allows you to get used to the controls and sensitivity of the game. For people that regularly play call of duty that you play on hardened, you have less life with makes it harder for you to play. For all the hard-core gamers, I recommend that you play on veteran; it will push your ability to the full because your life is so low and it makes you be more strategic on the game rather than running straight through on an easier difficulty.

Multiplayer- the whole point in the multiplayer is to play against other people and completing the game modes. You have different game modes such as search and destroy, team death match,

headquarters, team tactical, domination and demolition. Every time you do something effective for your team you earn experience points that allow you to go up levels, when you reach level 70, you have the choice to prestige, this means you go back to level 1 but change your level picture each time you prestige. The maximum prestige is 10th. It allows you to keep you interested in the game and makes it more

challenging.

Rules- there’s not many rules for this game because it stops you doing the things that the creators don’t want you to do, such as leaving the map. When you come to the end of the map you cannot run any further or you run into the toxic zone which kills you if you stay in there for a few seconds.

Addiction- this game can be addictive, everyone wants to get to the 10th prestige as quick as they can when the game comes on sale, this means playing it for a long time each day to get ahead of everyone else. The game makes you keep playing because of the level system, you want to go up levels and receive better weapons to use. It makes you feel like you don’t want to put the controller down and keep playing the game.

Feedback- it gives you an after action report which shows you how well you have done in each game, during the game you have a score bar which shows

you how your team is doing compared to the other team and how close one team is to winning.

This is where the score is shown on the screen; if you press the back button you can see the leader board and how well you are doing. It shows you how many assists, kills and deaths you have had.

Goals- the goals in this game are to do help your team by planting bombs, capturing flags and killing enemies to get XP to go up levels to receive new weapons and perks.

Task 2- impact of games on societyExcess playing time- this can lead to lack of sleep because of the amount of hours you may find yourself playing a particular game. You may find that school work will take a back seat when a new game comes out because of the competitive nature within the game to get to various stages before your friends do. Excess playing time can affect your health because of the lack of sleep and exercise. From looking at the screen for a long period of time, you may start to get headaches from concentrating too hard.

Social isolation- social isolation may occur for the first few weeks when a new game comes out, this is because you want to reach high levels as fast as you can before others do so, this can lead to you being separated from society because of staying inside to play a game for a long period of time. Single player games will have more of an effect on social isolation because you don’t require other

people you may or may not know to help you to complete a certain mission. Playing on multiplayer allows you to communicate virtually with other people.

Cost- the cost can be high if you’re someone that wants the latest consoles and games. Companies bring out new consoles to give you a better gaming experience and to make money. They do this by releasing games for a specific platform to make you by both game and console to play the game. You may need to buy a subscription to play online which is about £40; this has been set to make money because the majority of people buy the game to play online. PlayStation have released this subscription only for the PS4, the PS3 is still free to play online whereas every XBOX console you need to play in order to play online. When games first come out they are starting to get very expensive, the average price for a new game is around £50, when you compare this to the average minimum wage (£6.50) you have to work 8 hours to buy one game. The majority of people can’t always afford to buy the games but feel the pressure from society to buy them because friends or work colleagues may be talking about the game and how good it is.

Separation from reality- this occurs with games that you cannot perform in real life such as grand theft auto or assassins creed. Some users when they go back to reality think what the character they play as would do in their situation. Some users may forget how to do things in reality and try to perform the actions from a video game.

Sports games allow you to play as someone from the top level of the sport; it gives you an opportunity to play at the highest level which most people won’t have the chance to do this in reality. Shooters are similar to sports games because it also gives you the same opportunity to put yourself in the shows of a soldier with no risk of you being physically harmed. MMO allows you to compete against others around the world; this makes games addictive because you want to beat everyone else within the game lobby.

Psychological effects

A lot of people play the game for fun because they enjoy the gameplay or the visuals to the game. A lot of people free roam on GTA because you can do anything you want with few limitations on the game. A lot of people prefer this side to it because they don’t want to get competitive on the game and play it casually.

Peer pressure affects you a lot because all your friends could be planning to go on the game to complete a certain mission or free roam together, they might say things like “we need your help” or “no one else knows how to complete it” this makes you want to play with them because they’re your friends and you want to help them. Peer pressure occurs within the gaming industry without people knowing. You also want to be known within your friendship group as the best at the game, this can make you competitive to finish a level first or to complete the game before anyone else.

A lot of people battle to make it to the top of the high score listings, this is the biggest prize that the majority of games offer as a reward. To be the best it means you have to play an extreme amount of hours to keep your place at the top.

Educational value may come with a game and you haven’t realised that you’ve learnt something; simulators are a good example of this because you learn how to do something before you experience it in real life. Some games you are aware of the learning behind it for example the brain

training has a series of games to help train your brain and increase your knowledge. People bought this game because they want to learn.

Levelling has a big psychological effect because everyone wants to be the highest level which means you will find yourself playing a long time on the game trying to beat friends or other people online, games include the levelling system to make you addicted to the game and to keep playing/ buying add-ons for the game, for the call of duty series once you reach the highest level you can enter prestige mode which gives you a different emblem, you will be reset back to level 1. The battle on call of duty is to reach the highest prestige.
