Background about Blomberg Rhythmic Movement Training (BRMT)

Rhythmic Movement Training is a motor training program founded on the natural rhythmic movements of the infant. These spontaneous rhythmic infant movements are of fundamental importance for the motor, emotional and intellectual development of the child and are necessary for the maturing of the brain. These movements stimulate the brain for the development of nerve connections and the maturing of the brain, which is essential for the development of so-called executive functions, such as attention and impulse control, the visual skills of consensus and accommodation, and for the development of speech. They also integrate the primitive and postural reflexes. Skipping these important stages may impede motor development so that the child has problems with coordination, balance and stability. In adulthood, it causes many problems both physically and mentally.

The rhythmic exercises were originally developed by Kerstin Linde, who worked as a self-taught body therapist for many years. Dr Harald Blomberg followed her work for a few years in the 80s and then used the method in his work as a psychiatrist. In late 90s, he began a more systematic teaching of rhythmic movement training, which he supplemented by special exercises to integrate infant reflexes. Based on more than 20 years of clinical experience, medical knowledge and a number of scientific studies, researches and theories, Dr. Harald Blomberg continuously incorporates new elements into his method which evolves into the present Blomberg Rhythmic Movement Training®. At present, there are eight Blomberg Rhythmic Movement Training courses of different aspects.

The movements used in the training are active or passive rhythmic whole body movements. Whether done actively or passively these movements, are suitable for every child and adult however disabled he may be. These movements provide a strong stimulation to several senses, including the balance sense, proprioception in many joints and the inner organs of the belly, and the tactile sense organs. The sensory stimulation caused by the rhythmic movements stimulates the nerve connections to develop. This causes attention and concentration to improve, hyperactivity and impulsivity to decrease, and primitive reflexes to mature and integrate, which will facilitate the ability of the child to regulate its level of activity and be still.

When Rhythmic Movement Training is used with children and adults with less severe challenges, it will improve their motor abilities such as coordination, muscle tone and integration of primitive reflexes. Additionally many people have noticed improvement in different areas such as speech, vision and difficulties with attention, hyperactivity, reading and writing. According to the hypothesis of Dr Harald Blomberg, such improvement can be explained by the stimulation and linking up of different parts of the brain caused by the rhythmic exercises.
