Integrative Studies Definition
Integrative studies is the application of knowledge in two separate disciplines to create
new ideas, perspectives and approaches. Integrative Studies is the real life application of
interdisciplinarians. It is the marriage of the way they think with what they have learned from
their interdisciplinary studies. What this means to me is being able to take everything I have
learned from all the classes I have taken and think deeply about the different ways each can be
applied to a problem. This is a beneficial skill to have because it will help provide an innovative
and creative approach to finding solutions. Integrative Studies could be used to find various
perspectives that best reach out to people, finding the vehicle and creating the message itself to
tailor to that particular audience.

Integrative Studies Metaphor
Integrative studies is very similar to a bouquet of flowers. Just like you bring together
roses, lavender and baby’s breath to create a unique fragrance and visual aesthetic, integrative
studies bring together several disciplines to create a unique and creative perspective. Just like
arranging a boquet of flower, you can mix and match several different disciplines that may or
may not compliment each other in order to create a stunning final result. In my own studies I find
that one field can compliment another, such as Media Strategies does Public Relations. Similarly,
certain flowers are paired together because they compliment one another such as baby’s breath
and roses. These flowers, although they do not look anything alike, are often paired together to
create one beautiful bouquet.

Personal Narrative
I grew up in college station, Texas. I was born in North Carolina, but I cannot recall back
any further than living in college station. I grew up, socially awkward and not very bright.
The unfortunate combination of dyslexia and not ever being thrown into play dates. To
combat these challenges, I read as many books as I could get my hands on and behaved in the
ways that I believed would make others like me. By the time I got into High School, I
believed myself to be quite accomplished in both educational and social aspects. I was in
honors and pre-AP classes and had a tight-knit group of friends. My second year of high
school was a whirlwind of change. My family moved to a small town in Oklahoma. My
mother had great ambitions for me and enrolled me in several summer school courses to get
me above sophomore level, to essentially skip a grade. I had to reboot the process of being a
complete success in both education and my social life. I faced this challenge with contempt
and dread. The next year we moved to a small suburb outside of Seattle, WA and my mother
went in remission. I graduated a year early, as scheduled. I took a semester off because of
financial and geographical complications. I enrolled in New Mexico State University in Las
Cruces, NM forty-five minutes away and hated it immediately, and the commute. Growing
up in College Station, I was disappointed in the lack of campus life that I was accustomed to
seeing. I enrolled in University of Texas at El Paso, and was even more mortified by the
campus life and general attitudes of the students, but in state credits would help me better in
transferring to a better college. My father refused to support my decisions to go to Texas
A&M, for who knows what reasons, and insisted I attend a college near family. My sister and
her fiancé were moving to Lubbock, so he suggest I apply to Texas Tech. All of my savings
paid for applications and dorm fees. Moving once again, to Lubbock. Moving, which is a

discontinuity, had in a way become a continuity with which the frequency that it had picked
up in my life.
When I transferred to Texas Tech University, I was a journalism major. I was also
currently living in El Paso. Since I did not receive my acceptance letter until two weeks prior
to the start of classes, I was not able to make arrangements to attend orientation. I signed up
for online classes to complete my basics, since I would have to wait a semester in order to
afford to move to Lubbock, but still had a hold on my account. Through some absurd logic
where only students under the University Studies distance education program were allowed
to take orientation online, advisors changed my major. I had to wait until the next semester to
change it back to Journalism, unfortunately, I was not able to because my GPA dropped.
Since my first interaction with advisors and the absurdities over orientation, I did not go to
see another advisor and mapped out my own degree plan through the degree audits online.
This past semester I went to speak to my advisor, for the first time in two and a half years,
about transferring back into the College of Media & Communication, but ended up staying in
University Studies because that meant I could graduate a year earlier than expected. My areas
of concentration are Public Relations, Media Strategies and Organizational Leadership. What
I hope to gain from Public Relations is an insight into upper management and how to
communicate within an organization and, also, to become a better writer. In Public Relations
you learn how to cater your writing to your audience, a skill that can be carried into anything
I do that relates to writing. In Media Strategies I am learning the different outlets through
which one can reach their intended audience. I am not sure what I will do with my degree; I
had no intention of majoring in University Studies. I hope that by graduating a year earlier
than intended, I can start my graduates program that much sooner. After I receive my
graduates’ degree I will try to get a job doing something that interests me. The best way to
Running head: Portfolio 11
find out what career to go into is to try one out, by way of an internship. During my summers
I will try to find internships with a public relations organization, a publishing company or
writing for an established online magazine..
The common threads in my life are my family, who have always been there for me, and
my boyfriend, who will always be there for me. I know how naïve that last part sounds. My
family may not be there for me financially or support my career path, but they are always
there when I need them. My father was the person who insisted that I go to school at Texas
Tech. My sister was the one who introduced me to the idea that I could write for a living.
Writing, my hobby, could actually be something that I can do daily and make money off of,
an idea that I am still perplexed by. My mother was the one who insisted that I read every
day to enhance my reading skills and vocabulary. She also recommending that I go to
graduate school, she even introduced the idea that I could get my masters from Texas A&M.
I could finally go to the college that I had dreamed of going to since I was a kid! Whatever
their intentions, my family has always been there to help guide me and help me make
important decisions. Another continuity in my life, recently, is my boyfriend. No matter how
many jobs I quit or times I change my major, he is always there to encourage me to do what
is best. He has been there to inspire me to write more and has reassured me that, in our future
together, writing can be my career, if so I choose it to be. Faith has been, by far, the strongest
continuity in my life. I turned to my faith when my mother was sick, when I moved to a new
city, it helped bring me closer to my friends and family and provided me with the strength
and drive to finish my education. It has been my faith, most of all, that has shaped me to be
the person who I am today.
Continuity and discontinuity work in my life with a push and pull motion, like the waves
moving a rock on the beach. Continuity projects me forward, while discontinuity pulls me
Running head: Portfolio 12
back slightly. Some waves are bigger than others, and some waves pick me up clear into the
sea and deposit me into a new beach. From all of the many experiences that I have had, I
connect them through religion, and much introspection. I have gone to three different high
school and three different colleges and lived in four different states. Religion is like a wave,
rushing over me completely. I have floundered and flailed for years, yearning to cling to the
life that I had before the very first move, but through my faith I have realized that everything
happens for a reason. Without discontinuity, the waves will continue to smoothe over a rock
for years until it becomes a small grain of sand. Discontinuity is a much needed change in
life, a fresh perspective. Like listening to everyone around you gossip about who asked who
to homecoming when you’ve just found out your mom has cancer. Discontinuity sheds a new
light on your way of thinking. Skipping a grade can project you forward, to bigger and better
things. Discontinuity is the change in your life that can put you on a new path (or beach).
Continuity is still finding religion in the discontinuity of your mothers life threatening illness.
Its being able to turn to your family when you aren’t sure what graduate school to apply to.
Continuity is finding those aspects of life that you can always turn to when a wave crashes
down on you.

Sample 3: Public RelationsFor an event planning class, the final project assignment was to create a two day event to recruit high school students to the College of Media and Communications. The project was to work as a team to create an idea from scratch; goals, objectives, theme, main message, time frame, itinerary, budget, marketing strategy and issues management. The final product was presented to the media and communications recruiter Emily Balke.

ReflectionThe key concepts from this class were learning what it means to be an interdisciplinarian,
how that term came about, why there is a necessity for it in today’s culture, Integrative studies
and how students can apply integrative knowledge to their fields, career aspirations and knowing
yourself in order to be able to market yourself to an employer. The slides, class lectures and
online lectures were far and away more useful than anything found in the course textbook. The
one concept that befuddled me and was not very well presented was continuity and discontinuity.
This concept was very hard to deduce from the assigned text book reading and seemed too
abstract to grasp without an in person explanation. Hybrid courses, personally, are the worst way
for classes to be taught. I have done exceedingly well in online and in-person classes but never in
hybrid classes. I would not have taken this particular class if I had known that it was hybrid.
There is something about the division of work that is extremely difficult to maintain. Turning
certain papers in online and then certain papers in in-class is confusing and difficult to keep up
with. The content is intriguing and easy to understand. The group work and debates were fun,
useful and offered a nice change of pace from lectures. However, it is difficult to assemble eight
men into meeting and completing assignments when the class only meets once a week. Other
Running head: Portfolio 21
than the struggle that accompanies hybrid clases, the assignments balanced well with the amount
of information provided and were very well spread out across the semester.
My three areas of concentration are Public Relations, Media Strategies, and
Organizational Leadership. INTS will help bridge these three areas of concentration by providing
me with a certain skill set that no other degree could offer. INTS prepares students to use critical
thinking and analysis in order to solve real world problems. This research and integrative
approach gives INTS students the opportunity and insight to create their own connections
between classes. Thinking integratively gives students the ability to draw their own conclusions
on how courses relate to each other because they are robed with this new perspective. Having the
ability to look at a complex problem and distinguish what insights to use to solve it gives
students the advantage of proactive critical thinking that they would not find in any other
discipline. I can now look at my three areas of concentration and see that I will use the various
techniques, strategies and tools learned in Media Strategies and apply that skill set to a position
in Public Relations. I can then figure how classes such as economics can help specifically to
Public Relations with things like environmental scanning for any company I work for.
