iNtUit sHOw 2010 LECTurE SErIESDiscover Outsider and Folk Art: Conversations with Curators, Critics, Collectors, Artists and Art Market Journalists. All lectures take place Friday, November 5 and Saturday, November 6 in room 324 of Navy Pier’s Festival Hall, except where noted. Admission to the Lecture Series is included with purchase of SOFA or Intuit Show ticket.

Michael Bonesteel, author of Henry Darger: Art and Selected Writingsand Adjunct Assistant Professor, Art History at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, will provide an introduction to outsider and self–taught art and explore its connections to Chicago.
vAgAbONDS, DrIfTErS, NOMADS:A Look at the Itinerant American Artist Tradition in PortraitureFriday, November 5, 2 PM – 3 PM
Ammi Phillips (1788–1865), whose Girl in a Red Dress graces Intuit’s Forget Me NOT exhibition, traveled from town to town in the 19th century, peddling his stock trade in portraiture. In this two–part lecture, Elizabeth Whiting, curator at the Union League Club of Chicago, provides an overview of Phillips’ career, tracing the development of his style in relation to the portrait techniques and formats of his day. Scott Sikkema, Executive Director of Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education, will discuss the history and aesthetics of the itinerant artists; examining the relations between the circumstances of a vagabond, peripatetic existence and the art it produces.
bLAbWOrLD bOOk rELEASEFriday, November 5, 5 PM – 7 PM Contributing artists, CJ Pyle, Fred Stonehouse, Michael Noland, Tom Huck, Teresa James, Travis Lampe, Kari Laine McCluskey, Larry Day, and BLABWORLD founder, editor, and designer, Monte Beauchamp will be available to sign copies at the release of the premiere volume of BLABWORLD, a 10 x 10 inch, full-color, 128-page, periodic hardcover book of works by leading contemporary painters, print makers, illustrators, and sequential artists worldwide. HENry DArgEr AND THE uNruLy PAPEr DOLLHOuSE SCrAPbOOkSaturday, November 5, 11 AM – 12 PM
Presented by Mary Trent, Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Wisconsin–Parkside, who specializes in self–taught art and 20th century American art history. She will present several examples of work by Henry Darger that focus on girls at play and suggests that his paintings may have been influenced by the turn of the century American craft of making paper dollhouse scrapbooks.
buT IS IT OuTSIDE?Saturday, November 6, 2 PM – 3 PM
Members of Chicago–area organizations that foster the creativity of developmentally disabled artists share artwork made by artists and debate whether or not the work may be considered “outside.” Panelists include Robert Lentz, Project Onward; Frank Tumino; Little City; Maggie Roche, El Valor; and Ryan Shuquem, The Arts of Life; moderated by art therapist Suellen Semekoski.
