Summary Main entry: Emmanuel Lemuel McCall Papers Date Span: 1946-2009 Abstract: Collection of material related to Emmanuel McCall and his ministry as an African American Baptist minister and denominational leader in Baptist life. McCall served with the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1968 to 1991. He was active in the Baptist World Alliance and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Size: 16 linear ft. (35 boxes) Collection #: AR 905 Biographical Note Pastor, denominational worker, scholar, and author Reverend Emmanuel McCall was born on February 4, 1936, in Sharon, Pennsylvania. As a native of Sharon, McCall matriculated at the public schools of West Shenango in Township, Pennsylvania. After graduating high school, he attended Simmons Bible College, University of Louisville, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Emory University. McCall holds four degrees including a doctorate of ministry from Emory University. He also has honorary degrees from Simmons Bible College and United Theological Seminary in Louisiana. McCall was licensed to preach by the Valley Baptist Church in Wheatland, Pennsylvania and was ordained by that church in 1954. He served as pastor of the 28th Street Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky from 1960-1968. He was on the faculty at Simmons Bible College in Louisville from 1958 to 1968, when in 1968, he accepted the position of Associate Director in the Department of Work with National Baptists, with the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. He was named Director of the Black Church Relations Department in 1975. He retired his position as Director of the Black Church Division at the Board in 1991. McCall was an adjunct faculty member at Southern Baptist Seminary, from 1970 until 1996, where he developed the Black Church Studies program that was later used by three SBC seminaries. He also served as visiting professor at theological seminaries in Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, West Africa, and Emory University. McCall has written five books and has contributed chapters to thirty-three others, and has also written for denominational and theological magazines. McCall has served on the board of trustees for the Interdenominational Theological Center from 1978-2004. He also served on the board of

the Atlanta University Center, the board of governors of the Georgia Association of Pastoral Care, the Ethics Commission of the Baptist World Alliance, and the Arrangements Committee for the International Summit of Baptists Against Racism and Ethnic Conflict. He has received many honors and recognitions, such as the E.Y. Mullins Distinguished Denominational Service Award in 1990, which is the highest recognition given by the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as President of the Southern Baptist Seminary Alumni Association from 1991-1992. In 1999, he was inducted in the Morehouse College "M. L. King Board of Preachers," and he also received the James H. Costen Award from the Interdenominational Theological Center. Dr. McCall has been active in the leadership of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and served as Moderator for the National Cooperative Baptist Fellowship from 2006-2007. McCall is married to Emma Marie McCall. They reside in Atlanta, Georgia and have two children and five grandchildren. Scope and Content Note The collection consists of Emmanuel McCall’s personal papers that document his life and ministry but do not include the official papers from his work with the Home Mission Board. The papers are divided into several series of materials and includes correspondence, subject files, articles, addresses, informational files on race relations, the Black church, Baptist history, the Baptist World Alliance, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Interdenominational Theological Center, the Christian Fellowship Baptist Church, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Alumni Association. The collection also includes numerous sermons and writings by McCall. Transcripts of two oral history interviews with McCall are a part of the papers. The collection includes publications of various types that are associated with McCall. The collection holds many audio and visual resources, mostly related to McCall, that include sermons, addresses, music, and interviews with McCall. The photographs and photograph albums in the collection document McCall’s family life, ministry, Baptist World Alliance activities, and mission trips. The scrapbooks include clippings, programs, letters, and photographs that document his life, activities, and accomplishments.
