PrologueWelcome from the Director
Welcome to the 8th InvernessBookFestival. This year’s line-up sees a wide selection of authors fromaround theHighlands and Islands give the event a real localflavour. There are plenty of authors from the rest of Scotlandtoo – talking about land ownership, capturingHimmler
andHighland cowboys.
Readers’ favourites LouiseWelsh andChristopherBrookmyreare here to tell us about about their latest works, and I’m reallychuffed that we’ve convinced JohnByrne tomake his first everappearance at the Inverness Book Festival with his beautiful newbookDonald and Benoit, which dips into a wonderfully imaginativeworld. It truly is a delight for the eyes. There aremore kids eventsthis year, with the enthusiastic SonsieMusic folk providinglively singing and fun to entertain adults asmuch as kids.
There’s also a chance to get the whole family involved in an eventencouraging older kids reading to younger ones with the
lovely people fromPictureKelpies.
I look forward to seeing you inmidAugust for a few daysof happy immersion in books – what better way to round
off the summer hols!

Fri 12Aug2011, 18.30–19.30
TomRenouf was still a schoolboy in Scotlandwhenthe SecondWorldWar began. Bright and determined,he joined Scotland’smost famous and celebratedfighting unit – the legendary BlackWatch, whichstruck fear into the hearts of the enemy during thetrenchwarfare of 1914 – 18. German soldiers dubbedthe kilted Highlanders ‘devils in skirts’ and rated theregiment the ‘most feared of all’.
As raw recruits he and his teenage comradesfought in the Battle of Normandy – against fanaticalresistance fromone of Himmler’s personal creations, the 12th Hitler Youth SSDivision. The BlackWatchwent on to liberate Holland and fight in the Battle ofthe Bulge, to invade Germany and struggle throughthe dense Reichswald forest in the last great battle oftheWestern Front where 33,000 allied soldiers died. Then, among the first to cross the Rhine, Renouf andhis friends discoveredHimmler’smost shockingcreation – the concentration camps.
BlackWatch tells the story not only of Tom’s regimentbut of all the Highlanderswho landed onD-day toretake St Valéry, liberateHolland, fight in theArdennesand invade Germany. BlackWatch is both the epicstory of the 51st HighlandDivision and a searingpersonal account of oneman’s courage inwar.

This summer sees the release ofChristopher’s fourteenth novel,Where theBodies areBuried. In recent years, Billy has been performingmostly in the USA,but he returned to the UKwith his new band to play to apacked house at Shepherd’s Bush Empire. After the gig hemet upwith Christopher Brookmyrewho (lucky for us!)persuaded him to venture north of the border tomake thisan event to remember.Billy’s career as a song-writer has seen him support U2 andREMaswell as carving a successful career stateside. Sowhat’s the connection between the twomen?Well, The FaithBrothers’ 1985 hitCountry of theBlind provided the title forBrookmyre’s second novel. Billy’s lyrics are also quotedliberally throughout Christopher’s work. So it seems to us,andwe hope you agree that an evening spent in theircompany enjoying conversation about stories that inspiredsongs and performing songs that inspired stories looks tobe the perfect end to another fantastic festival.

Cinema
Sunday14August, Cinema19.15
Every four seconds, someone buys aMills &Boon novel. Guilty Pleasures showsus theworldwide appeal of this extraordinarypublishing sensation through the eyes of it’sunlikely authors, unlucky in love cover starsand those that believe in the power ofromance over everything.
This is awonderful, humour filleddocumentary that never pokes fun at itssubject and never takes itself too seriously.
Weare hopeful that the director, JulieMogganwill join us for a post screeningQ&A.
