Optiwand has the same, simple user interface as theOptidrive and allows on-line or off-line parameterediting and parameter set transfer, to or from anOptidrive or pc. In the press of a button, 1 of 63 parameter sets canbe transferred to an Optidrive. Data transfer iscompleted in less than 1/2 second, though crucially,with 3 levels of error detection, the transfer is alsototally accurate.

Optiwand saves time and money and improvesproduct quality during any system or machineassembly process. However, once installed, theOptiwand also ensures that service levels areguaranteed as plant can be maintained and keptrunning with known parameter settings.

Optiwand can also be used to remotely control anOptidrive duplicating the keypad functions on theOptidrive.

The infra-red communication between the Optiwandand Optidrive functions through transparentmaterials such as glass or perspex allowingOptidrive configuration or monitoring to take placethrough an appropriate window in an enclosure. Inthis way it is not always necessary to open anenclosure door to access an Optidrive.

Optistore communicates using an RS232 electricalinterface with an Optidrive or Optidrive networkallowing real-time parameter configuration, drivecontrols and data logging.

Optiport is an intelligent device with its ownmicrocontroller, which connects to either a singleOptidrive or a network of Optidrives using anoptical or electrical interface.

Optiport behaves as the remote keypad anddisplay for the Optidrive on the network which hasthe same serial address. The physical layout andthe operation of the Optiport keypad and displaymimic the Optidrive exactly.

The temperature of the refrigerated area isregulated by controlling the pressure of therefrigerant.

Sensors feedback pressure information toOptiport/ Optidrives set-up up in PI controlmode. INPUT CHOKES (LINE CHOKES)

Used to protect the front end of the drive againstvoltage spikes which might originate fromlightning strikes or other equipment on the samesupply ie dc drives.

Input chokes are available for Optidrive size 1, 2and 3.

Optidrive size 3 includes a dc link choke within itsdesign which improves its immunity to mainsborne problems, although in some situations a 3phase line choke will also be required for fullprotection.

Optidrive sizes 4, 5 & 6 include 3 phase linechokes as part of the products basic design, thissignificantly improves the robustness of theseproducts and is a key specification benefit.

OUTPUT FILTERS

Optidrive, like the majority of inverter drives on themarket have unfiltered outputs, which in the majorityof applications is satisfactory. However, in a smallnumber of applications output filtering is stronglyrecommended to improve system functionality,reliability and longevity. These applications include:

− Long motor cables− High capacitance motor cables (typical "pyro"

wire, used for fire protection)− Multiple motors connected in parallel− Motors without inverter grade insulation (typically

older motors)

A range of high quality output filters are available forOptidrive, which employ the latest nano-crystalline,iron powder inductor technology with the following keyfeatures:

APPLICATION TIPS

Soft startSoft starting of any application protects themechanical drive system reducing wear and tearon bearings, belts, etc. Soft starting also reducesdirect on line starting currents from 600% to 100 -150% of motor rated current.

Motor-drive selectionThe number one problem experienced byinexperienced drive users is matching the motorand drive voltage; ensure that the motor terminalbox connection (star or delta) corresponds withthe drive voltage.

Low speed motor operationWhen an application requires a motor to run forlong periods of time at low speeds, typically lessthan 1/3 base speed, and particularly whenadditional boost is applied, the motor should beforce cooled.

EMCGood cable management is the key to solvingEMC problems. Always use screened cablebetween the drive and the motor and keep controland power cabling separated by at least 100mm.Where control and power cables must cross,ensure that they do so at 90o.

GeneratorsSoft starting is key in reducing generator costs asa system can be dimensioned for continuousrather than start-up operation (4 - 6 timesreduction). A contactor should be placed betweenthe generator and the drive, which should beactivated by the Optidrive's drive healthy outputrelay. Thus, in the event of a generator over-voltage, the drive will trip causing the contactor toopen removing the potentially harmful over-voltage from the drive.

Freewheeling FansUse dynamic braking on enable to bring free-wheeling fans to rest before starting to control.Starting a drive into a free-wheeling motor createsa direct short-circuit, which damages the driveand the motor.

Variable torque (radial & axial fans)Variable torque mode can be used to drive radialfans and pumps. When selected, an extra framesize of continuous power is available from aparticular drive (size 3 and above). Axial/centrifugal fans or pumps should be driven inconstant torque mode/ 150% overload.

1 phase suppliesOptidrive offers high power single phase input,three phase output operation up to 45kW.

Energy SavingIn general, reducing the speed of a process willsave energy. Using PI/ feedback control, energysaving can be maximised by running a motor at itsoptimum speed for a particular situation.

OptiportIn most controlled systems, a display of thecontrolled parameter is required ie pressure ortemperature. Optiport usefully offers both thefeedback control logic and a remote mountable,scalable display.

Variable feedrateIt is often useful to run a particular process atoptimum power/ load ie a wood-saw. A firstOptidrive can be used to drive the primary processand a second Optidrive can be used to control thefeed of the work piece into the primary process. API controller uses the load output from the primaryOptidrive as the feedback parameter and thenchanges the speed of the feed drive to keep theprimary process at optimum load.

HarmonicsDrives inherently create harmonic distortion,however the effects can be significantly reducedusing input/ line chokes. Size 4, 5 & 6 drives haveintegral line chokes giving rise to a significantadvantage over other products which requireexternal line chokes. 12 pulse systems can beemployed to further reduce harmonic distortion.

Enclosure designDrive system enclosure design requires acompromise between 1, managing the heatcreated by the drive(s) in order to keep theenclosure cool to increase component lifetime and2, the need to seal the enclosure for environmentaland safety reasons. "Through hole" mountingwhere the heatsink is put through a hole in thepanel allows the sensitive control electronics to betotally sealed in the front of the panel, whilst theheat generating components in the rear of thepanel can be kept cool with "dirty" air.

Long CablesIdeally a drive should be placed as close aspossible to the driven motor. Where long cablesare unavoidable, and particularly, when the cableis longer than the specified maximum for thedrive, output filters should be used.

Parallel MotorsWhen parallel motors are connected to a drive theextra capacitance of the parallel motors comparedto a single motor of the same combined power cancause problems. Allow 10 - 15% extra for drivesizing. In addition, the capacitance effect can bereduced if the motor cabling is "daisy chained" ieconnected from the drive to motor 1, then motor 1to motor 2, etc. rather than each motor beingconnected directly to the drive output. In extremecases, the use of output filters is advisable.
