GIS MAPPING INITIATIVE

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Mapping Initiative is working with a network of scientists, students, and volunteers to create an immense database of ecological and sociological information specific to the Azuero. It will be used for education, research, information-sharing, and analysis, and of value to projects in tropical environments worldwide. This map is a tiny example of what it can do.

INICIATIVA DE MAPEO SIGLa iniciativa de mapeo a través de sistemas de información geográfica (SIG) se está llevando a cabo a través de un grupo de científicos, estudiantes y voluntarios con el fin de crear una gran base de datos geográficos enfocada a temas ecológicos y sociales específicos de la Península de Azuero. Esta base de datos podrá ser utilizada para educación, investigación, intercambio de información y análisis, siendo también de gran utilidad para proyectos en otras regiones tropicales. Este mapa es un pequeño ejemplo de lo que el SIG puede hacer.

VISITING RESEARCHERS AND STUDENTS

The Azuero Earth Project supports students, scientists, and educators doing research related to our mission by providing opportunities for field work on the Azuero. The students and their post graduate and PhD. counterparts are able to see their findings applied and tested in local communities and shared with a growing network worldwide.

AZUERO RESOURCE CENTER

The Azuero Resource Center (ARC), at the AEP offices in Pedasí, is the center for environmental information on the Azuero and a conduit to similar projects around the world. It provides free access to information on sustainability: eco/organic agriculture, alternative energy and architecture, waste reduction, reforestation, community activism, species protection, and much more. It hosts free monthly lectures and weekly children’s workshops, provides meeting space for local groups, and welcomes visiting environmentalists to network and take advantage of our wi-fi and office facilities. The ARC exists digitally, as www.azueroearthproject.org where we provide a complete listing of our library contents, scientific papers, information about our programs and study opportunities, local news related to sustainability, a calendar of events, and so much more.

CENTRO DE RECURSOS DE AZUEROEl Centro de Recursos de Azuero, ubicado en las oficinas del Proyecto Ecológico Azuero en Pedasí, es el centro de información ambiental en la región y un conducto a otros proyectos similares alrededor del mundo. El centro provee acceso gratuito a información sobre sostenibilidad: agricultura eco/orgánica, energía alternativa y arquitectura, reducción de desechos, reforestación, activismo comunitario, protección de especies y mucho más. El centro organiza charlas gratuitas mensuales y talleres infantiles semanales, provee espacio donde grupos locales pueden reunirse y donde investigadores visitantes pueden hacer contactos y aprovechar nuestro wi-fi and demás facilidades. El Centro de Recursos también se encuentra en el web: www.proecoazuero.org. En el sitio web se da una lista completa del material de nuestra biblioteca, artículos científicos, información sobre nuestros programas, oportunidades de estudio, noticias locales relacionadas a sostenibilidad y calendario de eventos.

The Azuero environment is a classic example of tropical environmental evolution: an incredible level of biological diversity challenged by a tradition of slash and burn agriculture and the potential of uncontrolled development. However, located in a country of high political and economic stability, excellent infrastructure and an amazing concentration of scientific activity, the Azuero provides an unusually safe and friendly place to study.

El Proyecto Ecológico Azuero agrupa la participación de instituciones científicas y educativas locales e internacionales, investigadores visitantes, estudiantes, voluntarios y comunidades de la región para investigar y evaluar soluciones que hagan frente a los mayores desafíos ambientales y poblacionales del mundo en desarrollo: desechos, agua, seguridad alimentaria, pérdida de hábitat, vivienda y energía.

¿Por Qué Aquí?

Azuero es un lugar perfecto para la investigación en ecología. Contiene algunos de los últimos parches en

Panamá del ecosistema forestal más amenazado del mundo: el bosque seco tropical.

El bosque seco tropical es un ecosistema con una estación seca prolongada (de 3 a 5 meses) y con un gran porcentaje de árboles que durante la estación seca pierden sus hojas. Es el sistema forestal más amenazado del mundo y uno de los ecosistemas en mayor peligro. Originalmente cubría una gran parte de los trópicos, pero debido a que sus condiciones son muy aptas para el desarrollo humano, actualmente cubre menos del 2%, siendo reemplazado por agricultura y otros usos. A pesar de jugar un papel primordial en la vida de los trópicos, históricamente ha sido ignorado en estudios científicos aunque esto últimamente está cambiando. REDUCE – REUSE – RECYCLE

Local farmers have identified water and garbage as the two most critical challenges facing the Azuero. This could surely be said of the entire world. The AEP is looking to find long term solutions through research and experimentation as well as promoting immediate results with Pedasi Recycles! — a joint initiative with local youth volunteers which has created and operates a recycling program for the Pedasí area.

REDUCIR – REUSAR – RECICLARLos productores locales han identificado la basura y la disponibilidad de agua como los dos mayores retos en Azuero, retos también comunes en gran parte del mundo. El Proyecto Ecológico Azuero está buscando soluciones a largo plazo a través de investigación y experimentación así como también resultados inmediatos a través del proyecto ¡Recicla Pedasí!. Este un esfuerzo conjunto realizado con jóvenes voluntarios locales que manejan un programa de reciclaje en el área de Pedasí.

Our Mission

“The mission of the Azuero Earth Project is to preserve the earth’s ecosystems, protect biodiversity, and promote healthy communities by helping people to make informed decisions, take sustainable actions, and share knowledge.”

What We Do

The Azuero Earth Project enlists the collaboration of educational and scientific institutions, scientists, students, volunteers and local communities. Together we explore solutions to major challenges to the environment and populations of the developing world: Waste, Water, Food Security, Habitat Loss, Housing, and Energy.

Our progress, our results, our successes and failures are shared with the world via our website, social media, and program participants.

Why Here?

The Azuero is a perfect site for applied ecological research. It contains some of the last patches in Panama of the world’s most threatened forest ecosystem: Tropical Dry Forest.

Tropical Dry Forest is defined by a prolonged dry season (3–5 months) and a large percentage of deciduous trees. It is the world’s most endangered forest system and one of the most endangered ecosystems, period. Because it is the tropical ecosystem best suited for human habitation it has been largely replaced by agriculture and architecture. It once covered more of the tropics than rainforest but now only 2% remains intact. Even though it plays such a pivotal role in life in the tropics, it has historically been ignored by scientific study. Lately this is changing. The Azuero Peninsula contains some of the last and largest fragments of Tropical Dry Forest in Panama. The Azuero Earth Project is working to save these patches and explore strategies for living in the Tropical Dry Forest environment with minimal impact.

SPIDER MONKEY RESEARCH AND EDUCATION PROGRAM

The Landowners Advice Program is an experimental environmental research and consulting service that explores and provides alternative, healthy, cost effective, and sustainable options for all types of landowners (ranchers/developers/homeowners). It guides their choices and assists in implementation. The development of community and schoolyard gardens as testing places for suitable crops and organic methods is a basic building block of the program.

El Programa de Asesoramiento para Propietarios de Tierras es un servicio experimental de investigación ambiental y asesoría que explora opciones alternativas, saludables, de bajo costo y sustentables para todo tipo de propietario de tierras (desde finqueros grandes y desarrolladores hasta pequeños núcleos familiares). El programa guía en la selección de la mejor alternativa y asiste en su implementación. El desarrollo de huertas comunales y escolares como lugares de prueba de cultivos aptos y métodos orgánicos son herramientas fundamentales de este programa.

ORGANICULTURE AND LANDOWNERS ADVICE PROGRAM

PROGRAMA DE ORGANICULTURA Y ASESORAMIENTO PARA PROPIETARIOS DE TIERRAS

We chose the critically endangered Azuero Spider Monkey (Ateles geoffroyi azuerensis) to be our mascot (named Geoffrey, of course!) because his fragile future is so directly related to the health of the environment. With the collaboration of a group of scientists, students, and local guides we are studying the resident Spider Monkey populations and using this information to guide reforestation decisions. Our staff, working with various partners, high school students, and local volunteers, has created an in-school environmental awareness program centered on the protection of spider monkeys and their dry forest habitat.

Escogimos como nuestra mascota (llamada Geoffrey) al Mono Araña de Azuero (Ateles geoffroyi azuerensis), especie en peligro crítico de extinción, debido a que su futuro está directamente relacionado con el estado del ambiente. Con la colaboración de científicos, estudiantes y guías locales estamos estudiado las poblaciones residentes de monos araña y usando esta información para guiar decisiones de reforestación. Nuestro personal, trabajando con diversas asociaciones, estudiantes de colegios y voluntarios locales, han creado un programa escolar de sensibilidad ambiental centrado en la protección del mono araña y su hábitat en el bosque seco tropical.

GUEST EXPERTS PROGRAM

The Azuero Earth Project organizes visits to the Azuero by experts in various environmentally related fields. We create projects and seminars that explore, refine, and demonstrate sustainable techniques of interest to the community. The resulting information is available in the Azuero Resource Center library and online.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The Azuero Earth Project is committed to the importance of collaboration with local landowners, developers, government agencies, and NGO’s to promote a full understanding of issues and possible solutions. We connect interested students and volunteers with local efforts in need of expertise and assistance. We believe that providing reliable technical companionship can help local programs achieve lasting success. We track their achievements and lessons-learned in order to improve our ability to share solutions that work.
