Investigating TrigonometryThe Investigating Trigonometry workbook is aimed at introducing students to the three trigonometric ratios, sin, cos and tan. Each of the three sheets allows you to change two of the values, theta, opp, adj and hyp. To do this, click on the spinner next to the value. Each of the values, angle, opp, adj and hyp can be shown or hidden independently. To do this, just click on the cell to toggle between show and hide.
Use the table to enter calculations. E.g. type 'sin' into cell E3, then type '=C7/C9' into cell F3 this will calculate sin of the angle for you.
This is a list of possible uses in the classroom. The resource has been designed to be flexible and interactive. It is mainly for use on interactive whiteboards, though not exclusively. This list is by no means exhaustive, it is just a few ideas.Using the angle and hyp worksheet, ask students to divide the opp by the hyp and write the answer on the whiteboard. Change the hyp value and repeat. Continue this until the students realise that this ratio does not change if the angle remains the same. Now change the angle and repeat the process. Introduce this ratio as sine and tell the students that each angle has it's own sine. Now show the students another angle and get them to work out the sine of the angle. Then hide the opp value and change the hyp value ask students to find the opp value and write it on their boards. This activity can be done with all the ratios.
In a computer lab, give students some trigonometry problems to solve. Tell them that they can use the workbook to help them solve these problems. This is best done before the trig ratios have been introduced.
Ask students to open the worksheet and in the first column of the calculations box type in 'opp, hyp', 'adj/hyp' and 'opp/adj', then enter the formulae for these calculations in the second column. Ask students to investigate the relationship between these values. Tell them that they will have to report on their findings.
