Investing In Your Intuition – GMCCI’s Annual Dinner & Recognition Night

The Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry will host its Annual Dinner on Tuesday, March 26 at The Rendezvous. The evening is set to be a theatrical night of inspiration and electrifying entertainment, in addition to a full night of networking and mouth-watering food.

Formal invitations for the night will be sent out in mid-February.

All GMCCI members are encouraged to attend this highly sought out event. Sponsorship opportunities will be available and will range from Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze, as well as a Signature Cocktail Sponsor, Dessert Sponsor and Raffle Donation Sponsor.

The evening will start its festivities at 5:15 p.m. with a pre-dinner cocktail reception giving GMCCI members business-to-business relationship building opportunities prior to dinner. A cash bar will also be available during this time.

The sit down dinner, awards presentation and entertainment will follow from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Nominations are being sought for Volunteer of the Year. We encourage these nominated individuals to show a strong past history of volunteer work in the community, with outstanding contributions to one or more organizations during the past year.

Up to 15 large raffle donations will be drawn for during the event. All raffles prizes will have been items donated to GMCCI for the purpose of this drawing. Raffle tickets will be available during the cocktail hour prior to dinner. Winners need not be present at the dinner to win.

Stetson will combine the art of mystery with the science of psychology and the power of intuition to create the impression that nothing is impossible. Thoughts are reveled, minds are read, reality bends and your imagination is challenged. The “Stetson Experience” is business theatre and motivational entertainment at its best!

A Successful Day on the Hill for MuscatineOn Wednesday, January 23, GMCCI and many Muscatine business leaders traveled to the State Capitol in Des Moines for its 2nd Annual Muscatine Day on the Hill.

It was a day full of handshakes, introductions, meetings and bragging rights for the delegation that traveled west from Muscatine.

The day began with Mayor DeWayne Hopkins and President & CEO, Bill Phelan, GMCCI, being gaveled in and introduced by Legislature Mark Lofgren (R).

Attendees had the chance to attend committee meetings both before and after lunch, while touring the Capitol and its glory.

“Muscatine’s Day on the Hill is an excellent example of our Member’s seeing an opportunity to make a difference and stepping up to make that happen. Spending the day at the Capitol, engaged with our Legislators and highlighting for them what matters most to Muscatine, positions us well for the reminder of the

Legislative session that is just getting underway,” says Greg Jenkins, Vice President, Economic Development, GMCCI.

GMCCI treated all Legislators and their clerks to a catered lunch, while also giving them the chance to listen and speak with local Muscatine leaders. This gave many new Legislators a chance to be introduced to a community that they many not have otherwise known about.

As a token of the day, Legislators and their clerks received a pearl button coaster as a memento of Muscatine’s Day on the Hill.

“We asked McKee Button Company to provide a memento to take to the Capitol. This simple gift representing the history

of Muscatine was well done, on very short notice, and was well received. I think it will be on the desk of Legislators at our State’s Capitol for a long time to come.” said Jenkins.

GMCCI hopes to continue the tradition of Muscatine’s Day on the Hill for 2014 and many years to come.

Professional Safety Solutions Celebrates with Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

GMCCI members, Mayor DeWayne Hopkins and other business leaders joined Professional Safety Solutions and owner Brad Puck in a Ribbon Cutting ceremony on Thursday, January 31, held at their office located at 1608 Grandview Avenue.

Having been in business since April 2012, Professional Safety Solutions offers training in OSHA, Aerial Life & Forklift Certification, Recordkeeping, Excavation, Blood borne Pathogens, First Aid/CPR/AED, Hazcom Confined Space, as well as products such as safety analysis’, manuals and contracts.

Please help us in welcoming Professional Safety Solutions to the Muscatine community!

Members of the Muscatine delegation pose with Reps. Mark Lofgren, R-Musca-tine, (front center) and Tom Sands, R-Wapello (front right), as their day at the Capitol comes to an end.

Owner Brad Puck, Professional Safety Solutions, cuts the ribbon celebrating 9 months of busi-ness here in Muscatine.

Electronic SCORE Sessions Now AvailableOccasionally, the volunteers at SCORE receive email communications from the folks at the National SCORE office in Washington, D.C. Recently it was learned that SCORE now has the ability to counsel electronically in addition to the face to face counseling sessions that we have here in Muscatine.

SCORE volunteers in Muscatine are available every Thursday afternoon for one-hour sessions. The ¬-electronic version (via email) of the SCORE counseling session does have its advantages and disadvantages. It would certainly help someone from far away, but would be missing the face-to-face communication, the firm handshake, body language and

that friendly smile.

Perhaps one day, SCORE counselors will be available via Skype. About a year ago, I completed my Ph.D. in Education. My dissertation committee members lived in: Olympia, Washington, Miami, Florida, and Muscatine, Iowa. The dissertation defense was completed all via Skype. I loved seeing the faces of the committee as they shared the result – a successful defense.

The friendly smiles, the genuine conversation, the shared experiences, answering questions, SCORE counseling sessions are available for the asking. SCORE volunteers are willingly to share their time and expertise to help those entrepreneurs in need.

The SCORE’s website (www.SCORE.org) also has a link available if you enter the ‘52761’ zip code into the ‘Get Free Local Mentoring’ section. This link will take you right to GMCCI’s location.

Robbin Block has been evangelizing the benefits of marketing strategy for over 25 years. Part geek, part creative, she’s brought her in-depth knowledge of the Web and its strategic application to business to companies of all sizes and to thousands of readers via her book, Social Persuasion: Making Sense of Social Media for Small Business. This month, Robbin discusses some of social media’s many implications on the crafting and execution of winning small business marketing plans.

What’s the biggest misperception about social media’s role in marketing, and what should entrepreneurs really be doing as they map out a new small business?

Social media can’t solve all your marketing problems. For a business, it needs to be thought of like any other communication tool. You need to understand the fundamentals of marketing — who’s your target audience, where do they get their information, what do they care about, etc.— to find the right media mix that makes sense for you.

What is the most underutilized non-social media marketing method today?

By far, it’s public relations. Many people are afraid of it, or don’t know what it is. Instead they’ll spend money on poorly placed ads that will almost always fail.

What are two or three go-to resources for finding data about your market?

The U.S. Census. A lot of valuable information from the latest census is now being released. Industry associations. Industry trade publications and consumer magazines. Their media kits have great

information about their readers’ demographics and interests.

And many more resources are available at my website, www.blockbeta.com.

Coupons are gaining popularity as a means for luring potential customers. If this option appears right for a small business, what is needed to help turn coupon users into regular customers?

Understand what attracted them in the first place. People who just want a deal are tough to convert. But many customers use coupons to “sample the goods.” To get them to come back and pay full price, use strategic messaging at each touchpoint to help push them down the purchase path. This messaging can be done verbally, through printed materials, online, and even reinforced with “gifts”.

Can you provide an example of how this works?

A Pilates studio I work with has used social coupons to bring in new customers, offering a 7-week program at a discounted rate. Each week, the studio reinforces the benefits of membership and the results the customer would get if they continue taking their classes. Communications include a comprehensive orientation, an introductory gift of a branded water bottle, follow-on emails, etc. It’s a planned program designed to positively reinforce the customer experience. This in combination with excellent service may be enough to convince the customer to continue at full price.

Expert Tips: Beyond Social Media

with Robbin Block: Owner, Blockbeta Marketing

Robbin Block Seattle, WA www.blockbeta.com [email protected]

Why should entrepreneurs work with a SCORE small business mentor to develop and monitor their marketing plans?

Marketing needs to be flexible, because the environment within which a business operates is always changing. And the business itself is evolving as new opportunities or threats come to light. A SCORE mentor can help filter the information and focus the entrepreneur on what’s important.

Miss Muscatine Scholarship Program Producing Big Results On and Off the Stage

Founded in 1965, the Miss Muscatine Scholarship Program is an official local preliminary of the Miss America Organization. While there have been several Miss Muscatine’s that have gone on to win Miss Iowa, they are especially proud of Miss Muscatine 2011, Jessica Pray, and Miss Muscatine 2012, Mariah Cary, who went on to place in the top ten & top five, respectively, at the Miss America competition.

Mariah will pass along the title of Miss Iowa on June 8, 2013. Their mission of the Miss Muscatine Scholarship Program is to provide opportunities to further the education of Iowa’s young women and give back through community service.

Women’s Connection Honors Emerging Women Leaders

On January 23, 350 women leaders gathered for the Women’s Connection “Women in Leadership” event featuring U.S. District Judge Sara Darrow, on the topic “Find Your Voice: Perspectives on Passion in Life and Leadership.” During the event 15 outstanding regional women were honored as Emerging Women Leaders for their exceptional leadership initiative and high academic achievement, and for making a difference in their school and community.
