Five selections ara made for each of the first two races to preserve the criss-cross, in case of scratches. Yesterday we had one win- ner — Star Gun ($6.90, best bet). Harry lost $28 of his $52 in- vestment. Ruby lost $18 on the criss-cross. "Say hello to Ruby for me." a friend said to Honest Harry yesterday as the downhearted —and broke—HH headed for the parking lot. "I can't," Harry said. "Why? Is Ruby out of town?" the friend asked. SPEAR Q. "I paid 23 for Stude- baker-Packard. What should I do, get out and take my loss or hope for the best?" A.L. A. This question, of course, became progressively harder to answer as the ttock drifts lower. I had very little hesita- tion about advising sale here March 8, w h e n the shares were around 15, and again on May 14 with the price down to 11. At recent levels well below these figures, my feeling—after c o n s i d erable study—remains the same. Studebaker is in the weak- est competitive position of the five companies making com- pact cars. Its sales and earn- ings were down very sharply in the first six months of this year and I see little hope of any real improvement in the futurg. With both Ford and General Motors readying new lines of compact cars, the race is going to become even hot- ter, and I don't thjnk Stude- baker can stand up to it. The company's best hope seems to be a merger which would utilize its large tax loss credit. Something along this line is possible, but the low price of the shares puts Studebaker in a poor bargain- ing position. Q. "Could you recommend a few rood pharmaceutical stocks suitable for a women's investment club?" R. H. A. Gladly, and I think your group shows excellent judg- ment. There should be con- tinued strong growth in phar- maceuticals, which are essen- tially research stocks. I sug- gest Upjohn, which makes steroids, such vitamins as Uni- cap and also Orinase. the first effective oral treatment for diabetes. It would certainly include Bristol-Myers, which produces both ethical and proprietary drugs and has had a powerful growth record. Among smaller situations, I likt Norwich Pharmacal, which has devel- oped an important group of drugs called nitrofurans and sells s u c h over-t n e-counter products as Pepto-Blsmol and Unguentine. Finally, I think you should consider A m e r i c a n Home Products, which is mainly in pharmaceuticals but has done awfully well with househould specialties and some other non-drug lines. Ruby's Bankroll, also started at zero, is based on SIB daily doucle criss-cross (each of our first three horses in first race coupled with each of our first three horses in second race).

Five selections ara made for each of the first two races to preserve the criss-cross, in case of scratches.

Yesterday we had one winner — Star Gun ($6.90, best bet).

Harry lost $28 of his $52 investment. Ruby lost $18 on the criss-cross.

"Say hello to Ruby for me." a friend said to Honest Harry yesterday as the downhearted —and broke—HH headed for the parking lot.

"I can't," Harry said. "Why? Is Ruby out of

town?" the friend asked. "No," Harry said. "We're

not speaking."

Wettlaufers Triumph In Father-Son

By RICK MARCOTTE Sam Wettlaufer and his son,

Ward, yesterday won the Buffalo District Golf Assn. Father-and-Son championship over their home Country Club of Buffalo course.

The Wettlaufers carded a 1-over par 36-37—73 to edge Harry Oates and Harry Oates III. Transit Valley, by one stroke.

The senior Oates played in the tourney despite a 15-foot fall earlier in the day, in which he suffered a pair of sprained thumbs and arm and leg: lacerations.

Don and Ted Sawyer, Transit Valley, finished third with 75. Joe Purcell and Joe Purcell Jr., the defending champions from South Shore, split fourth place at 76 with Ross and Marc Yahn, Transit Valley.

John and Peter Lepir, South Shore, won gross honors in the sons 10-to-14 years of age with 42-42—84. Best net score in this division was by Richard La-gatella and Richard Jr., Transit Valley. They had 96-24—72.

Sawyers Lead Division Gross honors in the sons 15 to

17 years of age went to the Sawyers. Robert Honegger and Robert Jr . took net laurels with 77-8—69.

Norton Forgie and his son, James, took the net for the sons 18 years and over with 84-14— 70.

The Carl H. Nagel Trophy was presented by Nagel to the Wettlaufers.

Studebaker Improvement Is Unlikely

By ROGER E. SPEAR Q. "I paid 23 for Stude-

baker-Packard. What should I do, get out and take my loss or hope for the best?" A.L.

A. This question, of course, became progressively harder to answer as the ttock drifts lower. I had very little hesitation about advising sale here March 8, w h e n the shares were around 15, and again on May 14 with the price down to 11. At recent levels well below these figures, my feeling—after c o n s i d erable study—remains the same.

Studebaker is in the weakest competitive position of the five companies making compact cars. Its sales and earnings were down very sharply in the first six months of this year and I see little hope of any real improvement in the futurg. With both Ford and General Motors readying new lines of compact cars, the race is going to become even hotter, and I don't thjnk Studebaker can stand up to it.

The company's best hope seems to be a merger which would utilize its large tax loss credit. Something along this line is possible, but the low price of the shares puts Studebaker in a poor bargaining position.

Q. "Could you recommend a few rood pharmaceutical stocks suitable for a women's investment club?" R. H.

A. Gladly, and I think your group shows excellent judgment. There should be continued strong growth in pharmaceuticals, which are essentially research stocks. I suggest Upjohn, which makes steroids, such vitamins as Uni-cap and also Orinase. the first effective oral treatment for diabetes.

It would certainly include Bristol-Myers, which produces both ethical and proprietary drugs and has had a powerful growth record. Among smaller situations, I l i k t Norwich Pharmacal, which has developed an important group of drugs called nitrofurans and sells s u c h over-t n e-counter products as Pepto-Blsmol and Unguentine.

Finally, I think you should consider A m e r i c a n Home Products, which is mainly in pharmaceuticals but has done awfully well with househould specialties and some other non-drug lines.
