Discuss:These are two examples of tracking systems created by two different teachers about literary elements. On the left, as the TCs students mastered each element they earned a piece to complete their sundae. Each student had a copy of their sundae and added as they mastered each element. At the end of the unit, with the Mentor Teacher and Administrators permission, they had an ice cream party with the toppings students earned. On the right, you will see how a teacher tracked students understanding of literary elements based on their reading the book Bridge to Terabithia. As students mastered different elements, they added a piece to their bridge. 9Power of Investment
Discuss:The left displays a homework chart. This TC was having a difficult time getting students to turn in their homework. Along with her Mentor Teacher, they came up with an idea to create a visual tracking system to invest students in turning in their homework. Each time they brought their homework, students were able to color the chart. Students were motivated by the chance to color their squares. Investment does not have to cost lost of money! The right hand side shows a class progress towards mastering sight words. The teacher documented how many words the class mastered. As they mastered those words, they were added to the word wall for students to constantly reference. 10Power of Investment

16Closing and Next Steps"I've come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It's my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child's life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or de-humanized."Dr. Hiam Ginott
