We’re excited to release the second issue of Invigorate, Manningham’s new seasonal health and lifestyle magazine. In this autumn issue we look at the range of events happening in Manningham as part of Cultural Diversity Week from Saturday 12 to Sunday 20 March.

Take the time to read about the opportunities for women and girls in sport, the range of ways children and families can get involved and play in nature, and the wonderful volunteers we have in Manningham.

This issue also includes a bumper What’s On, and showcases a wide range of activities, programs, services and events on offer this autumn in Manningham. See pages 5 to 8 for details.

We have received some great feedback on Invigorate and encourage community groups to continue submitting their stories, community profiles and events for upcoming issues. The winter issue of Invigorate will be out in mid June.

AUTUMN 2016

With the recent growth in women’s sporting clubs, including football and cricket in Manningham, there is now a wide range of opportunities for women and girls to get active and involved in sport and recreation locally.

A state government inquiry into Women and Girls in Sport and Active Recreation provided recommendations to the Victorian Minister for Sport in December 2015 on how the sport and active recreation sector can encourage participation among women and girls.

Some of these include female ambassador programs, more women in leadership positions, female friendly built environments and equitable facility usage policies.

For more information, visit www.sport.vic.gov.au/news-and-events

Council is working to improve gender equity and deliver on the recommendations released. For more information, call our Social and Community Services Unit on 9840 9330.

Junior Girls Bulleen Templestowe Cricket Club The 2015/16 season has seen a huge increase in the number of girls playing cricket at the Bulleen Templestowe Cricket Club. The club currently has three girls’ teams, named after Australian players Healy, Perry and Ferling.

The 2016/17 season starts in October this year. For more information, call Mark Cassidy on 0418 893 291 or email [email protected]

Females in Football Female football has taken off in the Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL) since the introduction of a girl’s competition in 2011. The female competition has expanded significantly across all age groups and this year is set to have at least 42 teams, including a new under 10 competition.

This year Manningham will host female teams at Bulleen/Templestowe, Park Orchards, Templestowe, Beverley Hills and Warrandyte football clubs.

For more information, visit www.yarrajfl.org.au

By participating in MMG meetings, men have reported that they experience more authentic connections with themselves and other men, are listened to and genuinely heard. The meetings encourage men to feel safe, share their feelings, speak honestly, openly and confidentially without judgement, and develop authentic friendships that are not based on your job, the car you drive or the football team you follow.

Bruce Ford – Walk LeaderBruce Ford (pictured above, far left) has been a walk leader in Manningham for more than 20 years and is currently leading a Heart Foundation Walking Group on the second and fourth Monday of each month. The walk is free to attend and starts at 9.30 am. Each walk is approximately one hour at a moderate pace.

Bruce had been leading a Manningham U3A walking group for about ten years when, in 2010, the then President of U3A asked if he would be interested in leading a Heart Foundation walk with Manningham Council. For the past five years Bruce has been leading a small group of walkers in his local area, mainly around the Mullum Mullum Creek Linear Trail in Doncaster East.

Bruce said the group is small and friendly and anyone is welcome to come along.

“My favourite thing is seeing the walkers enjoying themselves and at the same time hopefully becoming healthier and fitter,” Bruce said.

For more information or to join the walking group, call 9842 3528 or visit www.manningham.vic.gov.au/walking-groups

Community Hub @ Ajani A range of services, facilities and programs are available at Community Hub @ Ajani at Ted Ajani Reserve in Templestowe Lower. Community organisations partnering with the Hub include the local neighbourhood house, Living and Learning @ Ajani (formerly BATCH), Onemda, Doncare, Eastern Community Legal Centre, Manningham Council, Manningham Community Health Service and Whitehorse Manningham Libraries.

On Thursdays the Living and Learning @ Ajani transforms into a community cafè, where students with an intellectual disability showcase their hospitality skills developed through employment training with Onemda. Visitors can also enjoy the ‘Story Café’ run by the Whitehorse Manningham Libraries where stories and poems are read aloud by a library staff member in a relaxed group setting.

Each Thursday afternoon, staff from Doncare are available at the Hub for residents looking for confidential support.
