PALLIATIVE CARE NSW 2018 BIENNIAL STATE CONFERENCE • 8–10 NOVEMBER, KIAMA INVITATION TO SPONSOR & EXHIBIT 1

On behalf of the Organising Committee I invite your participation in the 2018 State Palliative Care Conference: Riding the Waves of Change.

This unique sponsorship and exhibition opportunity will enable your organisation to not only access a targeted audience of experienced and influential healthcare practitioners but also demonstrate your support and commitment to the field of Palliative Care in New South Wales.

Within the health care system Palliative Care continues to grow and develop rapidly. The 2016 State Conference in Broken Hill was a great success with feedback saying it was the ‘best conference ever – full stop’.

Speakers and delegates from around NSW and South-East Queensland will be representative of the multidisciplinary approach in caring for people with palliative care and end of life needs and their families and loved ones. These health care providers include: Nursing, medicine, allied health, pharmacy, psychology, social work, primary health care workers, volunteers, family service environments and others. They will be drawn from hospital, community and aged care settings.

Over recent years we have seen the resurgence of ‘normalising death’ and making death ‘everybody’s business’, with the uptake of Advance Care Directives, Last Days of Life tools, a myriad of literature, and communities initiating home hospices as well as death and dying awareness.

As we enter the next wave of contemporary issues, are we prepared to ride these waves or flounder in the turbulence?

I look forward to discussing your sponsorship opportunities for this popular and inspirational conference.

Linda HansenChair, Conference Organising Committee

RIDING THE WAVES OF CHANGE

CONFERENCE THEME

We need to be asking the hard questions:

• How well does palliative care deal with the mental health pathology of dying and caring for the dying? Does palliative care help to relieve existential suffering? Is it really an alternative to suicide or assisted dying for people who no longer want to live?

• Whose responsibility is it to have the critical conversations with patients and carers about when to cease active treatment and choosing appropriate options for care?

• When and how do medicinal cannabis have a role in palliative care?

• What role does public palliative care services have to provide care in privately funded residential aged care? Is it sustainable?

• What is needed to provide appropriate support to our multi-faith communities for people to ‘die well’?

• How do we utilise technology to reach patients and carers with life limiting illnesses? Is Skype an alternative to face-to-face care?

The organising committee’s choice of this theme offers delegates the chance to really challenge themselves and their practice in looking at all of the changes that have occurred and are happening around us right now in palliative care and in end of life care more broadly.

Since the days of Cecily Saunders, palliative care has ridden many waves of change.

Just being recognised as a legitimate field of medicine was the start. The next crest was developing specialist services and designated hospital beds. Then building a reputation based on research and data.

Over recent years we have seen the resurgence of ‘normalising death’ and making death ‘everybody’s business’, with the uptake of Advance Care Directives, Last Days of Life tools, a myriad of literature, and communities initiating home hospices as well as death and dying awareness.

We are now entering the next wave of contemporary issues. Are we prepared to ride these waves or flounder in the turbulence?

PALLIATIVE CARE NSW 2018 BIENNIAL STATE CONFERENCE • 8–10 NOVEMBER, KIAMA INVITATION TO SPONSOR & EXHIBIT 5

We have secured some first-class speakers featuring internationally renowned palliative care academic Dr Robert Twycross.

Dr Robert Twycross, an advocate for social justice and palliative care, was a pioneer of the hospice movement during the 1970s, when he helped palliative care gain recognition as an accepted field of modern medicine.

He has seen and been part of much change in the palliative care world internationally and is an advocate for equity of access to palliative care as a human right.

We anticipate he will bring wisdom and guidance at this time of change, especially around the voluntary assisted dying debate.

Dr Twycross’s published texts are the ‘go to’ texts for clinicians, internationally.

He has taught in nearly 50 countries, and has written some 300 articles, chapters and editorials, and is the author/editor of several widely acclaimed textbooks, including the Palliative Care Formulary 5th edition, the ‘bible’ of medication management in palliative care. He has received numerous lifetime achievement and other awards from professional organisations.

We are also proud to announce that our keynote speaker will be Dr Michael Barbato, who will reflect on the many waves of change he has ridden in his long career.

After 25 years in palliative care Michael retired in 2014. He directed palliative care services in Sydney and ACT, and worked for several years in Central Australia and Darwin.

His research and areas of interest include the experience of dying and unusual events around the time of death.

He has lived in Kiama for 13 years and with his wife Ann, and now runs courses on death and dying for professional and community groups.
