Dear Friends,Celebrating the rites of Confirmation and Reception at today’s 9:10 a.m. service, and preaching and presiding at our 11:15 a.m. service, our Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Andrew M. L. Dietsche, comes to St. James’ as a living symbol of the ministry we share with more than 200 other congregations in the Diocese of New York, and a reminder that they are but our nearest neighbors in the communion of saints in all times and places.

If the commitments made in confirmation and reception were commitments to St. James’ only, we wouldn’t need the Bishop here to solemnize them. The commitment made by those confirmed and received here today is a commitment to the responsibilities of baptism extending far beyond the walls and programs of St. James’. Those are the commitments to share in the worship and life of the Church, to proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ, and to strive for justice and peace among all people.

Events in Boston in recent days remind us that the day-to-day world we inhabit, though blessed by God with beauty and goodness, includes danger, violence, and enmity. Events at St. James’ today remind us that even in the midst of uncertainty and sorrow, we the Church have witnessed the victory of love over death, and we have the privilege and responsibility of proclaiming that Good News in this and every time and place.

In Christ,

O God, whose Son

Jesus is the good

shepherd of your

people: Grant that

when we hear his

voice we may know

him who calls us each

by name, and follow

where he leads …

Toiletries Ministry - Donate and help sort travel-sized toiletriesSeveral times each year, St. James’ gives toiletry kits to our meal pro-gram and shelter guests. The kits are a welcome extra for these guests and their preparation also gives many parishioners the opportunity to serve by collecting and sorting the products that make up the kits. We need year-round donations of travel-sized products such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion, shower gel, toothpaste and tooth brushes. Parishioners are encouraged to collect these products when they travel and to leave their donations at the reception desk in the parish house. Kits are sorted regularly throughout the year. PRAY » WORK » GIVE STEWARDSHIP 2013

Your church is the community where you seek and serve God

in Christ, and where you allow yourself to be served in Christ’s

name. It is the center of your praying, working, and giving for the

spread of the Kingdom of God. When you commit a portion of your

annual budget to the ministries of St. James’, we know — and you

know — that this is your church. Your commitment won’t simply

represent your share of St. James’ budget; with God’s help, it will

increasingly represent the Kingdom’s share of your budget. If you

have yet to make a commitment for 2013, please do so by filling

out a pledge card or visiting stjames.org/commitment.
