We all know that men are becoming a little bit more self-conscious about their get-ups and a tad fussy about their general appearance. Following our I-AM Sessions super-talk from Esquire’s Senior Style Editor, Teo Van Den Broeke, we have our top tips for men this season. Read and learn…

Dressing to compliment your shape

The days of men buying clothes based on their favourite colour and comfort are gone. Try on clothes that fit and compliment your body shape. For example, tailored silhouettes for taller, slim men and avoiding any fitted T-shirts and skinny jeans at all costs for the shorter and more portly. Talk to store staff for advice and remember to try clothes on and not rush a purchase!

Layering

This has been a hit for a while now for those in the know, but it’s a great way to look effortlessly cool and to make more formal attire less ‘in your face’. Partner T-shirts with open shirts; add a cashmere knit over a shirt (tie optional) with a jacket or combine a hoodie underneath a leather biker jacket.

Soft tailoring

This element can be the perfect finishing touch to a casual look with faded denim, avoiding the square shouldered formal aesthetic. Soft tailoring compliments the natural contours of the body and can be worn with a simple plain T-shirt, collarless shirt or polo and with denim jeans or tailoring.

Sports luxe

Not the nicest of terminology, but a rising trend all the same. Luxury sport inspired garments allow for a comfortably cool aesthetic. High-end sweat pants and shirts can be partnered with soft tailoring and simple white trainers – green and white Stan Smiths required.

Texture

Combining different textures and fabrics creates a dynamic that befits both a casual and more formal look with effortless charm. Soft cotton, breathable pique and linens are perfect for the summer months and can be layered with delicate Merino wools and cashmere.

The shirt jacket

Available in an eclectic mix of fabrics, this product captures the masculine features of a buttoned-up denim jacket but with a softer more intricate look and feel. To be worn with denim jeans or tailored trousers, the shirt jacket is featured across the seasonal suede trend for the ultimate style.

Buying suits off the rail

Is absolutely fine, but unless you’re extremely lucky, it won’t fit correctly. This is where a local tailor cannot be underestimated. Take your new suit and have it pinned, then in a week or so you have a fabulous bespoke suit made for you.
