Kuriakose Elias Chavara could not beviewed just a priest or a religiousmissionary, but was in fact much beyondthese dictums and was far ahead of histimes imbibing a spirit of metamorphosis,an ardent desire to bring about a volcanictransformation of a society deeply rooted inall sorts of evils and stigmas. Even longbefore the advent of Chattambi swamikal orSree Narayana Guru in the domain ofsocial reformation, Rev. Fr. Kuriakose Eliaspaved the path of a holistic social

revolution propounding Radical thoughtswhich was then an anathema to the

society.

Kuriakose Elias Chavara waspsychologically pledged towards

bringing an end to the mostvicious evil rampant in Keralanamely untouchability, whichwas creating divisiveness inthe social strata. He was hell-bent on bringing theuntouchables to themainstream and give them

the due Recognition whichwas a privilege enjoyed by very

few then.He started a Sanskrit School

which was open to all and it was thefirst step he taken to demolish the evil ofuntouchability.

Most of the social thinkers or Policyresearchers were oblivious to the fact that itwas Kuriakose Elias Chavara who firstintroduced the system of Free Noon Meals,clothing and study materials and womenempowerment by educating girls anddestitute home for poor at Kainakari. Toreach the poorest of the poor students, tomotivate and synergize them in pursuingstudies which subsequently paved the roadmap towards their upliftment and alsoproved to be successful in overcoming thesocial stigma attached to their lives.

In St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara one finds acombination of multiple traits. A true SocialReformer, an Educationist to the core, aprofessional Manager in the true sense ofthe term, and a prudent financial planner,all combined in one.

The congregation named CMI wasestablished in 1831 has presently itsactivities in 35 countries encompassingmyriad professionally ManagedEducational institutions, Health carecentres, Social service organizations,Pastoral work mission stations and severalpublishing houses.

As path followers of St.Chavara, CEVA alsoinitiated developmental programmes suchas Women Empowerment, ChildDevelopment, support to Poor andMarginalized and Educational Supportprogrammes.

Cyriac Elias Voluntary Association (CEVA) is aregistered Voluntary Organization establishedin 1987 by a group of socially committed CMI’swith the objective of promoting programmesand projects to improve the quality of life ofthe marginalized.

CEVA the term itself underscores the fact thatit always upholds the motto of Developmentand Progress of the marginalized section ofthe society regardless of caste, creed, colouror religion.

CEVA entering the threshold of the 30th year ofits meritorious, relentless, philanthropicpursuits aimed solely at the welfare andupliftment of the economically weakersections of the society has several milestones

to its credit, namely Empowerment BasedChild Rights Programme for Children andtheir Social Environment (CRiPSE),arranging a common platform for the seniorcitizens called Pranamam to interactconstructively, share their thoughts, problemsand arive at solutions, besides launchingBhupalana, a novel project aimed atcultivating a string of toxic free, organicvegetables for ensuring a healthy lifestyle.

CEVA has also been successful in initiatingIntegrated Community DevelopmentProject (ICDP) which includesEmpowerment of Women through SHG,Health care, Educational Support and amultitude of other Income Generation

Programmes such as Chendamelam,Pancharimelam, Food Processing Unit,Tailoring Unit, Drinking water Supply unit etcwhich have been progressing well.

Needless to point out that all the projects haveexclusively the stamp and signature of CEVAand the indelible impression of its relentlesspursuit for the welfare of the poor and theuntiring efforts taken for bringing theneglected sections into the mainstream of thesociety.

The theme of CEVA that is “Involve, Evolveand Sustain” has always remainedexceptionally tall and would continue to beso forever.

I am incredibly glad to deliver my message in the Annual Report coincidingwith the 30th Anniversary of CEVA. In this connection I take extreme pride &liberty in underscoring the selfless, seamless and the yeoman servicedelivered by CEVA during the three bygone decades towards uplifting thelives of the down trodden holding high the lofty traditional values &inspirations enshrined in the gospels of Christianity.

Some of the most noteworthy activities that needs special mention is theCRIPSE (Empowerment based child rights programme), Pranamam,Bhupalana, ICDP, Santwanam etc. In this regard I wish to convey mygratitude to CEVA for their efforts to syncretise the Socio-economicDevelopmental activities for the progress of the economically weaker sectionwith their lofty & towering ideals of “INVOLVE, EVOLVE,& SUSTAIN “ asreflected in the manifesto that all the more synergizes CEVAS stupendousefforts towards this direction.

CEVA has been relentlessly carrying out

the mission of Jesus, inspired and

motivated by its Heavenly Patron, St.

Kuriakose Elias Chavara, for the past twenty

nine years. It is entering the 30th year of its

existence. True to its name, it has always

been faithful to its Heavenly Patron’s mission

of glorifying God by transforming human

beings into fully human.

This report will tell us that CEVA has been always innovative in

launching projects and programs for enhancing the quality of

children, youth, elders, families and society. While doing good, CEVA

was always keeping in mind the thrust of the CMI Congregation:

“Commitment to the Poor and the Marginalized” in spite of the various

challenges it had to face in the past three years.

From 2014 January onwards, CEVA was delinked from the KKS,

Germany. It also experienced unexpected change and replacement

of its staff. With the help of God and through the powerful intercession

of St.Kuriakose Elias Chavara, the CEVA team, under the leadership of

Fr. Jince Padinjareyil CMI, could face all these challenges and proceed

with new vigor and enthusiasm.

Now CEVA is facing another serious challenge: Fr. Jince, the young

and vibrant secretary cum treasurer, is bidding farewell to CEVA. It is

disappointing for CEVA, and very personally for me. Relying on God

we go ahead and hope to get a new secretary for CEVA soon.

On this occasion I do congratulate Fr. Jince for his able, farsighted

and professionally competent leadership and wish him all the best

in his new assignment. Dear Fr. Jince, thanks a lot for everything.

Thank you for bringing out this beautiful report. All of us would be

missing you very badly. Kindly continue to be part of CEVA in all

possible ways also in future.

May this report be an inspiration to all who read it for imbibing the

spirit of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara who wanted to see the

transformation of human beings into fully human, especially the

It is a memorable and rejoicableoccasion for the CEVA family toproudly state that it has successfullyentered into the thresh-old of the 31styear of its existence having to its credit a wide rangeof successful activities in the realm of social commitment anddevelopment for the marginalized section of the society alwayscommitted to upholding the intrinsic values for which CEVA wasconstituted in the year 1987 ( 30 yrs before).CEVA has to its credit almost 250 major projects & 900 minorprojects through which it has been able to target aroundseventy five thousand beneficiaries involving of a hugeexpenditure of six hundred crores . CEVA could look back withpride having accomplished the basic tenets for which it hadbeen established such as animation and coordination of thesocial action of CMI congregation , co ordination and promotionof several developmental projects aiming the poorest of thepoor in the country, collecting and documenting variousdevelopmental and welfare programmes of government andalso making them available for those who need them andfunctioning as link between funding agencies and NGOsby conducting pre-funding assessment , coordinatingprojects and conducting evaluations.CEVA has identified itself with the poor through itsinnumerable philanthropic activities and always stoodwith the marginalized in times of need and despair,upholding the values our founder and mentorSt Kuriakose Elias Chavara held close to his heart.With Best Wishes

CounsellingThis is the basis for all the activities initiatedfor the child protection in Idukki. Throughcounselling we got information about thesituation of children in the family, school andcommunity. On the basis of informationthrough counselling all other programmeswere planned and executed. In the last twoyears we could reach out to 14302children in the project schools by givingsolid support to them to overcomeproblems, stress and helped to sharetheir happiness in life. We have very strongresource team including clinicalpsychologists, professional social workersand well trained counselors under this projectwho are solely committed to serve the childrenfor their empowerment and enrichment.

We have 22 Change Agent Team (CAT)schools with 1016 enthusiastic and energeticstudents who are the protectors of children inschools. They conducted severalprogrammes like awareness classes on thebasis of day observations, coordinatedvarious charitable activities with the supportof other students in the schools, engaged ineco conservation activities like recycling ofplastic, plastic free campus, wastemanagement etc. CAT act as liaisonbetween counsellor and students andthey are the guardians of schools.CRIPSE was launched on 1st July 2015 andpiloted in 22 CAT schools in Idukky districttaking into cognizance multifactors such asthe myriad issues plaguing the studentcommunity in Idukki, geographicalremoteness, which forms a major hindranceto children’s overall growth & Development.

Formation of ChildProtection PolicyBased on the problems revealed throughcounseling we had several discussionswith the students, teachers and the parentsfor effective formulation of child protectionpolicies to prevent frequent reporting of similarcases again in the school. The policy givesthe provision to children to raise voice againstviolation of their rights without any hassle andworry and the committee is responsible todeal the complaint and to take necessaryaction if the complaint is genuine.

SAMBHUYA 2017A CAT Get together

CEVA conducted a “child abuse, drug abuseprevention campaign” at Murickasserry bringingtogether Children from 22 Schools of the CRiPSEProject. Mr. RishiRaj Sing IPS, State ExciseCommissioner inaugurated the function. The aim ofthe programme was to create awareness among thechildren about the drug abuse and its hazard. Rev.Msgr.James Mangalassery presided over the function.Rev.Fr.Varghese Vithayathil CMI,Vicar General andModerator of CEVA was the chief guest and deliveredkeynote address. Mr.Joshy, State CommunityMobilization Head, Kerala Suchitwa Missionconducted awareness class for the Children. Around300 Children Participated in the Programme.

staging a performance in connection withGracias 2016 an event organized by Christ

University, CSA and sponsored by thestudents of Christ University Bangalore. In

fact this programme turned to be anopportunity and pride to showcase their

talents and to win the heart of a large,vibrant, art loving students of Christ

A novel initiative from CEVA, (bringing together the elderly especiallythose belonging to economically weaker section of society residingin and around Ernakulam, by attending to their daily needs andrequirements) was launched in 2014 coinciding with the InternationalDay of the Elderly.The objective of the initiative was to establish and share a commonplatform where the elderly congregate and indulge in constructiveand meaningful interaction on various issues, thoughts and at thesame time could give expressions to their aspirations.Presently Pranamam consists of 65 senior citizens; Group meetingsare held alternate Thursdays which provides an opportunity for

them to lay bare the issues concerning health and related financialdifficulties.To overcome these difficulties, CEVA initiated need based Treatmentsupport and medicines to the elders. Special attention is alsoextended to those from poor financial background by providingfood and nutritional kits and also periodically coordinating andconducting Awareness classes, arranging inspirational talks tokeep them agile and to adopt a positive outlook towards ageing.Apart from the above initiatives informative entertainmentprogrammes and festivities are also undertaken by CEVA forPranamam group members.

CEVA avails the services of Vayomithram project for the physicalwellbeing of Pranamam members through regular free medical

checkups and Medicines.

Lifestyle disease Detection CampCEVA arranged a lifestyle detection camp in consonance with

Community Development Project (ICDP) on July 18, 2016 at CEVABahvan Karikkamuri which included diabetic,

Bp, Cholesterol ECG tests etc.

EYE CAMPEye camp was conducted in

collaboration with Little Flower HospitalAngamaly on June 15, 2016, coincidingwith the international day against elderly

abuse awareness.

Health andHappiness

ProgrammesCEVA focused on happiness and well

being through conduct of severalawareness camps in yoga, exercisesand engaged elderly citizens in group

exercises towards improvement of theirhealth standards

LEISURE TRIPSCEVA creates happiness in elderly

persons through outing and leisureactivities. This year we have taken them

to Malyattur, Kalady ShankaracharyaMath and Sameeksha, trip organized

with games and otherrecreational activities.

CEVA through these enterprisingventures has been successful in moving

closer to the elderlywho were hitherto denied love,

care and attention.

Bhupalana, a novel venture,initiated by the elderly group ofCEVA consisting of 50 elderlyparents, aimed at cultivating poisonfree vegetables or organicvegetables (on half an acre land ata prime location in Kochi suitedfor a healthy lifestyle), wasinaugurated by MararikulamGrama Panchayat President Adv. DPriyesh on 6th Jan 2015.Age was not a determining factoror a stumbling block for this elderlygroup in their drive towardscultivation of Toxic free vegetablesmeant for healthy living so as toensure a better standard of life.They turned out to be Role modelsfor the society by identifyingthemselves with Mother Earth andengaged in cultivating toxic freevegetables such as Bananas,Cabbage, Cauliflower, ladiesfinger, spinach, tomato , greenchilly etc by regularly watering &nurturing them twice a day.The produces of the vegetablefarm is now much sought after bythe local residents as it turned outto be a final remedy for them fromconsuming the poisonousvegetables affecting their health.

UNITED WAY WORLD WIDECommunity Development ProjectCEVA in association with Air Products initiated several community developmentalprojects in the 15th ward of Puthencruz Grama panchayath. The projects aimat a holistic development, progress and well being of the community of theward. Under the projects we have initiated the following.♦ Health Insurance Coverage♦ Medical Camps

PROGRAMMEWe have provided personal accidentpolicy coverage of one lakh andUniversal Health Insurance Policycoverage of Rupees Thirtythousand. 343 households and 1344family members were insuredthrough Health Insurance scheme.

Medical CampsCEVA organized medical camp on life styledisease detection for the communitymembers with the support of SunriseHospital, Kakkanad. Checkups forcholesterol, diabetics, blood pressurewere conducted during the camp.CEVA has proposed to initiate moreinnovative programmes such assustainable waste disposal programme,Drinking water supply and womenempowerment porgrammes.

The term Santhwanam signifies a noveland a noble initiative from CEVAtargeting HIV/AIDS infected and affectedfamilies in Kerala. The main objectiveof the project is to combat HIV/AIDSpatients by concientizing the societyabout its cause and effects. Since itsinception in May 2010, CEVA has beensuccessfully assisting and caring morethan 200children directly and manymore through other likemindedorganizations focusing mainly inErnakulam and Thrissur Districts.Better home, Medical and treatmentassistance, health and nutritionalsupplements, income generationactivities, marriage assistance areprovided to them.

OASIS10 family members are directlybenefiting through this programme.We have formed group of familymembers of chronically ill patients inErnakulum District. They all areassisted with Treatment support,Educational Support, IncomeGeneration Programmes,Counselling, AwarenessProgrammes, money savingprogrammes, Leisure trips andCelebrations

CMI SOCIAL APOSTHOLATE NEWS LETTERIn current fast changing and challenging scenarioit is highly important to document the socialwelfare programmes implemented by CMIcongregation all over the world. The congregationhad initiated several programmes for the welfareof marginalized as all these welfare initiatives didnot get the required visibility and acceptance inthe society. As the sole coordinating agency ofCMI it is the responsibility of CEVA to make thecommunity aware about the programmes initiatedby CMI all over the World. Through CMI Newsletterwhich is published 4 times a year we couldconscientize the community and benefactorsabout the CMI’s social welfare schemes.CHAVRA FUNDChavara fund is the noble venture of the CMICongregation to offer support the poor andmarginalized in the community. The fund is utilizednamely towards 3 different purposes namelyChavara Awas Yojana (Housing) Chavara CancerMukti Yojana (Cancer care) and ChavaraVyavasayik Prashikshan Yojana ( professionaleducation). During the last two years over 80 lakhs

were spent for the purpose under ChavaraFund.CURTAINS DOWN ON YEAR OF MERCYThe CMI congregation held its Concludingceremony pertaining to the YEAR OF MERCYat CMI GeneralHouse on 13 November 2016.Beneficiaries of CMI congregation gatheredfor the function as a part of the concludingceremony of the year of mercy. On theoccasion, Rev Fr Paul Achandi CMI, PriorGeneral stated “CMI congregation feels moreproud and happy to invite beneficiaries of CMIand CEVA who are more close to us. This isthe message which we convey by celebratingthe jubilee year of mercy”.Several culturalprogrammes were held by the Elderly groupof CEVA (Pranamam), chendamelam by theteam from Udaya colony Gandhinagar Kochiand performance by Gems of CEVA. VicarGeneral Rev. Fr. Vargehse Vithayathil CMI,Rev. Fr. Saju Chackalackal, Rev. Fr. SebastianThekkedath , Antony Elamthottam, Rev. Fr.Johney Edappulavan blessed the occasionwith their presence.

MOULDING FUTURE SOCIAL WORKERSIt is necessary that we need very committed socially sensitized social workers to provide betterservice to the society especially for the poor and marginalized. CEVA pledged to provide maximumexposure to student social workers through Community outreach programmes, Social workresearch, Reporting & Documentation and Project Proposal Trainings. We have networkingwith 12 social work colleges in Kerala and these colleges are regularly sending their students toCEVA for their internships programme and those who are performing well during their field workdays will be appointed as voluntary staff with stipend.26
