STUDENT COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT DISCUSSION GROUP The Center for Leadership and Social Change is hosting a facilitated discussion about student volunteerism on September 4 th , 2013 at 6:00pm in the Dunlap Success Center. A handful of students will talk about their community engagement experiences, and how they found and chose those opportunities. Free food and snacks will be provided. If you would like to participate, please email [email protected]. FEDERAL WORK STUDY & OPS AVAILABLE POSITIONS Identity Exploration Student Assistant Assist with ongoing efforts that encompass programming, research, and training related to multiculturalism, identity, and diversity awareness. This is an opportunity to learn facilitation skills, training and program development, as well as teamwork to operate successful cluster programming and research. Requirements are: active in personal growth and identity development, experience or interest in facilitation, ability to work individually and as a team, basic research experience, and familiarity with MS Office (Word, Excel specifically). Youth Programs – Assistant Mentor Coordinator Assistant Mentor Coordinators (AMCs) are responsible for assisting with the management of our mentoring program at a Leon County School. AMCs are responsible for helping the Mentor Coordinator (MC) create and sustain positive relationships with school administrators and personnel, teachers, children and college students (the mentors). They work collaboratively with other Youth Programs staff to create and plan mentor training sessions and an end of semester recognition event. AMCs are also responsible for aiding mentors in creating/developing activities to help mentees become successful academically and socially. AMCs have the primary duty of transporting mentors (using office vans) to their mentoring site(s) so a good driving history and valid car insurance is needed. The ability to work well with school and college partners, to community efficiently and effectively, and a willingness to “go above and beyond” in an effort to help the children, mentors, and the program be successful are necessary to the success of this position. This position is 10-15 hours a week (depending on the work study award amount) with most hours being completed at a Leon County School. Mentor Mentors play a vital role in helping children we serve succeed in school and in life. All we ask is that our mentors enjoy working with children, are able to serve between the hours of 7:30AM and 6PM (mentors do not have to work this entire time frame, you get to choose the hours that work best for your schedule), are reliable and dependable, and are committed to seeing the children we serve succeed in life. You must commit to spending at least fall and spring semesters mentoring at least one student, spend at least 60 minutes per week during the fall and spring semesters mentoring at least one student, honor ALL commitments made to your mentee(s), serve as a positive role model, attend the required mentor training session in addition to one reflection session each semester, complete all evaluations as requested, have a good driving history and valid car insurance, the ability to successfully pass an FBI Level II criminal background and sexual predator check, and be patient and understand that the mentoring relationship is a process that takes work and time. MULTICULTURAL LEADERSHIP SUMMIT As the new academic year begins so does our planning for the 2014 Multicultural Leadership Summit! The 2014 Multicultural Leadership Summit is an annual conference-style program that seeks to aid students in exploring the topics of multiculturalism and diversity. The summit provides opportunities for participants to learn about their identities and how they impact the ways in which they chose to show up in the world each day. For the past several years, the Multicultural Leadership Summit has educated students to empower them to be agents of social change in an increasingly diverse and global community. We are in the process of creating a MLS Committee for the planning of the event. The application is due by Tuesday, September 10th, 2013 by 5:00pm. PEACEJAM INFORMATION SESSION PeaceJam will be hosting an information session on Thursday, September 5th from 5-6pm in the Dunlap Student Success Center RM 2201. PeaceJam is an international education program built around Nobel Peace Prize Laureates who work personally with youth to pass on the spirit, skills, and wisdom they embody. The goal of PeaceJam is to inspire a new generation of leaders who will transform themselves, their local communities, and the world. The Florida State University serves as the headquarters for the Southeast PeaceJam region. Florida State students serve as PeaceJam Scholars and participate in all aspects of the PeaceJam program. Students at Florida State University participate in all aspects of the PeaceJam program. They provide leadership on planning committees, work with youth on the PeaceJam curriculum, engage in the Global Call to Action, and serve as mentors at PeaceJam Conferences. HEALTHY NOLES Join Healthy Noles and be involved in advocating, expanding your knowledge, educating your peers, having fun, and networking! Help

promote an overall healthy lifestyle by providing your peers with information regarding healthy topics such as: Nutrition, Minority Health, Fitness, Sexual Health, Alcohol, Body Image, Tobacco, Drug Use, and More! WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE We are thrilled to announce a collaborative effort between Women4FSU and the Center for Leadership and Social Change. The inaugural Women's Leadership Institute is to be held October 11th and 12th, 2013 on Florida State's campus. Rooted in the belief that leadership is learned through experience, education, and reflection, WLI will: focus on women's leadership development, create a dynamic theory to practice learning environment, and invite FSU women students to learn with and from FSU women, faculty, staff, and alumni. Any undergraduate student is eligible to apply and applications must be submitted by September 16th at 5:00pm for consideration. RYDELL HIGH CARNIVAL Be a part of the Rydell High Carnival at the Askew Student Life Center! Show off your organization by creating a carnival game or giving away free food before Grease. SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP SEMINAR Are you interested in learning how you can help change the word through social entrepreneurship? Beginning on Friday, September 6th at 12:00-1:30pm, there will be a 12-week discussion every Friday at Devore Moore Center (BEL 150). These discussions will cover a range of topics from economic development to human trafficking to technology and more, and each discussion will also include local leaders and community members involved in entrepreneurship innovations. Come learn how you can help make a difference! MEDLIFE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

MEDLIFE is a volunteer-based chapter committed to improving the infrastructure of impoverished areas. The organization travels to Peru and/or Ecuador on “Project Corps” trips throughout the year to

complete construction projects alongside professionals and community residents. Projects include, but are not limited to, building houses, medical clinics, bathrooms, water systems, stairs, painting, and landscaping. During the semester between these trips, the focus will be on volunteer projects in Tallahassee and surrounding areas. The mission is to speak to the people of each low-income town in focus and listen to their unique long-term needs. The first meeting is on Tuesday, September 17th in the Student Services Building. THE COLOR RUN If you are interested in being a part of “The Happiest 5K on the Planet”, the Color Run is seeking volunteers to help on Saturday, September 7th at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center (formally the Leon County Civic Center). The Color Run is a unique 5k event that celebrates healthiness, happiness, individuality, and giving back to the community. ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IN ECUADOR Interested in environmental issues in Ecuador? Check out this blog by Eric Maclaurin at ecuadorenv.blogspot.com! The blog covers such issues as oil exploitation in the Amazon, deforestation, mining, and damming the Andes. For those interested in contributing, Ecominga (www.ecominga.org) is a foundation that is working to study and protect the Eastern slope of the Andes between Bano and Puyo.

BLUE LIGHT MEMORIAL 5K RUN/WALK The College of Criminology & Criminal Justice is hosting its first 5K to raise funds for a permanent Fallen Officer Memorial at Eppes Hall. The Blue Light Memorial 5K will be held on September 11th to honor our alumni who have given the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the line of duty. Food trucks will be on site at 5:30pm, the race kicks off at 6:30pm, and at 7:45pm, a candlelight vigil will take place to honor the six alumni whose names will be engraved on the memorial. Grab all of your friends and come out to enjoy running (or walking!), food trucks, and a candlelight vigil to honor fallen heroes. To register, visit www.criminology.fsu.edu. Ghoulish games are taking over the caboose area, carnival games will abound throughout the grounds, the spooky farm will house our witch in the kitchen, and the haunted trail will be scarier than ever! Also, back by popular demand, the 501st Star Wars re-enactors will be at the event in full regalia. Volunteer opportunities extend throughout the month of October and up to the event, as well as after. If you are interested in volunteering for the event, this is a great opportunity to get to know the museum, its staff and current volunteers, as well as be a part of a community event that is loads of fun! FLORIDA BAPTIST CHILDREN’S HOMES The Tallahassee Florida Baptist Children’s Homes (FBCH - www.FBCHomes.org) campus would like to invite you to their new community garden program and to visit their campus. All the plants are planted, and there are plans for a fence building party soon! There are many other fun ways to contribute though. Additionally, their campus always needs basic lawn care, possible painting and other projects. Their beautiful 36-acre campus with a sports area, small pool, etc. welcomes you to host an event for your group. It is perfect for work/play days. ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES TUTOR TRAINING If you would like to help newcomers develop their English skills, become a member of a great organization, meet people from around the world, and learn new skills from an accredited non-profit educational organization, then this is the workshop for you. Become a volunteer tutor. No foreign language skills or prior teaching experience required! The workshop will be held on Saturday, September 21st from 1:00-5:00pm. This workshop will be held in the Literacy Classroom on the 3rd floor of the Collins Main Library at 200 W. Park Avenue. KIDS ON BIKES INTERNSHIP The Capital City Cyclists helps to implement and teach the Florida Traffic and Bicycle Safety and Skills Class in Leon County Elementary Schools and offers a hands on management and teaching opportunity. Bicycle Educator main responsibilities include assisting with class management, developing curriculum, daily teaching area set up, student instruction and evaluation. The intent is to educate 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade children on the safe and proper operation of their bicycles. You can be the Capital City Cyclists Bicycle Safety Educator Intern at various public Elementary schools in Leon County! This is a 15-20 hour weekly time commitment with a $1000 stipend per semester. LUTHERAN SOCIAL SERVICES OF NORTH FLORIDA

Lutheran Social Services of North Florida’s mission is to develop, fund, implement, and administer programs to address the unmet social service needs of the low-income residents in the community. There are 3 programs that LSSNF offers to its residents: the Inn-Between Transitional Housing Program, which is a bridge to help transition families from a desperate homeless situation to

a secure home environment; “The French Quarter,” which is a ten unit apartment building for individuals with disabilities and/or special needs; and Computer Refurbishing and Technical Assistance, which is a computer refurbishing training program designed to get computers in the hands of handicapped individuals and very low income families. The following are current volunteer opportunities: Rehabilitation of an Inn-Between Home: Volunteers will be needed in all aspects of the project for an Inn-Between Transitional Home in Tallahassee, FL. It is within walking distance of FSU. It will take place over several Saturdays in October and November. Volunteers will be working to make this currently unlivable home habitable. Come help make a difference in the lives of children and their parents who are experiencing homelessness. Computer Refurbishing and Technical Assistance (CRTA) Volunteers: The CRTA program is looking for several volunteers to help refurbish desktop computers to Windows 7 standards on an ongoing basis. Volunteers would be asked to be available for 3-5 hours a week. Work would range from physically dismantling and rebuilding desktop computers to software installation.
