Chapter 1: Overview

The IO16 card expands the digital and analog I/O capabilities of the VENUE SC48 console.

Using IO16, you can insert analog and digital outboard equip-ment on any VENUE system input channel, FX Return, or out-put channel. You can also use the IO16 to send and receive au-dio to and from outboard equipment such as system processors, recording devices, playback sources, and effects units.

All digital and analog I/O are digitally controlled, fully recall-able and fully routable from your console software.

For IO16 card installation instructions, see “Installing the IO16 Card” on page 3.

For instructions on making connections using the IO16 card, see “IO16 Connections” on page 8.

IO16 Card Features and Capabilities• Eight channels of AES3 digital outputs via four

XLR3-male connectors. Each output connector carries two digital audio channels.

• Eight channels of AES3 digital inputs via four XLR3-fe-male connectors. Each input connector carries two digi-tal audio channels, and provides Sample Rate Conversion (SRC).

• Eight channel pairs of analog I/O via 1/4” balanced TRS connectors.

Chapter 2: Installing the IO16 Card

The IO16 Card is installed in slot E on the back of the SC48 console, and is connected via ribbon cables to the existing Main IO card inside the console.

This section explains each of the following tasks required to install an IO16 card into an SC48:

• Open the Top Panel of the console.

• Remove the existing AO16 output card located in slot D of the console.

• Remove either the slot E card slot cover, or remove the AO16 card in slot E if you have a second output card in-stalled, and remove the associated ribbon cable.

• Install the IO16 card.

• Reinstall the AO16 card installed in slot D and close the Top Panel.

To open the Top Panel of the SC48:

1 Shut down your system, and turn off power to the SC48.

2 Disconnect any power cables from the SC48, as well as any other audio cables that may get in your way.

3 Do one of the following:

• If your console’s Top Panel uses hex screws, use the pro-vided 2mm hex driver to remove the 26 screws that se-cure the Top Panel to the console chassis.

– or –

• If your console’s Top Panel uses Torx screws, use the pro-vided Torx driver to remove the 26 screws that secure the Top Panel to the console chassis.

4 Hold the front edge of the Top Panel and carefully lift it up-wards to a vertical position.

To use the IO16 card, you must be running VENUE soft-ware 2.9 or higher. Go to the Options > System page to check which version of VENUE software you are running. To find information on upgrading your software, go to www.avid.com. Upgrading your software to VENUE soft-ware 2.9 should be done prior to installing the card.

Use only a straight end driver, not a ball end driver, when removing or replacing the Top Panel hex screws.

If you sense any resistance when lifting the Top Panel up-wards, do not force it. The Top Panel has slots that pivot on posts attached to the sides of the console chassis (Figure 3). Removing the Top Panel screws may cause the Top Panel to slide towards the front of the console so that the Top Panel slots are not correctly aligned with the posts. If this occurs, slide or push the Top Panel towards the rear of the console before lifting, making sure the posts are correctly aligned with the slots.

5 To lock the Top Panel in the vertical position, tighten the two interior captive thumbscrews located on the top left and top right sides of the console.

To remove the AO16 card in slot D:

1 On the back panel of the SC48, locate the AO16 card in slot D.

2 Inside the console, locate the AO16 output card and loosen the two captive thumbscrews that secure the card to the con-sole chassis.

3 Disconnect the 50-pin ribbon cable from the port on the card by moving the tabs on each side of the connector out-ward. Leave the other end of the cable connected.

4 On the back of the console, remove the four screws that se-cure the card to the console and gently slide the card out of the console. Set the card and the screws aside. You will rein-stall the AO16 card after you install the IO16 card.

To remove either the slot E card slot cover or the AO16 card in slot E (if applicable):

1 Inside the console, locate the Hub 48 card and its five I/O card ports (noted in Figure 8). Disconnect the ribbon cable connected to the top port (labelled “J1 Slot E” on the Hub48 card). The other end of this cable is connected to either the slot E card slot cover, or connected to an AO16 card if you in-stalled a second AO16 card. This cable will be removed from the console entirely.

2 On the back panel of the SC48, locate output slot E.

3 Do one of the following depending on your configuration:

• Remove the four screws holding the card slot cover in place. After removing the screws, you can use a flathead screwdriver to pry the cover away from the slot. Remove the ribbon cable that is attached to the slot cover.

– or –

• If you installed a second AO16 card in slot E, remove the four screws securing the card to the console and gently slide the card out of the console. Remove the attached ribbon cable along with the card.

Installing the IO16 card:

1 Inside the console, locate the Main IO card (under the now-removed AO16 cards) and connect the two included rib-bon cables to the following ports as labelled on the Main IO card (see Figure 10):

• J28 IOx

– and –

• J29 IOx

Make sure the keyed connector is oriented correctly in each socket. Secure each connection by moving the tabs on each side of the connector inward. Check to make sure the cables are connected securely.

2 Route the two ribbon cables that you connected to the Main IO card next to the right-inner wall of the chassis. Loop the ca-bles as shown below in Figure 11 (so that the cable connected to port J28 is on top of the cable connected to port J29).

3 Remove the IO16 card from its packing material. Hold the card by its edges.

You will connect these cables to the IO16 card, so make sure they are easily accessible after you slide the IO16 card into the console.

4 Slide the output card into the slot, holding the two ribbon cables against the inner wall of the console (see Figure 13). Press firmly on both ends of the card so that it fits snugly in the slot, making sure the ribbon cables are not pinched be-tween the card and the chassis.

5 Inside the console, adjust the position of the card and the ribbon cables as necessary, and tighten the two captive thumbscrews to secure the card to the inside of the console.

6 Connect the two ribbon cables from the Main IO card to the IO16 card as follows:

• Connect the cable connected to port J28 IOx on the Main IO to port J18 on the IO16 card.

– and –

• Connect the cable connected to port J29 IOx on the Main IO to port J17 on the IO16 card.

7 Inside the console, locate an available power cable. An avail-able power cable is located in a cable bundle running along the right-inside wall of the console. Power cables have yellow, brown, black, and red wires attached to a white connector.

8 Cut the cable tie that holds the power cable in the bundle, making sure not to cut any wires. Free the power cable from the bundle.

9 Rebundle the other cables and secure with them with the in-cluded cable tie.

10 Connect the power cable to the socket on the IO16 card. When the power cable is correctly connected, the yellow wire should be the first wire on the left. Check to make sure the ca-ble is connected securely.

11 Secure theIO16 card to the back of the console using the four screws you removed earlier.

To reinstall the AO16 card in slot D and close the Top Panel:

1 Slide the AO16 card gently into slot D, and secure it to the back of the console using the four screws you removed earlier.

2 Inside the console, reconnect the 50-pin ribbon cable to the card that you disconnected in step 3 on page 4.

3 Tighten the two captive thumbscrews to secure the card to the inside of the console.

If you have to twist the cables to orient them correctly when connecting them to the IO16 card, or connectors are not lin-ing up properly, you are connecting the cables to the wrong ports.

4 Loosen the two interior captive thumbscrews holding the Top Panel upright, and gently lower the Top Panel into posi-tion.

5 To secure the Top Panel to the console chassis, locate the Torx screws included with the IO16 card. Replace the 26 hex screws that you removed originally with the Torx screws using the included Torx driver.

6 Go on to “Completing and Confirming Installation” on page 7.

Completing and Confirming InstallationAfter installing the IO16 card, you should confirm that you have installed it successfully.

To complete and confirm installation:

1 Reconnect the power cable and any other cables to the SC48 or the Mix Rack.

1 Power up your VENUE system, making sure that all amps or speakers connected to your system are muted or turned off.

2 When successfully installed, the IO16 card is auto-detected and shown on the Options > Devices page.

3 Go to the Patchbay page and click the FOH tab under the In-puts, Outputs, and Directs, and Inserts tabs to verify that the cards inputs and outputs are available.

The Top Panel has slots that pivot on posts attached to the sides of the console chassis (Figure 3). When lowering the Top Panel, the Top Panel slots may not stay correctly aligned with the posts. Gently slide or push the Top Panel towards the rear of the console while lowering, making sure the posts are correctly aligned with the slots. This way, the Top Panel screw holes align with console chassis screw holes.

It is recommended that you replace your original Top Panel hex screws with the included Torx screws. If your console shipped with Torx screws, use the original screws or the in-cluded screws.

If the IO16 card does not appear, you may need to upgrade your software to VENUE 2.9 or higher. On your system, go to the Options > System page to check which version of the software is on your system. If you do need to upgrade, go to our website (www.avid.com) for information on upgrading your VENUE software.

IO16 Connections

IO16 allows you to connect digital and analog outboard equipment to your VENUE system. You can use these connections to in-sert processing on individual input and output channels or to patch processing to Aux busses and FX returns. Signal routing for the IO16 is done on the VENUE software’s Patchbay page.

Using IO16, you can make the following types of connections:

AES Digital Inputs and Outputs 1–8

(Balanced XLR Connectors)

Connect the two-channel digital inputs and outputs of external processors to any of the eight AES/EBU digital output and in-put connectors in this section.

Connect any digital output destination (such as a recording device or broadcast feed) to any of the outputs in this section.

Connect any digital sound source (such as a CD player) to any of the inputs in this section.

Analog Inputs and Outputs 9–16

(Balanced 1/4-inch TRS Connectors)

Connect the analog inputs and outputs of external processors to any of these analog output and input pairs.

Connect any analog output destination (such as a recording device or broadcast feed) to any of the outputs in this section.

Connect any analog sound sources (such as a CD player) to any of the inputs in this section.

For information on signal routing for equipment connected to the IO16, including instructions on patching and enabling hardware inserts, see the guide that came with your console.

The IO16 card’s digital inputs support 24-bit, 48 kHz digital signals. Input signals with other sample rates are sample-rate converted to 48 kHz using SRC. This lets you connect a wide variety of digital sources without having to be concerned with synchronization and clock connections. SRC, however, induces processing delay to the incoming digital signal. See “Sample Rate Conversion Latency” on page 10 for more information.
