IOM REGIONAL RESPONSE TO
THE SYRIA CRISIS 2014
IOM provides assistance to internally displaced persons, stranded
migrants and third-country refugees inside Syria as well as Syrian
refugees, Iraqi and Lebanese returnees and vulnerable host
communities in the neighbouring countries of Iraq, Jordan,
Lebanon, and Turkey.
Syria: IOM provided
emergency Non-Food
items (NFIs) for 19,560
displaced and affected
individuals in cross-line and
hard to reach areas in Rural
Damascus and Al-Hasakeh
governorates.
Jordan: Under the
leadership of the MoH and
in cooperation with WHO,
UNICEF, UNHCR and
partners, IOM supported the
fourth national polio
campaign 26 – 30 Oct
2014 through providing 16
cars and 3 buses to
transport the MOH
vaccination staff in Irbid ,
Mafraq, Zarqa, Karak Ma’an
and Ajloun governorates.
Turkey: IOM continues
with its multisectoral
assistance in the south east
of Turkey focusing mainly
on : NFI , winterisation and
voucher program in Hatay,
Transportation service in
Adiyman camp, access to
school in Urfa and Mersin
province and support for
food kitchen in Gaziantep.
Lebanon: On 14
November IOM launched a
new report, “Refugees at
Home: A Livelihoods
Assessment of Lebanese
Returnees from Syria.” The
report confirms that
Lebanese returnees from
Syria remain a particularly
vulnerable group with
characteristics very similar
to those of Syrian refugees.
Iraq: 2,237 individuals
were transported from the
Ibrahim al-Khalil border
crossing to Qushtipa,
Darashakran, Baserma and
Harir camps in Erbil
governorate. Most of these
families originated from
Kobane, Syria.

Asilah’s Story FROM INSIDE SYRIA
Asilah, 28, is displaced from Jobar (2 KM from Damascus city-center under ongoing violence)
where she lived with her husband in his family’s house making income from a vegetable shop.
The armed conflict disrupted the neighbourhood severely: the family’s house was directly hit by
a mortar, two of her nephews were killed while the house was rendered inhabitable. The family
soon moved to Kafar Batnah in East Ghouta (Rural Damascus) escaping the violence. Later,
East Ghouta came under siege and the humanitarian situation quickly deteriorated. Asilah’s
family managed to take advantage of a one day cease-fire on a route near Kafar Batnah and
travelled to As-Sweida. Now she lives with her husband in a tent. Her husband, who is not fit to
do hard work, tries to take any opportunity to generate income. The few workdays he can have
causes him sever morbid fatigue to the extent of bone fracture in certain cases. Through IOM,
Asilah and her 5 children received NFI and shelter support: a fan, a chargeable light, and a
garbage bin; the family was also able to move from their tent to a collective shelter set up by
IOM to protect her family and others from the cold winter approaching.
