TRANSCRIPT
As the international community moves forward in mobilizing, implementing and monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), IOM is committed to supporting the Government of Timor-‐Leste to attain its long-‐term sustainable development objectives outlined in the ‘National Strategic Development Plan 2011-‐2030.’ Over the years, IOM Timor-‐Leste has been working in disaster risk reduction (DRR), community stabilization, counter-‐trafficking and protection issues, border management and health migration. A number of IOM Timor-‐Leste’s activities integrate the SDGs into the provision of technical assistance and advice to strengthen institutional capacity and increase public awareness at community, municipal and national levels.
Assisting vulnerable and high-‐risk groups to access early diagnosis and treatment services for TB. IOM and the Ministry of Health, “Systematic Screening for High Risk Groups in Timor-‐Leste” program targets high-‐risk groups living in congregated settings
such as rural communities, universities, prisons, and police departments in Dili and Ermera. The screening provides the first evidence based research for prevalence rates in Timor-‐Leste, and aims to increase health coverage, build the capacity of medical staff, improve health-‐seeking behaviors and reduce transmission.
Strengthening response to climate change and natural disasters through Disaster Risk Reduction and building community resilience to address climate related challenges. The Disaster Risk Reduction – Building Community Resilience In Timor-‐
Leste (DRRBCR) program enhances community disaster preparedness and risk mitigation behaviors through emergency response trainings with village and municipal disaster management committees, the integration of early warning systems into community radio station programming, awareness raising campaigns and the promotion of disaster resilient/sustainable agricultural techniques.
Providing support to government institutions to combat Trafficking in Persons (TIP). IOM works closely with the Ministry of Justice and Timor-‐Leste National Police within the context of TIP prevention, technical cooperation and direct assistance. Activities
include trainings for law enforcement officers, improving national capacity in the exchange of intelligence information and systematic data collection, and mapping current trends in internal and transnational TIP, as well as other irregular transnational migration.
Building strong partnerships and coordinating with stakeholders to increase IOMs capacity to deliver programs in DRR, counter-‐trafficking and migration health. IOM and its partners in government, the private sector and civil society are committed to
continuing to support Timor-‐Leste’s long-‐term sustainable development objectives. IOMs partners include USAID-‐OFDA, the United States Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons (JTIP), the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection, the Ministry of Justice, Timor-‐Leste National Police and the Ministry of Health.
IOM TIMOR-‐LESTE AND THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
Improving food security and nutrition through working with community farmers and schools to establish keyhole gardens. IOM has delivered training and support to community farmers in 32 villages and 26 schools in 7 municipalities across Timor-‐
Leste. The DRR activities introduce sustainable agricultural techniques, improve nutrition within families and school feeding programs, and increase food security.
