BioGENEius Challenge – Judges Needed!

IOWA BIOGENEIUS CHALLENGE – MARCH 28TH IN AMES, IOWA We are seeking 3-5 volunteers to help judge high school biotech projects at the State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa (SSTFI) and select an Iowa BioGENEius winner and four runner-ups. The judging takes place from approximately 8:00am to 1:00pm on March 28th at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames.

INTERNATIONAL BIOGENEIUS CHALLENGE – JUNE 3RD IN PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA We are also seeking five volunteers who would like to be considered for the International BioGENEius Challenge or the GenePool Competition – a side event similar to a fast-paced “Shark Tank”-like pitching competition. Competition coordinators will review the list of interested volunteers provided by all state biotech associations and select a handful to judge. Should you be chosen for the International Challenge or GenePool Competition, you will receive a full convention pass to the BIO International Convention - a great event for those involved in the biotech community! Preferred qualifications for International BioGENEius judges include:

• Education: Doctoral degrees in related area(s) preferred, although Master’s degrees combined with work experience strongly considered.

• Professional Experience: Five years or more with biotechnology or related field (i.e., business and industry, academia, etc.)

• Prior experience in judging research projects, especially college and/or high school levels o Special Note: No preparatory work or follow-up commitments are required

STEM Mentoring: The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa is currently seeking community volunteers to serve as mentors in a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) program for 2nd-5th grade members at the Frank J. Ross Boys & Girls Club at Moore Elementary School. The program will run once a week, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Thursdays. We’re looking for volunteers who will be able to commit to volunteering consistently with the program, would enjoy working with kids, and are interested in contributing to their community. Mentors will receive curriculum prior to sessions and will have all materials available for the session. Mentor/mentee teams will be exploring, experimenting and discovering STEM through hands on, real life experiences. Units include water and aquatic wildlife, moon and space as well as others. Volunteers should be prepared to get a little dirty and have a lot of fun.
