President’s MessageFebruary 2011

Dear Alumni, Parents, Students and Friends,

On behalf of the faculty and staff allow me to wish each of you a veryhappy, healthy and holy New Year! Over the years I am sure you havereceived a similar greeting; however, I would think that not everyone would include theword “holy” in the wish for the New Year. As I look at this, I think of a stool with threelegs – obviously the stool cannot stand with only two legs – the third is needed for balance, stability and strength. Likewise, a blessing for the New Year must include holiness for all of us are called to be holy in God’s sight. This will help insure that wehave a happy and healthy New Year.

My first six months at “The Prep” have been everything I imagined. Busy is an under-statement! Our campus is active from 6:30 am when students begin to arrive until 9:00pm (or later on many nights) when our young men are making their tired way homeafter a full day of activity. As I walk through the campus I witness teachers motivatingand educating young men in each classroom, students attentive and engaged in variousvenues, coaches preparing and executing practices and games, moderators planning andreadying for meetings and matches. Each and every day Iona Prep develops the totalIona Man: mind, heart, soul and body.

As I mentioned in my last letter to our school community, Iona Prep will celebrate onehundred years of service to the young men in the metropolitan area in 2016. We havebegun assessing our needs, our wants and our dreams. Over the next few months we willactively engage the larger Prep community in the process. With advances in technology, with changes in society, with our world becoming a smaller place, Iona Prep must continue answering the challenges of this technology charged society. We must continueto improve upon our methods of conveying Jesus’ message of salvation to the worldthrough each and every Iona Man.

The next few pages of the Iona Prep news will let you know how we are responding tothe needs of our world today, tomorrow and in the years to come. Iona Prep is a dynamiceducational community – always on the move to deliver the Gospel message in new andexciting ways. I hope you enjoy reading about your school – a school built on the foundation of Sacred Scripture, teachings of our Catholic Church and the traditions ofthe Edmund Rice Christian Brothers.

As always, may God our Father, Jesus His Son and the Holy Spirit continue to bless younow and throughout the New Year!

Bro. Thomas R. Leto, CFCPresident

Principal’s MessageFebruary 2011

Dear Alumni, Parents, Students and Friends,

When I asked one of our visiting eighth-graders how his day had gone,he replied, “Everyone has so much energy! I really like it.” That aboutsums it up; there is a palpable energy within the building and the entire Iona communityis participating. Upon the recommendation of Bro. Leto the administration is currentlyreading The Global Achievement Gap by Tony Wagner. The book calls us as educatorsto look at how we are preparing our students for the world in which they will work, adifferent one from today. The author challenges American high schools and colleges tochange how they approach the education of their students and notes that emphasis oncritical thinking, problem-solving, and global awareness are key factors in improving thelevel of American education. We are taking this very seriously.

As we come to the middle of this school year we are planning for the 2011-2012 yearand we have much to look forward to. The class of 2015 has been sent their acceptancesand we anticipate a lively class. We will be adding Mandarin Chinese as a language option, and are planning some alternative courses online and before the traditionalschool day. Our faculty has stepped up in this area with a variety of suggestions includingGlobalization, Chinese History, Adventure Lit, and Criminal Justice.

You will enjoy seeing on the following pages many examples of the activities which tookplace in the first semester. Our AP Government blog has been a successful merger ofRich Salerno’s AP Government class and Charlie Sloat’s nationally-ranked forensicsteam. Our SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) group, moderated by NancyKessler, gave a powerful presentation on the day of the Great American Smoke-Out.In addition you will note the number of service events in which Iona has participated. Many charities ask for our aid during the winter season and although we cannot helpthem all we are happy when we can provide some assistance. During the February breaktwo groups will go on service immersion trips. Bro. Leto and Kevin Kelton and I willbring a group to St. Croix to work with an agency there. Maria DeCaro, Ryan Mahoney,Dana Pisani, and Phil Sallustio will take twenty students to New Orleans for Iona’s thirdtrip to work with Operation Helping Hands.

We are very proud of our school and encourage you to visit our website to keep up withall that is happening. If you have not visited the school in a while and you are in theneighborhood I encourage you to stop by. There are old and new faces but the spirit ofIona remains the same. May God bless each of you and your families. You are always inour prayers.

Sincerely,

Maureen B. KiersPrincipal

AP Government Debate Blogs - In response to Bro. Leto’s chal-lenge to the faculty to enhance critical thinking skills among Iona Prep stu-dents and utilize technology in the classroom, faculty members RichardSalerno and Charles Sloat ’84 established a blog to showcase online debatesfor students in AP Government class. Each week a new topic is debated bytwo teams. The topics are intended to be both currently relevant and tie-inwith the AP curriculum. Topics covered thus far have included: “Don’t ask, don’t tell,” Electoral College, and bipartisanship at the federal level. According to Mr. Salerno, “The blog has been a great way to allow students

to explore topics critical to the AP curriculum and without detracting from class time.” The reaction from the students has been verypositive and the debates have been spirited. What started as an experiment has become an integral part of the class.

Although the air temperature was in the low 30’s and the water temperature was in the low 40’s, it didn’t stop the group from makingthe plunge!

Since Special Olympic athletes are never charged to participate, events like Polar Plunge are essential for financing, training and competition. For several months, Iona Prep students raised money for the athletes of Special OlympicsNew York by asking their family, friends and classmates to support their efforts. The Iona Prep students who tookpart in the Polar Plunge helped raise over $7,000,which was the second highest total among all theteams. Polar Plunge was definitely proof that coldwater warms the heart. Faculty member, PatriciaGray is the moderator.

1916 SocietyCreate Your Legacy Today

With the devoted support of parents and local clergy, the three founding Brothers of Iona rentedthe old Stern Estate and opened the Iona School in 1916 with thirty-seven students. Almost 100years later, it is that same support that makes Iona Prep such a special place. Iona Prep’s nine decadesof graduating classes are essential in fostering the tradition and legacy of Iona Prep.

Over the years, alumni such as William V. Fitzpatrick ’53 have become instrumental in advancingthis tradition. Bill Fitzpatrick is a proud member of the 1916 Society, which recognizes people whoestablish a life income gift at the Prep or include Iona Prep in their estate plan. Mr. Fitzpatrick acknowledges the importance of

Iona Prep and credits the institution for his development. Now Mr. Fitzpatrick wants to help IonaPrep develop its future students. “The gift is really from my brothers Tom ’50 (D) and John ’51 andmyself. The scholarship will be named in memory of our parents, Mr. & Mrs. Thomas F Fitzpatrick. Our parents worked very hard to send us to Iona. It is important thatwe remember them as the reason we received the fine education thatwe did. Their devotion to a good Catholic education, and what itmeant to my brothers and I, will live on in this scholarship.”

Dear Members of the Iona Prep Community,

Iona Prep has always been about family and tradition. From the days when I attended the Prep with my two brothers to today as my three sons enjoy the giftof an Iona Prep education, the traditions of Iona Prep continue. Earlier thisschool year, I had the honor of being named Chairman of the Board of Directorsof Iona Preparatory School. In that capacity and as an active parent, I am ableto see firsthand the workings of the Prep, and I am pleased to report that IonaPrep is stronger than ever.

This year, we were pleased to welcome Bro. Thomas Leto as our president. After 11 successful years as president of Bishop Hendricken High School inRhode Island, Bro. Leto came to us as an experienced and effective leader. Bro. Leto lives in the spirit of Blessed Edmund Rice every day and is dedicated to developing our young men in mind, body, and soul. In addition to Bro. Leto, we continue to be blessed with ahighly qualified and dedicated faculty and staff that go beyond the basics of academic instruction and teach our boysto become outstanding Catholic gentlemen. Our boys graduate ready to handle the demands of college and the challenges of an ever-changing world.

The tradition of excellence continues at Iona Prep. While I am sure you have heard of our recent successes on theplaying fields including championships in soccer, track, baseball, lacrosse, golf and rowing, what you may not haveheard is that we have more National Merit Finalists, Semi Finalists and Commended Students than any other thanany other Catholic prep school in the Bronx & Westchester; or that more than half our seniors are takingAP courses. Our tradition of achievement continues as several of our seniors have already been accepted to the prestigious U.S.Naval Academy in Annapolis, as well as recent acceptances to Harvard, Yale, MIT, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown,Notre Dame, Holy Cross and several other top colleges.

The tradition of service to others continues as with a four year service requirement which has resulted in over 18,000hours of community service being performed for organizations such as Midnight Run, Habitat for Humanity, the HopeSoup Kitchen, and dozens of other charitable organizations.

On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I want thank you for your continued support of the mission of IonaPrep. While other institutions of Catholic education have struggled in recent years, Iona Prep has become strongerby continuing our traditions of the pursuit of excellence in all endeavors and service to others in the spirit of BlessedEdmund Rice. Thank you for being a part of our Iona family.

Sincerely,

John A. Verni ’80Board of Directors

Remembering Vincent FlynnOne of the many things that make Iona Prep so specialis its faculty members. Many of these faculty members have devoted decades of service toIona Prep. Vincent Flynn’s tenure at the Prep lasted almost four decades, between 1944and 1982. He began as a Latin and English teacher and served as vice principal during thelast 15 years of his tenure under Br. H. Michael Delaney and Br. James Liguori. Br. Liguorisaid, “Vincent was an extraordinary man who gave his whole adult life to the bettermentof Iona Prep.” Astonishingly, Mr. Flynn worked at three campuses in his 38 years at IonaPrep: Doorely Hall, Hagan Hall and the current campus on Wilmot Road. Vincent passedaway peacefully on January 21, 2011 at St. Camillus Nursing Home in Stamford, CT. Vincent was born in 1917 and in 1940 he married Kathryn O’Brien, who predeceased himin February 1994.
