nGenius Performance Manager is an enterprise class software solution that monitors the performance of networks and applications running throughout the global infrastructure.

nGenius Performance Manager collects data from nGenius InfiniStream Appliances, nGenius probes, routers, switches, and other flow-based information sources, such as NetFlow, to monitor applications and provide a complete picture of all factors contributing to network performance. The nGenius® Performance Manager provides comprehensive, end-to-end understanding of application and service delivery across the network infrastructure, assuring a high performance service delivery environment. Providing a granular understanding of how users access key business applications and services needed to meet business objectives, the nGenius Performance Manager allows Enterprise IT organizations to build an optimized and efficient network infrastructure to run at peak efficiency and deliver a consistent high quality end-user experience. A distributed environment consists of nGenius Servers organized in a cluster that includes one Global Manager managing one or more Local Servers. A cluster can include many Local Servers, but only one Global Manager. The distributed environment can also include Standby Servers and NewsStand Servers. Users assigned System or Network Administrator privileges can add servers to a distributed cluster.

Performance Manager Components

Console Workspaces – The Performance Manager Console, is organized into workspaces that allow you to track multiple network and application statistics. By creating workspaces, you can organize views according to a logic that meets your needs. For example, you can organize workspaces by location, monitored element (data source), or troubleshooting issue.

Device and Server Management – Device Management provides an easy-to-use interface that allows you to configure protocols and manage monitored elements (data sources) deployed in your network. Server Management also provides an easy-to-use interface that allows you to manage either a standalone nGenius Server (i.e., user accounts) or all nGenius Servers included in a distributed environment.

Report Administrator – Provides reporting tools to assist you in sharing information with others. Using the Report Administrator, you can create many different types of reports and optionally combine multiple reports into NewsPapers (a NewsPaper is a collection of reports).

Using the nGenius Unified Management Console

The nGenius Unified Management Console provides single sign-on and a

centralized launch point for nGenius Service Delivery Manager, HomeSpace,

and Link Search, and certain features of nGenius Performance Manager. This

console functions as desktop for accessing, launching, and switching between

supported tasks. The information in this section provides a quick introduction to

the following components of the nGenius Unified Management Console.

Overview of Performance Manager as an Application

Install the nGenius Performance Manager Client software and use it as a standalone application to access nGenius Performance Manager.

You can install more than one nGenius Client on the same machine. Multiple nGenius Clients allow you to connect to different versions of the nGenius Server (for example, if you are running one server with a permanent license and another with an evaluation license.)

Note: The nGenius Server and nGenius Client must run at the same version. If, for example, you apply a service pack to the nGenius Server, a mismatch can occur.

The first time you launch the server using the nGenius Client, the system detects any mismatch between the two and offers to synchronize the versions. When you synchronize versions, you do not need to reinstall the nGenius Client.

You can establish secure communications between nGenius Clients and browsers and the nGenius Server, or between browsers and Remote NewsStands. When you configure secure connections, HTTP traffic runs over HTTPS and RMI traffic is encrypted using SSL.

nGenius Client

The nGenius Client is a standalone Java application. It provides the same set of functionality that is provided by the applet-based client. Like its applet-based counterpart, it works with a web browser that displays the splash page (Standard login). The user will perform login on the splash page, exactly the same way as he/she does using an applet-based client.

Server – This combination of an editable field and a drop-down list allows the user to select a server to connect to. The user can select a server from the drop-down list or enter a new server name or IP address.

Port – This combination of an editable field and a drop-down list allows the user to specify the HTTP port for the server selected. The user can select a port from the drop-down list or enter a port number.

Direct Login – Allows the user to bypass the Home page and directly access the nGenius Console (Workspaces) or the nGenius Server (Server Administration). Requires a Username and password.

Connect/Disconnect – When the user clicks on this button, the nGenius Client will try to connect to the server that the user has specified. A browser window will be launched by the program and the splash page will be displayed. User will perform login from the splash page. The text on the button will change to “Disconnect”. To disconnect from the server, the user clicks on this button again (new labeled as “Disconnect”).

Close – This button allows the user to terminate the program at any time.

Help – Clicking on this button will display this help page in a new browser window.

When you select Console Workspaces in nGenius Performance Manager, the Navigation tree displays, by default, in the left pane of the Performance Manager Console. The Navigation tree organizes the display of monitored elements in the Console so that you can select te monitored elements that you want to include in views you launch in Workspaces.

From the Performance Manager Console, you can:

• Monitor and view network traffic.

• Use workspaces to organize data views.

• Monitor voice and video traffic and compare it to overall IP traffic to determine how VoIP-based traffic is impacting your network.

• Collect, track, and analyze response time data.

• Monitor Key Performance Indicator (KPI) data. KPIs provide values that can be used to derive the state of an application across all interfaces and servers on your network.

• Perform packet analysis and decoding procedures to isolate and troubleshoot faults in the network.

• View threshold-based device or KPI alarms in the Alarm Viewer.

• Launch Data Source Health views to obtain specific information about the devices on which all network monitoring views are based.

• Select an icon to switch to another nGenius Performance Manager module.

• To quickly switch from the Performance Manager Console to another module (for example, to switch to Server Management on the nGenius Server), click the appropriate icon in the lower-right corner of the Console. (When you place the cursor on an icon, a tool tip identifies the module. The Performance Manager Console is identified as Console Workspaces.)

Console Workspaces Overview

The Console views enable you to monitor and view network traffic. Structured browsing paths to views start with a top-level view from which you can drill down to other views and refined details.

The Console views summarize all traffic retrieved from your network in easy-to-read charts and tables. Each view gives you information that helps you to understand the behavior of your network.

Top-level Views and Functions Overview

When you select one or more monitored elements from the Navigation tree and right-click, the resulting menu displays the top-level selections applicable to your selection. Top-level views display general information from which you can drill down through structured browsing paths for more detailed information.

Drilldown Views and Functions Overview

After you have launched a top-level view, you can obtain more specific information about host, conversation, or application traffic for a specific segment, switch port, or trunk link by launching a drilldown view from the active top-level view. Depending on the top-level view you have launched, you may also be able to launch certain functions from the view, including, with the appropriate configuration, accessing the Sniffer Intelligence Console.

Snapshot Views

Snapshot views reflect an average selected metric over a given time period. For example if the Link Usage Snapshot view is selected and the time chosen is the last six hours the view will display the Average link utilization for the past six hours.

Over Time View

Over Time views reflect a timeline for the selected metric. The time line display is reliant on selected timeframe and refresh rate.

Drill down time context for Over Time views (Duration-based versus Point-based drill down)

In Over Time chart views, when you drill down to another view, by default the drilldown view is based on the duration of the parent view (duration-based drill down). You can optionally click a button to toggle to a point-based drilldown format before selecting the drilldown view. The point-based option enables you to select a specific time period for the drilldown view.

Note: When you do a duration-based drill down, you can think of it as, "What you see is what you get." If you drill down from a parent view that is displayed with its default duration, the drilldown view is displayed with the same default duration. If you have zoomed in on the parent view to display a portion of the default duration, and then do a duration-based drill down from the zoomed-in view, the drilldown view is displayed with the same duration as the zoomed-in (parent) view.
