V7 Year 4-12 FAQ: iPad BYOD Programme 1. Are parents paying for the iPad? Yes. This programme is a fully funded parent model. Parents may purchase an iPad through Winthrop’s online store and take advantage of the prices and conditions that the School has secured for the JSR parent community. However, as long as the device meets the School’s minimum specifications, it can be purchased privately anywhere. Parents are encouraged to ‘shop around’ to secure a purchase arrangement that best suits their circumstances. 2. Does it need to be an iPad? Can my child use a laptop instead? All primary and middle School students (Year 4-9) must be using an iPad. Senior Secondary Students (Year 10-12) have the option of continuing to use their iPad or can opt to use a laptop. Students making this decision will need to pick up a BYOD form from the ICT Helpdesk and get this signed by a Parent or Guardian before their device is permitted to connect to the School network. Parents of Senior Secondary student are encouraged to read the “Additional Laptop Information for Year 10-12” found on the iPad and Laptop BYOD page of the School’s Website. 3. Why can’t my child use a laptop in the Primary or Middle School? All Primary and Middle School teaching and learning programmes are geared towards using this device. The School purchases Apps for students to use and it is important that all students have a similar experience in accessing and producing content on their devices. As the learning needs of the students change in Years 10- 12 and the digital ecosystem in which they work have developed, we recognize that increasingly more and more students find a Laptop to be a preferable device to meet their differing learning needs in the Senior Year levels. 4. What happens if my child has an iPad already? There is an option for students to use their currently owned iPad as long as it meets the recommended minimum requirements. Please remember that the Acceptable Use Policy will be applied to all devices used at the School. 5. What are the ‘recommended’ and ‘minimum” specifications for the iPad? The iPad preferred is the new 9.7-inch model with 32GB of storage capacity and Wi-Fi connectivity. Earlier generation models, which may already be owned by some families, are an acceptable alternative, such as iPad Air or iPad Air 2 as long as it is a model capable of running the latest version of iOS. Currently this is iOS 11.4.3. An iPad Gen 1, 2, 3 and 4 or iPad Mini are deemed unsuitable as they are unable to run this version of the operating system. 6. What are the options for purchasing an iPad? The following options are available to parents: a) Purchase an iPad from a retail outlet of your choice (please note the minimum specifications required) b) Place an order through the School by using the Winthrop portal(https://portal.winaust.com.au/a/jsr). The optional items available for purchase include: Protective Cover (highly recommended) Extended Apple Care Warranty (12 to 24 months) Insurance (parents are advised to check with their home contents insurer) 7. What are the options for purchasing a laptop? This is an option for students in Year 10-12 only. Parents of these students are encouraged to read the “Additional Laptop Information for Year 10-12” found on the iPad and Laptop BYOD page of the School’s Website. 8. If I place an order through the School for an iPad, when/how will I be required to pay? The payment options are: 1. At the time of placing your order via the online portal and pay in full by providing your direct debit or credit card details; or 2. Select either the 12 or 24 monthly instalment option on the portal and the School will forward an agreement for you to sign. Note that nominal charges apply to the payment instalment option. 9. Can I buy the laptop through the School? No. There is a very broad range of laptops on the market. Parents are free to seek the best deal for their purchase. Recommendations on laptop specifications can be found on the iPad and Laptop BYOD page of the School’s Website.

Year 4-12 FAQ: iPad BYOD Programme1.

10. If I place an order through the School, when will I be able to pick up my iPad? Orders will be processed by Winthrop immediately. iPads Paid for in Full will be delivered to the home address. iPads ordered under payment terms will be delivered to the School and can be picked up from the ICT Centre following an email from the School.

11. Will parents have to pay for the device if it is damaged, lost or stolen? Yes. We will be educating the students about being active and mature digital citizens and we welcome the parents’ support in this endeavour by ensuring that students are being responsible users at home. Ultimately, it is the parents’ responsibility and the iPad should either be covered through your personal household insurance, the optional insurance extended by Winthrop as well as the AppleCare warranty you may choose to purchase for the device.

12. Will parents be required to buy accessories? iPads come with a standard cable and power adapter. The purchase of any additional accessories is at the discretion of parents, but the School strongly recommends purchasing a protective cover or case.

13. Will parents be required to pay for apps required for school use from the Apple App Store? No. Parents will not be required to purchase any apps from the App Store. Any educationally useful apps that have been identified for school use will be available to the students to download via the JSR App Catalog at no cost. Students and parents are free to purchase and install any additional age-appropriate apps of their choosing.

14. If I purchase an iPad privately or opt to use an already owned device, when will the students be required to have the device? Students should have the device setup and ready to use on the first day of the School term.

15. Will students need an Apple ID? Yes. All students will be required to have an Apple ID. If students have an existing Apple ID, this may be used instead of creating another account. Students under the age of 13 will need to have their Apple IDs set up and managed by their parents.

16. Will my child need to have my credit card details to register for an Apple ID account? No. An Apple ID account can be setup without the need of a Credit Card. All students will be required to have and use their own Apple ID on the device as this will be needed to receive and install the School apps to the iPad. An Apple ID will also allow free Apps to be downloaded. Priced Apps can be purchased through the App Store by using iTunes Cards available at major retail stores, supermarkets and numerous other outlets.

17. Will students need to setup an email account? Yes. All students will be required to have an email account. This forms the base of the AppleID login and will be needed to download any School Apps from the AppStore. Part of the process of setting up the iPad, will give parents and students an option to create an iCloud based email account.

18. Will students be able to put music on the devices? Yes. Students are able to place their own purchased music onto their device.

19. Are students allowed to install games on the iPad? Yes, but this is up to the parent to decide. The device can be personalised by the students. However, both the content and use are subject to the Acceptable Code of Conduct agreement. As part of good practice, parents should always preview and monitor games for their children.

20. Is it possible that my son/daughter can have their iPad confiscated? Yes. Both school staff and parents have the right to confiscate the device for a period of time if it is misused. The School recognises that this may have detrimental effect on the student’s education, but students need to recognise the importance of adhering to the Code of Conduct and the ICT Acceptable use policies and be prepared for the consequences of breaking these. If the iPad is confiscated at home and the students cannot bring it to school, then parents should advise the School immediately.

21. Will my child’s Internet use be monitored at school? Yes. The school has a Wi-Fi connection that will filter students Internet use in line with the School Internet Policy. The School also uses a monitoring system that tracks all attempts at both appropriate and inappropriate Internet use.

22. Do students need a 3/4G Micro Sim for use at school? No. The recommended model is Wi-Fi only and will provide Internet connectivity when the device is at school.

23. What happens if my son/daughter uses their 3/4G connection at school? Students using a 3G connection at the school are still subject to the Schools ICT Acceptable Use and iPad Code of Conduct policies. Concerned parents can choose not to provide a micro sim to students. Students who have an iPad with a 3/4G (cellular model) capability must not bring their Sim cards to School.

24. What happens if the iPad just stops working? For those devices purchased through Winthrop Australia, the School will handle warranty claims with the assistance of Winthrop Australia. We strongly recommend insurance to all parents. We advise you to contact your Insurance Company to determine whether the iPad is covered under your existing policy. Winthrop Australia is offering an insurance option, which can be ordered via the on-line portal. We urge parents to consider your insurance options carefully.

25. Is there an agreement I need to be aware of before my son/ daughter can use the iPad at the School? Yes. As part of the programme, all students agree to follow all School rules and the iPad Code of Conduct governing its use. A copy of this document can be found on SEQTA.

26. Will the iPad add weight to the students’ bags? The device weighs around 650 grams + case and will add minimal weight to student bags.

27. Will my son/daughter still need their books? Yes. Whilst this is constantly reviewed, there are no suitable substitutes for ALL current text books that are in use. The School is evaluating digital versions of available text books and departmental decisions are being made about the broader use of these moving forward. Some novels are available from iTunes and students can opt to use these at their discretion.

28. Will my son/daughter stop handwriting? No. The iPad will act as a tool for consuming and using information from the Internet, the School Network, Learning Portals, or apps from the App Store. Students

will continue to have formal handwriting lessons and assignments in the Primary years of schooling.

29. Have teachers’ skills been updated to provide content to this new device? All teachers at JSRACS have been provided with an iPad. As part of an ongoing professional development strategy, teachers are being trained in the application of these devices to their learning programs.

30. Will my son/daughter still use a computer? Yes. Whilst the iPad is an excellent general-purpose device, it is not a total replacement for a computer. The School will maintain banks of laptops and computer labs for student use.

31. Are students permitted to ‘jailbreak’ their iPad? Whilst personalising the device by students is acceptable, the School strictly enforces copyright regulations. Any student found ‘jail breaking’ will lose their privilege of access to the device at school. (iOS jailbreaking is the process of removing the limitations on Apple devices through the use of software and hardware exploits. Jailbreaking permits root access to the iOS operating system, allowing the download of additional applications, extensions, and themes that are unavailable through the official Apple App Store.)

32. Will students be able to Facebook from the iPad? No, not while they are at school. The School’s ICT policy currently does not allow students to access Social Networking sites. iPads that have been connected to home Wi-Fi connections will have the same level of access as the home computers.

33. Will the battery last all day at school? The battery life is approximately 10 hours with the iPad device. Students will need to manage their battery life in much the same way as they do their mobile phones - i.e. the iPad will need to be charged every night. The School will not provide any charging facilities other than a power point during the day.

34. Who do we contact at the School if we are concerned about iPad usage? If the concern is in relation to use, the class teacher should be the first point of contact. Issues surrounding Pastoral Care should be directed to the class teacher in the first instance or then to the relevant Head of Department or Assistant Principal.
