Vocabulary Scavenger Hunt & Slideshowby Jim Holland, Arlington ISD

Overview: Students are given a mix of cards with each card containing a term, definition, or image.

Students must first exchange cards with one another until they have all 18 cards in the set (the Lite

version of Slideshow Builder caps the number of images that can be used at 20. If using the full version

of the app, there is no limit). They then sequence the cards (term then definition then image)for each

vocabulary term. Students then build a slideshow of the sequenced cards (music optional).

Apps Used:

Bump (free), can also use Mover Lite

Slideshow Builder Lite (free)

Virtual Dice (free, optional for activity)

Preparation:

1.  All student and teacher iPods must have Bump and Slideshow Builder Lite installed.

2.  Teacher creates the term and definition cards as PowerPoint slides then saves them as JPGimages. Images to match the terms are saved to the teacher’s computer. These images are then

synced to the teacher’s iPod.

3.  Create a corresponding answer sheet.

Procedure:

Part One: Collecting Cards

1.  Divide students into groups of 4-5.

2.  Teacher selects the carriers who will distribute the starting cards to other students. There

should be 1 carrier per group. Optional: have students roll dice on their iPods (suggested free

app: Virtual Dice) where the highest number in the group becomes the carrier.3.  Distribute 3-4 random cards to each carrier, being sure to put all the cards into play. While there

may be some overlap, try distributing the cards so that each carrier has a unique mix of cards.

4.  Give carriers enough time to “bump” the cards to their group members using the Bump app.

This should take no more than two minutes.

5.  Explain the activity to students:

•  the object of this activity is to acquire 18 cards with no duplicates

•  you will need to collect six vocabulary term cards, each having a definition card and

image card to match

•  each of the six terms should have three cards that correspond for a total of 18

•  you will be given 45 seconds to meet with a partner outside each group

•  in the 45 second time, you may each share two cards

•  I will announce when time is up and you will move on to another partner and repeat the

process until you have either collected all the cards or time has been called

•  you may discuss the content of the cards with your partner if you are unsure of which

term, definition, and image belong together

6.  Start the countdown timer and direct students to meet with partners. Monitor the allowed time

based on any technical difficulties.

7.  When all but a few students have completed their collection, direct students to return to their

groups. Any missing cards can be shared within the groups.

Part Two: Building the Slideshow

1.  Students will now build their slideshows by placing the cards in sequence (write the sequence so

all can see: term, definition, image).

2.  Instruct students to start Slideshow Builder and create a new show (“+” button).

3.  Guide students in naming the show with an appropriate title then click “Done.”

4.  Show students how to add images by tapping the “+” button.

5.  Remind students that the images that were “moved” to them by other students will be in the

Saved Photos album.

6.  Instruct students to click on the sequence of three cards/images in the correct order and then

press the Done button.

7.  Review the slides in the slideshow preview window. If a slide does not belong or is out of order,

delete the images (right-slide) and add them again.

8.  Repeat the process until all 18 images are in order.

9.  Students may preview their slideshows by pressing the play button (hint: turn iPod landscape for

widescreen).

10. Allow students time to make adjustments as needed. Music can be added during this time if the

network settings allow (see instructions on the Slideshow Builder app screen).

Part Three: Peer Checking

1.  Distribute the answer sheets to each group.

2.  One by one, allow students to play their slideshows for their groups while the group uses the

answer sheet to check the order of the cards. Option: instead of playing back the slideshow for

the group, allow students to use their slideshows to complete a quiz!

Mystery Draw (aka Pictionary)by Jim Holland, Arlington ISD

Overview: Students are divided into groups, with each student having an iPod (or alternately one iPodfor each group). The teacher “beams” a word to the drawer. The drawer then draws a sketch to describe

the word/concept. The other members of the group write down their guess on their own iPod doodle

page. At the end of the time limit, all group members reveal their answers.

Apps Used:

Fliq Notes (free)

iDoodleIt (free)

Virtual Dice (free, optional for determining who draws next)

Preparation:1.  All student and teacher iPods must have Fliq Notes and iDoodleIt installed.

2.  Teacher creates the terms on his/her own iPod using the Fliq Notes App.

Procedure:

1.  Divide students into groups of 4-5.

2.  Teacher selects the drawers for the first round. Optional: have students roll dice on their iPods

(suggested free app: Virtual Dice) where the highest number in the group becomes the carrier.

3.  The drawers stand and start Fliq Notes so the teacher knows who should receive the word via

Fliq Notes.

4.  All other students lay their iPods flat on the table/desk with the iDoodleIt app open and cleared.

5.  The teacher sends the word to the drawers via Fliq Notes.

6.  The drawers start the iDoodleIt app.

7.  On the teacher’s signal, the drawers begin sketching the word/concept as the countdown timer

begins. The drawers may not communicate with group members except through the iDoodleIt

page.

8.  When a group member thinks they know the word, they write the word on their own iDoodleIt

page and wait for time to end.

9.  When time ends, all group members reveal their answers.

10. The drawer then has one minute to explain the concept and the reason they drew what they

did.

11. The next drawer is selected and play continues.

Touchcards Reviewby Jim Holland, Arlington ISD

Overview: Students review a set of online review cards using the iPod Touch.

Apps Used:

Touchcards (free)

Preparation:

1.  All student iPods must have Touchcards installed.

2.  Teacher creates account at Quizlet.com.

3.  Teacher creates a set of cards at Quizlet (with or without images).

4.  Make note of the number in the URL of the card set.

5.  Display this number for students to see.

Procedure:

1.  Students open the Touchcards app.

2.  Delete the current deck (if any). The free version of this app will allow only one deck to be

loaded at a time.

3.  Tap the import button at the bottom of the screen.

4.  Select Quizlet from the top menu

5.  Enter the number from the Quizlet URL then tap Import flash cards.

6.  Tap the Decks button at the bottom.

7.  Tap the name of the newly imported deck.

8.  Tap “review this set” to begin to begin studying the terms

Study Round 1: Read It

Instruct students to silently read the term then tap the card to flip it. Students then read the

definition or description silently, then advance to the next card with a left slide.

Study Round 2: Verbalize It

Instruct students to quietly read the term out loud then say the definition before tapping the card to

flip it. Students then check their response against the written definition/description. Students then

advance to the next card with a left slide.

Study Round 3: Peer ChallengeStudents pair up for this stage. Student 1 selects any card and flips to the definition/description.

Student 2 read the definition/description then says the term out loud. Student 1 flips the card to

verify. The students alternate and continue to take turns.

Challenge Round: Head to Head Dual

Without looking at the cards (holding the iPod under the desk), student 1 slides and/or taps the deck

of cards several times to bring up a random term or definition. Student 1 then lays the iPod between

he and his partner. The first one to verbalize what is on the flip side of the card wins.
