Characterization of coatings is essential to determining and maintaining coating quality. This includes characterization of the coating in both its liquid state (e.g., rheology, wetting, flatness) and solid state (e.g., stress, microstructure, adhesion, roughness). Many advances in this area have been made over the past decade, but many needs remain. The purpose of this workshop is to highlight industrial needs for characterization of coatings along with associated opportunities for fundamental research. Such opportunities may arise from long-standing problems as well as emerging areas. Contributions that discuss practical industrial challenges and needs are especially welcome.

While the vast majority of implanted polymeric materials are based on synthetic polymers, there is a growing literature in which biopolymers such as proteins, polyamino acids, and polysaccharides as implantable materials are being investigated as alternatives. These biopolymers can be implanted alone or as hybrids with synthetic materials. The biopolymers may enhance bioavailability, and can also exhibit superior mechanical properties. This workshop will feature advances in the use of proteins based on silk and elastin, crosslinked glycosaminoglycan hydrogels, and adhesive proteins, as implantable biomaterials.

Organic electronic devices have already received wide commercialization in portable displays, with increasing application in solid-state lighting and large display formats. Applications in solar photoconversion continue to emerge with increases in device performance and materials processing. This workshop will examine the further commercialization of organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) in both conventional and flexible displays, as well as efforts to exploit organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) for window and building integrated applications.

"Imagine Heart Valves that Grow and Don't Wear Out"
We have developed a novel tissue-engineered tube of cell-produced collagenous matrix, which is allogeneic upon a decellularization performed prior to implantation and thus “off-the-shelf.” It is grown from dermal fibroblasts entrapped in a sacrificial fibrin hydrogel tube that is then decellularized using sequential detergent treatments. The resulting cell- produced matrix tube possesses physiological strength, compliance, and alignment (circumferential). Using the concept of a tubular heart valve, where the tube collapses inward with back-pressure between 3 equi-spaced constraints placed around the periphery to create one-way valve action, we have created a set of novel heart valves for adults and children that offer indefinite durability and growth potential because the matrix becomes a living tissue with the recipient’s cells post- implantation.
