Photonics is a branch of Physics which began with the invention of the laser in 1960

followed by the fabrication of the laser diode in the 1970s and optical fibers for transmitting

information. These inventions formed the basis for the telecommunications revolution of the

late 20th century and provided the infrastructure for the Internet. Currently Photonics covers

a huge range of science and technology applications, including laser manufacturing,

biological and chemical sensing, medical diagnostics, display technology and optical

computing.

There were seven technical sessions scheduled for two days

Session 1: ‘Growth and Evolution Of Photonics’ By Prof. V.P.N Nampoori,

Emeritus Professor, International School of Photonics, CUSAT.
