Iran is blocking the peace efforts in Yemen by

providing weapons to Houthi rebels through smuggling, Saudi Arabia said yesterday.

Speaking at a summit of foreign ministers and military officials from Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Morocco and Yemen, the Saudi foreign minister Adel Al Jubeir said Tehran was the “greatest sponsor” of the rebels and forces loyal to former Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

“Iran is destroying all attempts to find a solution in Yemen, which has led

to the failure of all political negotiations between the government and these militias,” Al Jubeir said at the summit held in Riyadh.

“These militias would not have continued operations without the support of the

greatest sponsor of terrorism in the world — the Iranian regime,” he said. Al Jubeir said the actions of the Houthi rebels and Saleh forces had “imposed military action”. “When we talk about Yemen and our alliance to support the

legitimate [government], we have to remember the war of the Houthi and Saleh militias on the stability of the country, their kidnapping of it, the crimes they have committed against the Yemeni people, their offensive on Yemen’s neighbouring countries — including Saudi Arabia and the UAE — and their continuous threats against the stability of the region,” he said.

“This behaviour has kidnapped the will of the people and imposed military action after continues violations and assaults that have not yet stopped.”

Al Jubeir said the rebels’ actions had robbed more than four million children of an education and childhood, adding that they have recruited more than 1,000 minors to their ranks.

“We are facing militias that have ruined childhoods and caused poverty, hunger and sickness,” he said, adding: “They have targeted cities and civilians, destroyed homes and planted landmines that have resulted in the painful loss of lives. Police have arrested a man for beating his

wife unconscious near a shopping mall in Muharraq Governorate.

The victim was punched twice in the face a few metres away from Dragon City mall in Diyar Al Muharraq, leaving her unconscious in her car, before she was rushed to the hospital by ambulance.

The victim’s lawyer, Ebtissam Al Sabbagh, confirmed to DT News yesterday that the incident took place on Thursday while the victim was driving out from the mall.

“She filed a complaint at Samaheej Police Station and the husband was shortly arrested,” Al Sabbagh said.

The attorney also informed that the couple have some issues and are involved in a legal dispute before the court.

However, Al Sabbagh couldn’t reveal further information on the nature of the legal case between the couple, but added that “they have one baby together that is only few months old”.

“She told the cops that she noticed her husband was following her while she was driving away out of the mall. She stopped on the side of the road and he approached her. A heated argument erupted between the two, as the man accused her of lying in the court. The discussion ended with the man attacking his wife,” the lawyer said, adding that the husband has been interrogated by the Public Prosecution yesterday.

According to her version

at the police station, the unconscious victim was woken up by passers-by 10 minutes after the incident took place.

She was taken to King Hamad University Hospital by ambulance. A non-Bahraini eyewitness supported the woman’s claims at the police station.

This is the third case of husbands beating their wives that surfaced in Bahrain within the past two months, raising more concerns over the increasing domestic violence issue and the victims who haven’t spoken up about their agony yet.

DT News reported recently that a Bahraini man was sentenced by the criminal court to one year of imprisonment for brutally attacking his Syrian ex-wife.

The 32-year-old woman was diagnosed with concussion, hemorrhage and severe bruises and inflammations on the face and other parts of her body.

She was hospitalised for at least two weeks by the middle of September. Labour and Social Development Ministry has provided the woman and her five children a temporary shelter at Dar Al Aman Home for Domestic Violence Victims.

Few weeks later, particularly on October 13, another man was arrested by Muharraq Police Station for assaulting his ex-wife and damaging her car. In a similar scenario to Thursday’s incident, the man stopped his ex-wife in the middle of the road, physically assaulted and rammed into her car.

The Public Prosecution initiated its investigations into the case and accused the man of assault and damaging private property.

Agraduate of the Arabian Gulf University (AGU),

Neurosurgery Consultant Dr Ahmed Abdul Hadi Al Jishi, has implanted 50 devices for paralytic patients in a series of successful operations to reduce muscular spasms.

Dr Al Jishi, who graduated from AGU’s College of Medicine and Medical Sciences in 2003, attracted the attention of foreign and Arab media after he successfullly developed a treatment for a Canadian patient. The patient suffered from paralysis due to a spinal cord injury, in addition to ankylosing spondylitis (AS) disease, a form of arthritis, which prevented proper surgical intervention. Al Jishi implanted a device comprised of an electronic pump under the patient’s skin to deliver the drug Baclofen to nerve cells through a tube connecting

to spinal fluid, to alleviate muscular spasms.

Dr Al Jishi said: “The device mechanism works efficiently following the implantation of an electronic pump under the skin to deliver the required drug to nerve cells. This reduces muscle spasms and allows the doctor control of

the drug dosage. The Canadian patient, who was a quadriplegic suffering from a spinal cord injury and AS disease, received treatment at the Hamilton Heath Sciences Centre, Canada, significantly altering his life. He has now become able to perform simple daily tasks more independently, not to mention being rid of the chronic pain that was caused by his muscle spasms.”

This achievement is a qualitative precedent, due to the scant number of surgeons who perform this procedure in the world, especially in desperate cases. Al Jishi, explained: “Although the drug Baclofen is ingested orally, high doses are required to reach the nervous system, which leads to several side effects. The current device delivers the drug to the nervous system directly, in lesser doses and with negligible side effects, allowing the doctor control of the dosage as necessary.

The Catalonia Crisis is just one of the many news-stories that make us wonder; if separation is indeed a solution to political

problems of some nations. The pronouncement of independence from Spain, on Friday

27 October, is not receiving the response the Catalonian Regional Parliament had expected, from other key actors on Europe’s political stage. And the region has plunged into an unprecedented crisis.

The European Union had said that it will not recognize Catalonia; and that no EU state will recognize it. It had always been calling the Catalonian problem an internal matter of Spain, and that the constitutional monarchy must solve it within the nation.

But, according to some Finnish MPs, it looks like Finland might recognize Catalonia. Croatia, however, declared that it is completely against Catalonian independence.

So, this crisis is capable of creating slow and small cracks in the EU. And EU, we know, is already hugely dented by the debacle of Brexit.

The political storm over the separation of this autonomous region of Catalonia, within the Spanish nation, has been raging for many months now.

And Friday’s motion, passed in the regional parliament of Catalonia - in its capital city Barcelona - said that Catalonia now constituted an independent, sovereign and social democratic state. And it called on other countries and institutions to recognise it.

The independence motion was passed in the 135-strong Catalonian Assembly, with 70 votes in favour, 10 against and 2 blank ballots.

The Catalonian pro-separatist leaders justify their declaration of independence saying 90 per cent of the 2.26 million who voted in the October 1 referendum chose Yes (for independence), with a turnout at 43 per cent of the electorate. And this voting does not even include ballots confiscated by Spanish police in violent raids across the region.

Though Friday’s motion was boycotted by some opposition parties, the majority vote in the Catalonian Parliament, was enough to spark jubilant celebrations across the region.

So, within hours after Friday’s declaration of independence, the Spanish Prime Minister called the declaration of independence a mockery of democracy, and a celebration of a completely illegal referendum.

And Spain’s central government swung into action aggressively. It fired Catalonia’s separatist leaders, dissolved its parliament,

and called for new elections in December. Its Economy Ministry increased control over regional finances,

to block the use of state funds to organise the secession bid, and it started paying directly for essential services.

And, very interestingly, on Sunday 29 October, as I am writing this, I am also watching a video of a huge pro-Spain rally, in Barcelona.

Thousands of people are saying they wish to be in Spain, and that not all Catalonia wants independence!

This divide is huge, and it is a major setback to pro-independence leaders who have been fighting for separation.

Furthermore, we must note that even if Catalonian Independence is successful, the seeming success of Catalonia can cause an unwanted domino effect.

For instance, it could give the Basque Country – another region within Spain - a motivation to recommence its own fight for independence from the Spanish central government. A new generation of young Basques who feel ignored by Madrid could start a fresh wave of protests. And such movements can destabilise the region.

Separation of a region, from an already established nation - however strong the region feels it is - may not always be a sound decision.

Separating from a large nation can easily diminish the separated region’s internal resources. And when other neighbouring countries are not supporting the separated region, it would cause more problems.

From far away, we can only wait and watch the separation. And if it really is a solution.

Catalonia: Is Separation a Solution?

A Bahraini national has been arrested in India for

marrying a minor, according to reports published in Indian media.

“The city police late on Saturday night reportedly picked up a foreign national on charge of marrying a minor girl from the city. According to the police, the man, reportedly a Bahrain national, had come to the city last week and married the minor from Talabkatta in the Old City,” Indian daily Deccan Chronicle reported yesterday.

questioning”.“The police said that

they had found a marriage certificate in possession of the Bahraini man along with a passport and few thousand Indian currency notes,” the report mentioned adding that police are working to identify the judge who solemnised the marriage”.

This comes amidst a scandal that shook the community after detecting a ring that arranges marriages of minor girls to men, mostly of GCC nationalities.

General Secretary Xi Jinping’s report on the 19th National

Congress of the Communist Party of China made a top-level design for China’s diplomacy in the new era and made clear the goal we strive for. The report stressed that the CPC strives for both the wellbeing of the Chinese people and human progress. To make new and greater contributions for mankind is our Party’s abiding mission, which highlights Chinese Communists’ historical consciousness, international vision and care for the world, as well as shows that the CPC has tightly connected the happiness of the Chinese people with that of the people across the world and fully realized it should possess the spirit of internationalism from the beginning of its founding. This is an important distinction between the CPC and political parties of other countries, as well as an international image the CPC has fostered.

It is in accordance with this basic idea that General Secretary Xi Jinping clearly pointed out in his report that the major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics aims to foster a new type of international relations and build a community with a shared future for mankind, which not only highly condenses the general goal China’s diplomacy in the new era it pursues, but also shows the world the general direction toward which we hope to make joint efforts with other countries. The report clearly defines the connotation of the new type of international relations featuring mutual respect, fairness, justice, and win-win cooperation. Based on the fine tradition of China’s diplomacy featuring equality between large and small countries, these three keywords aim to abandon the law of the jungle that leaves the weak at the mercy of the strong. The report also makes a clear-cut elaboration on the connotation of a community with a shared future for mankind, which is to build an open, inclusive, clean and beautiful world that enjoys lasting peace, universal security, and common prosperity. Based on the excellent cultural traditions that the Chinese nation advocates Datong world and all human beings belong to a big family, a world like that aims to solve various global challenges facing the planet.

The above-mentioned goal

proposed by General Secretary Xi Jinping transcends the similarities and differences between countries, parties and systems, reflects the universal expectation of most countries and conforms to the common interests of the international community. The goal makes China’s foreign policy and philosophy occupy the commanding height of human morality, and shows that Chinese Communists are able to and willing to make contributions to solving problems facing mankind. And it will be widely welcomed and supported by the international community.

The construction of a new type of international relations, and the building of a community with a shared future for mankind make it necessary for China to make practical efforts and set an example, as well as unswervingly pursue a road to a great nation which is different from that of traditional powers. This is not only the historical duty that China, as a big socialist country, should undertake for the development of human society, but also the historical mission that the Chinese Communists should advance for the progress of human political civilization. The important statements about diplomacy in the report of the 19th CPC National Congress will play a significant guiding role in China’s diplomacy in the new era. The diplomatic policy stated in the report will put up a new banner, stimulate great deeds and blaze new trails for the major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics in the new era.

We must be more closely united around the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core, earnestly enhance the awareness of maintaining political integrity, thinking in terms of the big picture, following the leadership core, and keeping in alignment with the central Party leadership, firmly establish the confidence in the path, theory, system, and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics, undertake the glorious duty of China’s diplomacy in the new era with a high degree of political responsibility and a tenacious sense of historical mission, and constantly open up new situations for the major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics while advancing with the times and holding pioneering spirit.

Trump, Netanyahu kiss on wall muralBethlehem

Another Donald Trump mural believed to be the work of

Australian graffiti artist Lushsux has popped up on Israel’s barrier in the occupied West Bank, this time depicting the U.S. president sharing a kiss with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

His face hidden by a headdress, a man who identified himself as Lushsux said against the backdrop of a cement section of the Israeli wall in Bethlehem that he hoped his painting would draw attention to Palestinians stuck in “an indoor prison”.

The Bethlehem wall has become a showcase of protest art voicing Palestinians’ fears that Israel’s West Bank fence-and-concrete barrier is a land grab that may deny them a state. Israelis deem the project a bulwark against Palestinian attack.

”The wall is a message in itself,“ the man, who said he painted the mural overnight, told Reuters. ”I don’t need to write ‘Free Palestine’ or something like that, something really direct ... that people will ignore.

“I just paint what I usually paint and maybe people will start looking at the background and looking at the razor wire and looking at people stuck in here, and maybe that’ll work better,” he said in Australian-accented English.

Murals on the barrier believed to

be the work of Lushsux include one showing Trump kissing an Israeli watchtower and another depicting him placing his hand on the barrier and thinking about building a similar wall on the U.S. border with Mexico. (Reuters)

Southern Governor, HH Shaikh Khalifa bin Ali Al Khalifa, chaired

an extraordinary security meeting at the Southern Governorate’s premises and condemned the terror crime that targeted a police bus and led to the death of a policeman and the injury of several others.

Such a crime contravenes all human values and moral principles, the governor said, stressing that the terrorist attack will never affect the resolve and determination of the brave security personnel who are keen to make every sacrifice to protect the nation and its hard-won achievements, and ensure security for the citizens and residents.

HH Shaikh Khalifa bin Ali affirmed that terror attacks will not affect the cohesion and unity of the Bahraini

people, whose members are aware of the purposes of such heinous crimes.

HH Shaikh Khalifa bin Ali expressed pride in the security personnel’s determination and dedication in combating terrorism and countering whoever seeks to tamper with nation’s security and stability, stressing that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

Addressing the meeting, the governor said that protecting public security and safety is a shared responsibility that should be assumed by all governorates, noting that cooperation and coordination is a priority for the security authorities in order to ensure the kingdom’s security and stability.

Cairo

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi appointed

a new armed forces chief of staff on Saturday, and the interior ministry dismissed several high-ranking officials in an apparent reorganization of the country’s security command.

No reason was given for the reshuffle, but the interior ministry decision came a week after a deadly attack on a police operation in a western desert area of Giza Province, in which the ministry said 16 police were killed after coming under heavy fire.

Egyptian forces have been fighting several armed Islamist groups, mostly in the northern part of the Sinai peninsula, since Sisi helped lead the military overthrow of President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013.

Hundreds of members of the security forces have been killed in attacks by militants in recent years. A local

Islamic State affiliate has been the main foe of the security forces in the north Sinai.

A statement from the presidency said Gen. Mohamed Farid Hegazy would replace Gen. Mahmoud Hegazy, who has been made the president’s adviser for strategic planning and crisis management.

In a separate statement, the

interior ministry announced that it had replaced several high-ranking officials, including the head of homeland security, assistant to the minister for security in Giza province, the director of Giza’s security and director of operations for central security.

It gave no further details on the shakeup. No militant

group has yet claimed responsibility for last week’s attack on the police in a remote desert area of Giza, about 130 km (80 miles) southwest of the capital Cairo.

Thirteen militants were killed in a raid on a farm hideout in the region on Friday. State news agency MENA quoted a security official as saying it was “revenge for the blood of the men who were martyred last week in the oasis”.

The vast western desert region has always been a security headache with arms flowing across the frontier with Libya, where militant groups have found shelter since the country fell into chaos after the 2011 end of Muammar Gaddafi’s rule.

Sisi is a former military commander elected by a landslide in 2014 and presents himself as a bulwark against Islamist militancy. He is widely expected to run for re-election next year. (Reuters)

State-owned Saudi Arabian Airlines will launch its first

flight to Baghdad in 27 years on Monday, state media said, amid a thaw in ties between the Arab neighbours.

The airline, also known as Saudia, will depart from the Red Sea city of Jeddah barely two weeks after Saudi budget carrier flynas made the first commercial flight from Riyadh to Baghdad since 1990.

“Saudi Arabian Airlines will inaugurate regular flights between the kingdom and Iraq after an interruption of 27 years,” the official Saudi Press Agency reported yesterday.

“The resumption of flights is in line with growing ties between the two brotherly countries.”

Flights between Iraq and Saudi Arabia were suspended in August 1990 after former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein ordered his troops into neighbouring Kuwait.

After years of tense relations, ties between Sunni-ruled Saudi

Arabia and Shiite-majority Iraq have begun looking up in recent months.

Earlier this month Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and Saudi King Salman held the first meeting of the joint Saudi-Iraqi coordination council,

which is aimed at upgrading strategic ties.

Iraq is seeking economic benefits from closer ties with Riyadh as both countries suffer from a protracted oil slump.

Saudi Arabia is also seeking to counter Iranian influence

The Turkish police arrested 61 terror suspects linked with the Islamic State in eastern Erzurum and northwestern

Bursa provinces on Sunday, state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

A total of 22 suspects, including senior IS members, were arrested in Erzurum province, and several weapons were also seized in the operation, Xinhua reported.

The security operation was carried out by the Erzurum Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office as part of probes against the terrorist group.

Another 39 suspects were taken into custody during police’s counter-terrorism operations in Bursa province.

The suspects included two Azerbaijanis and 28 Syrians, according to the police officials.

On Saturday, police arrested four IS suspects, including two women who were allegedly planning a terror attack in Istanbul. (IANS)

Raqqa still occupied by coalition after IS defeat: Syria

Hamas ready to hand over border crossing points

Damascus

Syria’s Foreign Ministry said yesterday that Raqqa, where the Islamic State (IS) has recently been defeated, is still

occupied by the US.-led coalition and its allied fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

In a statement, the ministry said the city of Raqqa is still an occupied city and it could never be considered liberated unless the Syrian army enters it.

The ministry charged that the U.S and the SDF, which was the ground force to drive IS out of its de facto capital, were conspiring with IS to enter the city and have IS militants go to other Syrian areas to fight the Syrian army.

Meanwhile, the ministry said the U.S. and its allies are celebrating “what they called as the liberation of Raqqa on the bodies of the killed civilians” in the city. It added that 90 percent of the city is in ruins.

“The calls by the U.S. and its allies to rebuild Raqqa are nothing but a fraud and a scam on the public opinion with the aim of covering the destruction they have caused in Raqqa,” the ministry said in its statement. (Xinhua)

Gaza

A senior official announced on Sunday that the Gaza-based corporation of borders and crossing points, run by

Hamas movement, is ready to hand over the crossing points to the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) on Wednesday.

Hisham Odwan, spokesman of the corporation, said in an emailed press statement that his corporation “is fully ready to handover all crossing points in the Gaza Strip to the PNA on Wednesday.”

He added that handing over control on five crossing points “is part of implementing a reconciliation agreement reached between Hamas and President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah party in Cairo on October 12.”

The five border crossing points are: Erez Crossing Point on the borders between northern Gaza Strip and Israel. Nahal Ozz crossing point on the borders between eastern Gaza city and Israel. Sofah crossing point on the borders between southeast Gaza Strip and Israel. Kerem Shalom commercial crossing point between southern Gaza Strip and Israel. Rafah crossing point between southern Gaza Strip and Egypt. (Xinhua)

Butterfly iQ The Butterfly iQ connects to your iPhone and looks a bit like an electric razor. Place it on the area of the body you wish to examine and a black-and-white ultrasound image will appear on your phone.

Cost The pocket-sized device from Butterfly Network will cost less than $2,000, and works like some-thing straight out of “Star Trek.” It’s the first of its kind in the US, eschewing traditional methods of ultrasound – vibrating crystals – for 9,000 tiny lit-tle drums on a semi-conductor.

AvailabilityThe device is aimed at healthcare practitioners and facilities in the U.S. licensed to perform ultrasounds. It ships in early 2018, and works with iPhone models as far back as the iPhone SE.

PortableThe Butterfly iQ’s portability means it could be used in ambulances or at home. The device’s creator, Butterfly Network, hopes it can incorporate artificial intelligence into the software so that even a novice will be able to use it.

Beyond portable ultrasoundIf it were just a “portable ultrasound” for iPhone that’d be mildly interesting, but this device doesn’t just miniaturize some tech to try and make a buck. It’s disruptive: it does things better than more expen-sive devices do.

Developing advanced versionThe company also plans on implementing AI into the device, which will transition it from something that requires some medical know-how to use, to a gadget capable of guiding novice-hands and providing incred-ible medical insights.

Saudi Arabia ready to extend oil output cut deal: Crown Prince

Khobar

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Saturday

reiterated Saudi Arabia’s readiness to support the extension of a global oil production cut agreement.

“The Kingdom affirms its readiness to extend the production cut agreement, which proved its feasibility by rebalancing supply and demand,” the crown prince said in a statement.

“The high demand for oil has absorbed the increase in shale oil production,” Prince Mohammad added.

Prince Mohammad made similar comments to Reuters in an interview published

on Thursday about the position of the kingdom toward the extension of the oil deal and condition of the market.

“We will support anything to stabilize the oil demand and supply,” he told Reuters when asked whether the kingdom would support extending the agreement until the end of 2018.

“I think now the oil market swallowed the shale oil supply, now we are regaining things again,” he told Reuters.

His comments gave a boost to oil prices, with Brent crude on Friday trading above $60 a barrel for the first time since July 2015. (Reuters)

Kuwaiti telecoms giant Zain yesterday reported a drop

in its third quarter net profits due to currency exchange losses in Sudan and conflict in Iraq.

The company’s net profit in the third quarter fell seven percent to 40 million dinars ($132 million) from 43 million dinars ($142 million) in the same period last year, Zain said in a statement.

Net profit for the first nine months of 2017 was 122 million dinars ($402.6 million), down 1.6 percent from 124 million dinars ($409.2 million) in the same period last year.

The fall in profits was mainly attributed to negative developments in its Zain units

in Iraq and Sudan.Zain said some $20 million

of its net profit losses in the third quarter stemmed from its unit in Sudan, which has seen a steep devaluation of the local currency.

Conflict in Iraq, where Zain operates one of the most active units, also had a negative impact with profits lower than expected.

Its Saudi Arabian arm, Zain Saudi, however posted a net profit for the third quarter in a row -- after more than 10 years in the red.

During the third quarter, Zain sold its treasury stocks, about 10 percent of total shares, to Omantel, in which the Omani government has a majority stake, for $846

million.Consolidated revenues in

the first nine months hit $2.5 billion, down 8.0 percent from $2.7 billion a year ago.

The company’s customer base remained stable at 45.3 million.

Zain is the largest mobile phone operator in Kuwait but also has operations in Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Sudan and manages a unit in Morocco.

The Saudi stock index climbed 0.7 per cent. Unusually, four of the 10 most active stocks were petrochemical producers after oil prices rose sharply at the end of last week, with Brent crude hitting $60 a barrel for the first time since 2015; industry leader Saudi Basic Industries gained 0.8pc.

Saudi Telecom climbed 3.6pc after reporting an 18.2pc rise in third-quarter net profit to 2.62 billion riyals ($698.7 million), topping the 2.28bn forecast of four analysts polled by Reuters. But the increase was mostly due to cost-cutting; revenue from

services fell 8.5pc to 12.84bn riyals.

Another piece of positive news was an announcement by global equity index compiler FTSE Russell that it had launched stand-alone Saudi Arabia indexes, in anticipation of Riyadh meeting requirements in early 2018 to join FTSE’s secondary emerging market index.

National Commercial Bank, the biggest listed lender and one which would attract sizeable fund inflows due to inclusion in the emerging market index, rose 1.8pc.

The Dubai index fell 0.3pc in a broad-based decline, with eight of the 10 most active stocks dropping and none rising.

Qatar’s index edged up 0.1pc as Mesaieed Petrochemical gained 1.0pc on the back of stronger oil prices. Qatar Gas Transport, which would also benefit from higher prices in the oil and

gas industry, surged 3.2pc.I n K u w a i t ,

telecommunications firm Zain fell 3.3pc after it reported net income fell 7pc from a year ago in the third quarter, in line with analysts’ forecasts. The Kuwaiti stock index fell 0.2pc.

Egypt’s index added

0.5pc as blue chip Global Telecom surged 4.1pc. Egypt Aluminum rose 0.7pc after the company reported a leap in quarterly net profit to 712.4m Egyptian pounds ($40.5m) from 28.8m pounds a year earlier, as sales more than doubled. (Reuters)

“We asked him in a way to do stuff that he’d not done before. He gives a very subtle performance here, and he gives a really grown up performance, too,” he added.

Singer Pink says she gave Adele advice on touring as a parent.

In an interview to Q magazine, the “What about us” singer, who has children Willow and Jameson with her husband Carey Hart, said that she told Adele that it wouldn’t be easy to take Angelo, her now five-year-old son with partner Simon Konecki, on the road with her because of the performance schedule, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

“She’s not come back(stage) but I was emailing back and forth with her to tell her how to take a kid on the road. People come with me now and ask me how to tour with a child,” Pink said.

“My top tip is don’t try to do it all. If you’re onstage at nine o’clock, you can’t be at breakfast at 7am. You have to pick your battles,” she added. (IANS)

While giving an interview, Winslet said, “Woody has this way of standing up in the middle of a scene and stopping me and said, ‘No, no,no!’ and I’d go, ‘Okay, what?’ and he’d say, ‘You know it’s just, I am so bored watching you.’ I find that funny.”

FUEGO: ANTONIO GADES COMPANYDate : 1 December 2017, 8:00pmVenue : Bahrain National TheatreThe Antonio Gades Company, a major pillar of Spanish flamenco dance, will be presenting “Fuego”, which is inspired by the work of the late Spanish legendary composer, Manuel de Falla. The plot, choreography and lighting made by the late Antonio Gades and the Spanish film director, photographer and writer Carlos Saura. Coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the death of Antonio Gades, the foundation that carries his name decided to under-take a very significant challenge setting up another version of the Manuel de Falla’s ballet “Enchanted Love”. Titled “Fuego”, this production was the sec-ond scenic interpretation which the choreographer had of Manuel de Falla’s work. Being an exponent of Gades’ core idea “return to tradition if you want to evolve”, this ballet is a transi-tional piece between the almost mythi-cal setups in the classic plays, Carmen and Fuenteovejuna. It was also the last of the joint mythical flamenco works by Gades and Saura, with the same overlaying structure they followed in Carmen, first as a film and secondly as a ballet.

The ballet show will consist of a unique Dance Open Festival production, a Russian Ballet Company with the UK ballet star soloists from the Royal Ballet theatre of London. The original UK-Russian work of art, Shakespeare’s eternal love story with wonderful music by the Great Russian composer Prokofiev, will be presented by immensely pas-sionate and talented English and Russian dancers, dressed in mag-nificent costumes created by Italian designers. This unfortunate yet beauti-ful story is set against a wonderful evo-cation of 16th Century Verona, Italy, and includes a bustling marketplace that erupts into a violent sword fight, and a lavish ball held in an elegant mansion.A live orchestra will be performing music by S. Prokofiev during the ballet show of Romeo & Juliet.

NASHAZ EXHIBITIONDate: Till October 31, 8:00am - 8:00pmVenue: Art Centre NASHAZ is an Arabic term that by definition means; a combination of sounds that strikes the ear harshly. An off-tune. A Dissonance. In Music, Dissonance is a categori-zation of simultaneous sounds; it is associated with harshness, unpleasant-ness, or unacceptability. Even though dissonant sounds objectively identi-fied, it more often is a subjective, con-ventional, cultural, and style- and/or period-dependent factor that decides what is acceptable and what is not. Dissonance can then be defined as a combination of sounds that does not belong to the style under considera-tion. Although dissonance in music may make some listeners feel uneasy, it ultimately helps to create tension and a sense of motion in compositions. You can compare musical dissonance to the conflict between characters in a story. The tension builds and rises to a peak, and then is resolved by the story’s calm conclusion. Dissonance in music is often, but not always, followed by harmonic resolution in musical pieces. In Society, Dissonance is defying the norm. It is swimming against current, colouring outside the lines and as F. Scott Fitzgerald puts it, “it is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.”In this exhibition, NASHAZ, a group of Bahraini creatives gets together to pro-duce conceptual art installations reflect-ing dissonance in societies through social norms and attitudes often over-seen in daily lives. The exhibition coin-cides with the Bahrain International Music Festival.

You may feel like a snail emerging from its shell. When no one is looking, you slowly and cautiously stick your head out and put up your antennae to take a reading on the outside world. When you see a creature like you, you feel comfortable and come out of your shell a bit more.

Your boisterous, generous attitude is inspiring and welcomed by others. There are also some people who consider your behaviour ostentatious or arrogant. You may wonder how this is possible, since your intentions are good. You want people to share in the love and good times. You’re attentive to others’ feelings.Just as soon as you taste success, something comes along to make you feel badly about it. Perhaps another person is jealous of you, and so does or says things that make you feel uncertain. Perhaps the doubt comes from an internal source that says that you don’t deserve prosperity. Don’t be thrown off course by this.

In order to maintain peace and harmony, you may wear many different masks. By doing this, you may forget your inner truth and what it is you truly believe. Friction between your lively, communicative outside and your soft, vulnerable inside may make it difficult for you to find the solution you seek. You have the answers you need. Trust yourself when you find them.

The next task on your road to success may be a pill that’s hard to swallow. Perhaps it involves interacting with someone you don’t want to deal with. You know that you have to adopt some sort of false persona in order to get what you want. You’re sensitive to this dilemma, and you may feel emotional about it, making you hesitate to go through with the plan.

Debilitating indecision may plague you. You’ve been coasting along letting your good luck see you through to prosperity. It’s like you’re tied to a rope and constantly testing its limits. Unfortunately, you could hit a snag and feel you can go no further. Emotional issues suggest that you didn’t take your feelings into account. It’s time to reevaluate your approach.

You may feel like you’re doing all the work in a project or relationship and if you pull out for even a minute, the whole thing will fall apart. Be careful of putting so great a burden on yourself that you grow resentful of everyone else. You’re good at criticizing other people’s actions, but maybe the person you need to talk to about these issues is you.

It’s important to remain flexible, but not so much that you can’t make a decision about anything. Your head says one thing while your heart says another. When you give both of them free rein in an effort to be as flexible as possible, they go in opposite directions. Postpone making any important decisions until your path becomes clearer.

You may feel like you’re riding a fast train to success. Success can be measured in different ways. Today it’s important that you consider your emotional success and how your feelings fit into your life. You may discover that the train you’re on isn’t the train you should be on. Don’t be afraid to get off at the next station and transfer to a different line.

You feel emotionally strong, even though certain people may be getting in the way of your plans. You can accomplish a great deal. You’re only responsible for yourself. You feel a drive to work harder than usual. Even though you may be working very hard, your general mindset is good. You should enjoy your day regardless of the circumstances.

You may feel like there’s a big opportunity waiting for you but your head is too muddled to take advantage of it. Perhaps you’re afraid that if you accept this offer now, you’ll miss an even better one later. Don’t delay. Change is progress. Go after the things that catch your eye and draw you in. These opportunities won’t last forever. Stop dreaming and start doing.

Your sensitive nature is attractive. People who come to you for advice and guidance aren’t disappointed. You have a solid, practical perspective, yet you’re also receptive and understanding. People with flashy ideas and a reckless way about them might try to sell you a pig in a poke. Don’t be thrown off. Stay strong within yourself.

Barack Obama has been called for jury duty and

the former US president plans to show up, according to court officials.

The chief judge of Cook County, Illinois, announced at a budget hearing on Friday that Obama would be completing his civic duty next month, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Chief judge Tim Evans told the newspaper that the courts would make adjustments to accommodate Obama’s security detail. He said: “Obviously we will make certain that he has all the accouterments

that accompany a former president. His safety will be uppermost in our minds.”

Evans continued: “He made it crystal-clear to me through his representative that he would carry out his public duty as a citizen and resident of this community.”

This is not the first time that Obama has been called for jury duty in recent years. In 2010, he received a summons for jury duty in Cook County, where he owns a home, just as he was preparing for his first state of the union address. Obama, who has a law degree from Harvard, did not serve on that jury. (The Guardian)

Huge Barcelona rally for Spanish unityBarcelona

Chanting “Viva Espana”, thousands of protesters

gathered in the Catalan capital Barcelona yesterday, furious at a move by the region’s now deposed leaders to break away from Spain.

“In my town, I am unable to leave my house with the Spanish flag,” fumed 19-year-old student Marina Fernandez from Girona, a separatist stronghold, as a sea of protesters waved the red-and-yellow Spanish national flag.

“I am enraged about what they are doing to the country

that my grandparents built.”An hour before the

scheduled 12:00 pm (1100 GMT) start of the pro-unity demonstration in the centre of the city of Gaudi, thousands had already gathered, chanting “Prison for Puigdemont”, and “Long live Spain”.

The region’s leader Carles Puigdemont and his government were deposed by the central government on Saturday, a day after Catalan lawmakers voted to declare the region of 7.5 million people an independent republic. (AFP)

Strong winds battered northern and central

Europe yesterday, killing two people in Poland, two in the Czech Republic and one in Germany, with rail traffic in large sections of Germany to remain suspended until Monday.

The victims in Poland and the Czech Republic were killed by falling trees. The storm also knocked

out power to thousands of Czechs and Poles.

Winds reached more than 100 kph in several parts of the Czech Republic and topped out at 180 kph on Snezka, at 1,602 meters the country’s highest mountain, Czech Television reported.

Bild newspaper reported that a 63-year-old German man drowned at a campsite in Lower Saxony as a result of a storm surge. (Reuters)

Mogadishu

Somali security forces have ended a nightlong siege

at a Mogadishu hotel by five extremist attackers who stormed the building after a suicide car bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle at the entrance gate.

The attack killed 23 people, according to police, who had earlier given a death toll of 25. Troops regained control of the Nasa-Hablod hotel on Sunday, having killed three attackers and captured two alive, said Captain Mohamed Hussein.

Islamic extremist group al-Shabab quickly claimed responsibility for the attack.

The assault started Saturday afternoon when a suicide truck bomb exploded outside the popular hotel in the capital. The blast twisted vehicles and caused massive

damage to nearby buildings which were left with only their walls standing.

The attackers invaded the hotel and gunfire continued as security forces fought them inside the building. Two more blasts were heard, one when an attacker detonated a suicide vest.

Saturday’s attack came two weeks after more than 350 people were killed in a massive truck bombing on a busy Mogadishu street in Somalia’s worst ever attack.

The government’s Minister of Electricity & Water Salim Aliyow Ibrow was rescued from the hotel as heavy gunfire continued in the shoot-out. Some extremists hurled grenades and cut off the building’s electricity as night fell.

Included in the dead were a mother and three children,

including a baby, all shot in the head, Hussein said. Other victims included a senior Somali police colonel, a former lawmaker and a former government minister.

Saturday’s bomber pretended his truck had broken down outside the gate, said police Colonel Mohamed Abdullahi. The bomber stopped outside the heavily fortified hotel and pretended to repair the truck before detonating it, he said.

Al-Shabab often targets high-profile areas of Mogadishu. Although it quickly claimed responsibility for Saturday’s attack, it has not commented on the massive attack two weeks ago; experts have said the death toll in the earlier bombing was so high that the group hesitated to alienate Somali citizens. Utqiagvik, Alaska

When airport foreman Scott Babcock went out

onto the runway at Wiley Post-Will Rogers Memorial Airport in Utqiagvik, Alaska, to clear some snow, he was surprised to find a visitor waiting for him on the asphalt: a 450-pound bearded seal chilling in the milky sunshine.

“It was very strange to see the seal. I’ve seen a lot of things on runways, but never a seal,” Babcock told ABC News. His footage of the hefty mammal went viral after he posted it on Facebook.

According to local TV station KTVA, animal control was called in and eventually moved the seal with the help

of a “sled.”Normal air traffic soon

resumed, the station said.Poking fun at the seal’s

surprise appearance, the Alaska Department of Transportation warned pilots on Tuesday of “low sealings” in the North Slope region — a pun on

“low ceilings,” a term used to describe low clouds and poor visibility.

Though this was the first seal sighting on the runway at the airport, the department said other animals, including birds and polar bears, have been spotted in the past. (HuffPost)

Riyadh

The man who may soon be king of Saudi Arabia is

charting a new, more modern course for a country so conservative that for decades there were no concerts or film screenings and women who attempted to drive were arrested.

Since catapulting to power with the support of his father, the king, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has pushed forth changes that could usher in a new era for one of the United States’ most important allies and swing the kingdom away from decades of ultraconservative dogma and restrictions. He has introduced musical concerts and movies again and is seen as the force behind the king’s decision to grant women the right to drive as of next year.

Opposition to the changes has so far been muted. When social openings in the kingdom were taking place four decades ago, Sunni extremists opposed to the monarchy laid siege to Islam’s holiest site in Mecca.

Prince Mohammed’s agenda is upending the ruling Al Saud’s long-standing alliance with the kingdom’s

clerical establishment in favour of synchronising with a more cosmopolitan, global capitalism that appeals to international investors and maybe even non-Muslim tourists.

The prince grabbed headlines in recent days by vowing a return to “moderate Islam”. He also suggested that his father’s generation had steered the country down a problematic path and that it was time to “get rid of it”.

In his sweeping “Vision 2030” plan to wean Saudi Arabia off of its near total dependence on petrodollars, Prince Mohammed laid out a vision for “a tolerant country with Islam as its constitution and moderation as its method.”

Prince Mohammed, or MBS as he is widely known, used a rare public appearance on stage at a major investor conference in the capital, Riyadh, this week to drive home that message to a global audience.

“We only want to go back to what we were: moderate Islam that is open to the world, open to all religions,” he said in the ornate grand hall of the Ritz-Carlton. “We will not waste

30 years of our lives in dealing with extremist ideas. We will destroy them today.”

His remarks were met with applause and a front-page article in Britain’s The Guardian newspaper. In expanded remarks to the paper, the 32-year-old prince said that successive Saudi monarchs “didn’t know how to deal with” Iran’s 1979 revolution that brought to power a clerical Shiite leadership still in place today.

That same year Saudi

rulers weathered a stunning blow: Sunni extremists laid siege to Islam’s holiest site in Mecca for 15 days. The attack was carried out by militants opposed to social openings taking place at the time, seeing them as Western and un-Islamic.

Indeed, Sunni extremists have used the intolerant views propagated by the ideology known as Wahhabism to justify violence against others. Wahhabism has governed life in Saudi Arabia since its foundation 85 years ago.

The ruling Al Saud responded to the events of 1979 by empowering the state’s ultraconservatives. To hedge the international appeal of Iran’s Shiite revolution, the government backed efforts to export the kingdom’s foundational Wahhabi ideology abroad.

To appease a sizeable conservative segment of the population at home, cinemas were shuttered, women were banned from appearing on state television and the religious police were emboldened.

Much is now changing under the crown prince as he consolidates greater powers and prepares to inherit the throne.

There are plans to build a Six Flags theme park and a semi-autonomous Red Sea tourist destination where the strict rules on women’s dress will likely not apply. Females have greater access to sports, the powers of the once-feared religious police have been curtailed and restrictions on gender segregation are being eased.

Unlike previous Saudi monarchs, such as King Abdullah who backed gradual

and cautious openings, Prince Mohammed is moving quickly.

More than half of Saudi Arabia’s 20 million citizens are below the age of 25, meaning millions of young Saudis will be entering the workforce in the coming decade. The government is urgently trying to create more jobs and ward off the kinds of grievances that sparked uprisings in other Arab countries where unemployment is rampant and citizens have little say in government.

The prince has to find solutions now for the problems he is set to inherit as monarch.

“What MBS is doing is a must requirement for any kind of economic reform. Economic reform requires a new Protestant ethic if you will, a new brand of Islam,” said Maamoun Fandy, director of the London Global Strategy Institute.

This new Saudi version of “moderate Islam” can be understood as one that is amenable to economic reforms; it does not close shops at prayer time or banish women from public life, Fandy said. (AP)

Kanpur, India

India came up trumps

in a battle of nerves against a gutsy New

Zealand to win the all-important third ODI by six

runs and clinch their seventh successive bilateral series by 2-1 margin yesterday.

Rohit Sharma (147 off 138) and Virat Kohli (113

off 106) conjured up classy hundreds to fire

India to a record 337 for six after being put into bat.

The target was imposing but New Zealand fought gamely through Colin Munro (75 off 62), Kane Williamson (64 off 84) and Tom Latham (65 off 52) before being restricted to 331 for 7 in the wake of some fine death bowling by Jasprit Bumrah.

For the better part of the match, Indian bowlers dished out an

ordinary bowling p e r f o r m a n c e

but bounced back when it mattered the most -- in the final three overs.

Required to defend 15 runs in the final over, ‘King of Death’ Bumrah (3/47 in 10 overs) delivered yet again and conceded only eight runs in the 50th over. More importantly, he bowled an astounding 32 dot balls in his 10-over spell.

It seemed it was game on with the flying start provided left-hand opener Munro.

He set the tone for the daunting task on the very first ball he face, flicking Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a monstrous six over midwicket.

Three more fours including the one from overthrow was to follow in the first over of the innings that went for 19 runs. The in-form Kumar had an off day as he leaked 92 runs from his 10 overs.

While his opening partner Martin Guptill (10) fell

cheaply again, Munro and Kane Williamson (64) kept the visitors very much in the hunt with a 109-stand off 105 balls.

The pair batted with supreme confidence on a flat surface, especially Munro who was not afraid to switch hit and charge down against the spinners. It was also a knock of substance from Williamson, who had not fired in the series until tonight.

The two had taken New Zealand to 152 for one in 24 overs before under pressure India bounced back in the match with Yuzvendra Chahal removing the set batsmen. Their fall stopped the run flow and the required run rate per over went beyond eight, leaving the heroes of Mumbai Ross Taylor and Latham a lot to do.

They batted well, completing a 79-run partnership off 69 balls with their team needing 91 off the last 10 overs.

Latham carried on and played flawless to take his team on the brink of victory alongside Henry Nicholls before nerves got the better of them during the business end of the innings. (TOI)

David Miller’s world-record breaking innings of 101 off

36 balls gave South Africa clean sweeps over Bangladesh in all three formats with an 83-run win in the final Twenty20 yesterday. Miller hammered the fastest century in T20 internationals - he reached 100 off 35 balls to smash the record by 10 balls - to propel South Africa to 224-4 batting first.

Bangladesh was 141 all out in 18.3 overs, another heavy defeat on a difficult five-week tour for the visiting team.

It was the first time that South Africa had won every game in three series against a touring team, Cricket South Africa said.

While South Africa gained valuable preparation under new coach Ottis Gibson ahead of tours by India and Australia, Bangladesh failed to live up to the promise it showed recently in home series.

South Africa took the test

series 2-0, winning those matches by 333 runs and then an innings and 254 runs. It swept the ODIs 3-0, with winning margins of 10 wickets, 104 runs and 200 runs.

Bangladesh came closest to something to celebrate when it went down by 20 runs in the first T20.

In the final game of the tour, Miller hit five sixes in a row in the 19th over, and nine sixes and seven fours in all in his record-breaking innings. He beat the record of fellow South African Richard Levi, who scored a century off 45 balls against New Zealand in 2012.

“Obviously a really special feeling.” Miller said. (dailymail.co.uk)

Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki beat Venus Williams to claim the

biggest title of her career at the WTA Finals in Singapore.

Williams - at 37, the oldest woman to ever reach the final - lost 6-4 6-4.

After a tight first set, number six seed Wozniacki stormed into a 5-0 lead in the second.

Williams then won four straight games but Wozniacki, 27, converted her second Championship point to beat the American for the first time.

“It feels amazing, I can’t believe I am here as the winner,” she told BT Sport.

“Venus Williams is a great champion and she made it very, very difficult for me. This is my biggest title to date.”

Fifth seed Williams went into yesterday’s final with a 7-0 record

against Wozniacki stretching back to 2007, and having won just one set against the American.

The world number five has been in fine form this year and was a finalist at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

But the veteran will finish 2017 without a title after Wozniacki prevented her from regaining the Finals trophy she won nine years ago.

Former world number one Wozniacki saw huge success on her serve on the slow surface in Singapore, ending with a tournament-leading 21 aces.

And the Dane backed that fine serving up with only eight unforced errors in the final.

It appeared to be one-way traffic in the second set, with Williams looking heavy in the legs and no longer able to

attack Wozniacki at the net.But the 37-year-old rallied to

produce some of her best tennis and turn the tide.

With Wozniacki serving for the title at 5-3, Williams outlasted her younger opponent in a gruelling rally before then hitting a sublime forehand passing shot to get back on serve.

But it was Wozniacki’s day though and, after hitting her first Championship point long, a perfect backhand saw her break serve and seal her second title of 2017 following last month’s Pan-Pacific Open in Tokyo.

It completes a fine comeback season for the two-time Grand Slam finalist, who endured an injury-marred 2016 and finished ranked number 19, her lowest position since 2007. (BBC)

Lucas Pouille soared to his biggest career crown at the

Erste Bank Open 500, dominating countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-1, 6-4 yesterday.

The Frenchman notched his first ATP World Tour 500-level trophy, earning a fourth title in his young career. With the victory, he became the first player in 2017 to win on all surfaces, adding a hard-court crown in Vienna to triumphs on the clay of Budapest and grass of Stuttgart.

Despite the loss, Tsonga stays in the hunt for one of the two remaining berths in the Emirates ATP Race To London. Bidding to make his fourth appearance at the season finale, he is just 295 points behind Pablo Carreno Busta for the eighth and final spot. All will be on the line at the final ATP

World Tour Masters 1000 event of the year next week in Paris.

“I’m very happy with how the week ended,” said Pouille. “All the work I’ve done has paid off... It’s my first ATP World Tour 500 title. I played some great tennis and I was a bit emotional at the end. It’s always great to finish the week with a victory.

“Jo has been playing for two weeks now and I knew he’d be a little tired. I had to be focused on every point. He made a few mistakes with the forehand and I found a way to win the match.”

Pouille was off to the races from the first ball at the Wiener Stadthalle. After denying a break point in his second service game, the younger Frenchman was indefatigable from the baseline and consistently forced his compatriot into uncomfortable positions. (atpworldtour)

Times as SanTina were incredible: HingisSingapore

Swiss legend Martina Hingis, who bid adieu to professional tennis

on Saturday, applauded Indians Sania Mirza and Leander Paes, who she partnered in her third innings in the sport.

The 37-year-old, who added 10 major crowns to her already considerable collection in this outing, bowed out of the last-four of the BNP Paribas WTA Finals, playing alongside Taipei’s Yung-Jan Chan.

“I will forever be grateful to have had these partnerships,” Hingis, who won seven major titles pairing with Sania and Paes in the doubles and mixed-doubles, said. “Without Sania, I wouldn’t have come back and had that feeling again. When we won Wimbledon, it was pure joy. And getting back to No. 1 was one of the things. I couldn’t have done it alone.”

The Swiss added, “The times as ‘SanTina’ were incredible.”

“So were the ones with Leander, winning four Slams more,” she said. “I couldn’t have done it without them. Adding 10 more Slams to my career in the third journey was pretty cool. Every single partner I had on the way has been amazing.” (TOI)

Halep earns WTA year-end World No.1 singles ranking

St Petersburg

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA)

announced yesterday that Romania’s Simona Halep has earned the 2017 WTA Year-End World No.1 singles ranking, presented by Dubai Duty Free.

The Romanian became the 25th player to achieve the No.1 ranking on October 9, 2017 following her 27th career WTA final at the China Open in Beijing, and will hold the No.1 ranking on November 9, the official year-end rank date for the 2017 season.

“I’m very proud to end the season as the WTA World No.1,” said Halep.

“I have worked extremely hard to be the best player I can be, and it is an honour to be in the No.1 position at the end of the year.” (wtatennis) Simona Halep

Singapore

(BBC)

Pouille powers to biggest title

Vienna

Lucas Pouille soared to his biggest career crown at the

Basel

Switzerland’s Roger Federer beat Argentine Juan Martin

Del Potro to win the Swiss Indoors and narrow the gap on world number one Rafael Nadal. Federer’s 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 6-3 win moves him within 1,460 points of the Spaniard before next week’s Paris Masters, the final regular-season event.

The 36-year-old claimed an eighth crown in Basel and his seventh title of 2017.

Victory for Del Potro would have moved him into the final qualifying place for the ATP finals in London.

Having won in Stockholm last week, the world number 19 was targeting back-to-back titles in Basel but it was not to be for the 29-year-old, who remains one place behind Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta.

Del Potro must reach at least the semi-finals in Paris to claim the final spot.

Federer and Del Potro had met on four previous occasions in 2017, with the latter winning their last meeting - a US Open quarter-final last month.

In a tight opening set, Federer had the chance to take it on serve, only for Del Potro to break, and the Swiss player then lost five points in a row to surrender the tie-break.

Federer’s frustrations came to a head in the fourth game

of the second set when he blew the chance to stamp his authority back on the match.

The 19-time Grand Slam champion carved out a break point and took control of the rally at 30-40, only to send a

simple backhand volley wide.It triggered an angry

outburst as Federer smashed his racquet into the net in a rare show of emotion.

However, he regained his composure to break in the

final game of the set, before wrapping up the victory with two further breaks in the third.

Federer now has 95 career titles, with American Jimmy Connors leading the all-time list on 109. (BBC)

Real Madrid handed shock defeat at Girona

Montilivi, Girona

Girona claimed a stunning 2-1 victory over Real

Madrid to deal a major blow to the La Liga champions’ hopes of retaining their title.

Although it is still early in the season, Zinedine Zidane’s side already have eight points to make up on rivals Barcelona.

Few would have seen a hiccup coming at Barcelona’s Catalan neighbours Girona, playing in the top flight for the first time.

This is by far the biggest result in the minnows’ history and will no doubt be celebrated wildly across Catalonia given the political backdrop.

This was no smash-and-grab raid either, with Girona twice hitting the post in the first half and unlucky to be behind to an Isco breakaway goal.

They turned the tables with two goals in four minutes early in the second half from Cristhian Stuani and Portu and withstood the inevitable Real salvo with relative comfort.

Girona attacked from the off.Kiko Casilla did just enough

to put off Portu at the near post when a clever free kick

picked out the striker but the Real keeper was beaten three minutes later by Pablo Maffeo’s cross-shot, which hit the far post.

To make matters worse for Girona, Real promptly broke away and scored the opening goal. Karim Benzema drove forward through the middle and played in Cristiano Ronaldo. He cut inside and sent a dipping right-footed shot from 20 yards, which Bono pushed out straight to Isco, who knocked the ball inside the post. Ronaldo has only scored once in the league this season and set about trying to add to his tally, first pulling a deflected shot just wide and then sending a crisp half-volley straight at Bono.

Benzema should have at least tested Bono as Real piled on the pressure but, having been played through by Ronaldo, he shot wastefully over the bar.

Girona were certainly not content simply to sit back and came agonisingly close to an equaliser in the 35th minute when Aday’s cross was met by a superb flick from Portu that hit the inside of the post. (espn.in)

Joshua beats Carlos Takam to retain heavyweight titlesCardiff

Anthony Joshua has retained his heavyweight

titles in an unexpectedly tough fight against stand-in opponent Carlos Takam.

The referee stopped the fight in the 10th round after Joshua rocked his opponent, who was battling on despite a bad cut over his eye.

It was a bloody bout in Cardiff, and Joshua picked up an injury of his own early on and may have broken his nose after a clash of heads.

Takam, 36, took the fight with 12 days’ notice after Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev picked up an injury.

The Cameroon-born fighter put Joshua through a far tougher test than many expected and never appeared fazed by Joshua’s pressure.

Takam was visibly hurt by the cut he picked up in the fourth, and with blood streaming the doctor was called

several times in the fight to see if the fighter could continue.

He was also given the count

in the fourth after his glove touched the canvas following a left from Joshua, but bravely

fought through to the later rounds and caught the champ with some decent shots.

But when Joshua landed punches in the 10th, the referee quickly stepped in to stop

the fighter taking any more punishment to his eye.

Boos rang out around the 76,000-strong crowd in the Principality Stadium, as Takam protested with the referee.

Joshua was ahead on the pundits’ scorecards but the challenger was clearly determined on taking the British IBF and WBA heavyweight champion to the final round.

“Unfortunately, the ref stopped it. I think people wanted to see Takam on the floor and I was getting there,” said Joshua.

“It feels like (a broken nose), he started catching up in the later rounds and it would have been a disaster if I’d lost. But I kept my composure and continued to fight.”

Takam - who will have won a lot of fans for his determined performance - told fans that he wanted a rematch. (Sky News)

Roger Federer wins eighth Basel CrownP23

Leicester

Leicester City got the Claude Puel era off to a perfect start with a comfortable

2-0 home win over Everton that deepened the Merseyside club’s problems.

Leicester began the game on the front foot and threatened after only four minutes when Demarai Gray raced forward and sent a low drive just wide from outside the area.

Gray was soon causing concern again, crossing for Ben Chilwell who sent a wild effort off target, and defender Wes Morgan had an effort deflected over soon afterwards.

But Puel’s team had the lead they deserved with 18 minutes gone thanks to Jamie Vardy, who put the finishing touch to a swift counter involving Gray and Riyad Mahrez.

They almost made it two with Everton reeling as Vardy raced down the left and squared for Mahrez, who won the ball back from Ashley Williams but saw Pickford gather his effort.

Wayne Rooney found Aaron Lennon inside the area but his pull-back fell behind

Dominic Calvert-Lewin -- and within moments Leicester had doubled their lead.

Gray again created the danger, getting down the left and firing in a low cross that was sliced into his own net by young right-back Jonjoe Kenny with less than half an hour played.

Lennon felt he had been fouled inside the penalty area as David Unsworth’s Everton tried to muster a response, but the referee waved away their appeals, and Kevin Mirallas lashed wide.

Unsworth made a double change at the break, bringing on Oumar Niasse and Beni Baningime for Lennon and Mirallas, and Everton made a strong start with Tom Davies almost putting Calvert-Lewin through on goal.

Niasse then had a shot comfortably held by Kasper Schmeichel before being denied by a good Morgan interception when Calvert-Lewin crossed towards him.

But Everton were still struggling to create much in the way of clear chances and Leicester, despite failing to replicate the threat they showed in the first half, held on comfortably. (espn.in)
