1. IN~IROL)UCT~ON

I . The standardon Kilometre Stoneswas publishedby theIndian Roads Congressoriginally in 1960. It wasreviewedby theSpecificationsand Stand~~rdsCommittee(personnelgiven on insidefront and hackcover) in October, 1979 with respectto the languageof inscription and certainmodificationswere made.

1.2. The revisedstandard incorporating these changes wasapprovedby the Council of Indian RoadsCongressat their meetingheld at Gauhation 28th October, 1979 and is recommendedforadoption on all roadsin the country.

2. DESIGN OF Ku ~1ETRE STONES

2.1. Kilometre stonesshall correspondto the Type Designsshown in Plates1, 2 and 3.

2.2. On National Highways, State Highways and MajorDistrict Roads,thekilometre stonesusedshall havetwo sizes:

(i) “ordinary kilometre stones’’ of smallersite vide Plate 1; and

(ii) “fifth kilometre stones”(i.e. kilometre stones installed after everyfive kilometres)of biggersize vide Plate 2.

2.3. On OtherDistrict Roadsand Village Roads, the kilo-metrestonesshall be uniformly of onesize as shownin Plate3.

3. MATERIALS

3.1. Kilometre stonesmay be made of suitable materials,availablelocally, suchas hardstone,cementconcreteetc.

4. SCRIPT AND SEQUENCE OF INSCRIPTION

4.1. Ordinary kilometre stonesput upon NationalHighways,State Highways etc. (vide Plate 1) shall he inscribedeither in Hindior local languageand indicatethe nameand distance to the next

important (i.e. intermediate) town or the terminal(startingstationas the casemay be (see para4.2). Fifth kilometre stones, on theother hand, shall be inscribedonly in Roman andshow the nameand distanceof the terminal,Tstartingstationaswell as of the inter-mediatetown (seepara4.2 and Plate 2).

4,2, The place names shall be inscribedin different scriptsin the following sequence,only onescript being used on any onekilometre stone:

4.3- The above order and weightage of a script may bemodified by the Road Authority if considerednecessary. Forinstance,wherelocal script happensto be the same as Devnagri,instead of the sequencefor ordinary kilometre stones given inpara 4.2, the kilometrage to the next important town and theterminal/startingstation could be shown on alternatestones.

4.4. On kilometre stonesfixed on Other District Roads andVillage Roads, the inscription m ly be in the official language(i.e.Hindi in Devnagriscript) or the script of the recognised regionallanguage at the discretion of the local Road Authority. Inscrip-tion in Romanscript is not necessaryunless the road leads to aplaceof tourist or archaeologicalinterest or there are other goodreasons.

4.5. in every case, the numerals on kilometre stonesshallhe inscribedin the international form of Indian numerals. Localor i)evnagri numerals shall not be used vide Article 343 (i) of theConstitution0 l’ India.

4.6. On eachkilometre stone, its numberSshall he inscribedott the side of the stonefacing the carriageway(see PlatesI, 2 and3). In caseof thin stonesmadeof R.C.C.or sonic othermaterial,the digits may be inscribedonebelow the other starting from thetop. Thus 426 will be shown as:

5. SIZE. SHAPE AND SPACING OF LETTERS/NUMERALS

5.1. Lettersand numeralson kilometre stones shall be offollowing size:

Height of lettersfor PlaceName ,:. 80 mmHeight of numerals for Kilometrage ... 130 mm

Height of numeralsfor Route Numbers . 100 mm

5.2. Shapesand dimensionsof standard letters!numeralsforthe abovesizesaregiven in Plates4 and5. For long place names,the thicknessof letters and the spacing between them may bereducedsuitably, however without making any change in theirheight.

5,3, When inscribing letters or numerals, all characters

having an arc at top or bottom should be extended slightly aboveor below the line of the other letters/numerals. This is in accor-dancewith the acceptedpracticefor roundedlettersand numerals,

5.4. Recommended spacing between adjacent letters/numeralsis given in Table I, and for any combination can beworked out through a two-step processdescribed in the footnote

below the Table. This space is the distance measured horizontallybetween the extreme right edge ‘or the preceding letter/numeraland the extreme left edge of the following letter/numeral. No partof any letter/numeral may extend into this space. The other edgeclearances should be as. given below:

5.5. On kilometre stones inscribed in a language other thanRoman, the style of lettering shall be the one in general use. Thespacing between single or compound Letters shall be at least equalto the thickness of the vertical strokes’or the thickness of strokesof letters in case of scripts having no vertical strokes (such asOriya, Telugu and Kannada).

6. COLOUR OF BACKGROUND AND OF THE INSCRIPTION6.1. ‘The background colour shaLl be white with black Letters

and numerals for names of stations and distances. The semiecircular portion of kilometre stones shall be painted canary yeLlow(1.5. Shade 309) on National Highways, brilliant green (l.S.Shade 221) on State Highways, and ‘white on Mijor DistrictRoads. Route numbers written on the semi-circular portion shallbe in black colour on canary yeLlow and white backgrounds, and idwhite colour on brilliant green background.

7. PLACEMENT7.1. Normally kilometre stones shall be located on left-hand

side of the road as one proceeds from the station from which thekilometre count starts. On divided roads having a central median,kilometre stones should be provided at the left on both sides ofthe road i.e. independently for each direction of travel.

7.2. Kilometre stones shall be fixed at right angles to thecentre line of the carriageway. On embankments, these shall belocated on the edge of the roadway beyond the shoulders, if

necessary on specially erected platforms. In cut sections, theseshall be fixed clear of the shoulders as well as the side drains.(See Plate 6).
