Fall Enrollment Figures to Highlight State of the Texas Tech System Luncheon

Digital marketing, or web marketing, and social media have a very low cost to entry but that doesn’t mean we should ignore tracking our investment and return. While ROI is not entirely possible when it comes to measuring the success of a relationship and loyalty, it can be applied to the proof of such – gaining more new customers and retaining the existing ones.

You need to continue (or enter into) digital marketing and social media regardless of what your initial attempts are producing. To throw away the idea of digital marketing because you’re not seeing results, is like tossing out a cookbook because you made a recipe in it that you didn’t like. If you’re not seeing the results you want, change the recipe to suit. The same holds true for social media and digital marketing. But you’ll have trouble adjusting your marketing recipe if you don’t know what you started with.

Before you begin tracking you need to do two things: 1. Draw a line in the sand. List all of your followers, likes,

subscribers etc. as they stand today. Your success needs a baseline, so write it all down.

2. Start tracking your digital marketing efforts by day. There are a number of software platforms that can help you keep track of your digital marketing efforts, or you can track them in a spreadsheet, or use pen and paper. Use something you can update quickly and extrapolate the information you need just as fast. If you don’t, you’ll stop using it. You’ll want to track when (and what) you post to your blog and social media, any marketing emails, when you send your newsletters, etc. You’ll need this info because you’ll compare your efforts to your traffic and inquiries.

What Should I Be Tracking on My Website?There are several things you need to start tracking on a

weekly basis. A weekly basis is ideal because it allows you to see trends quickly and readjust as needed. Monthly allows too much time to elapse before you notice the numbers.

For the first several weeks after you start tracking look for true patterns before you begin tweaking. Until you have historical data you won’t know a random blip from a need for course correction.

The data listed below can all be obtained from Google Analytics. If you don’t have analytics set up on your site, do so today. It’s important. Really important.

Assuming you do, you need to track:• The number of unique visitors to your site each week. • Where your website visitors are coming from (traffic

sources). Look at organic, direct, and referral sources. Organic searchers reach you after typing in a keyword associated (hopefully) with your business. Direct referrals key in the name of your business or your URL. Referral sources come from social media, outside links on other blogs and other places that “refer” them to you. If one area is weak, try some marketing activities to change that.

• The number of blog readers each week.• The number of new customer inquiries you receive and

where they’re coming from.• Which customer inquiries become customers. You’re

looking for patterns here. Maybe you notice that people referred to you from your company page on LinkedIn are twice as likely to buy from you as people coming from Facebook.

• Abandonment rate, if you have an e-commerce site. • Effectiveness of your call-to-action. Every page must

ask your audience to do something. Whatever you’re asking, needs to be tracked.

There is no way to measure return on investment without a calculation. You must measure a baseline and note the changes that are occurring to gain a better understanding of what is working and what needs to be adjusted.

If you continue to plug away at your marketing, taking stabs in the dark, your efforts will fall flat because you won’t recognize opportunities to build on successful trends nor will you notice disinterest with particular posts. Digital marketing is not a final destination, it’s a journey towards business success that needs to be evaluated periodically. You want to provide your customers with something they want. Without digital marketing you’ll have no way to know whether you’re accomplishing that or not.

7 Numbers You Should Track in Your Digital Marketing

The three key leaders of the Texas Tech University System and its two Lubbock components will be featured at the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce’s State of the Texas Tech System Luncheon, presented by AimBank.

The luncheon, which will feature Chancellor Robert Duncan, Texas Tech President M. Duane Nellis, PhD, and TTU Health Sciences Center President Tedd Mitchell, M.D., will be on Wed., Sept. 23, at the Overton Hotel and Conference Center, beginning at 11:45 a.m. Ticket’s are $35 for Chamber members and $45 for non-members.

Make Plans to Attend the 2015 Texas Tech Football Kickoff Breakfast

Education Luncheon focuses on Workforce & Early Childhood Development

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce will host its 2015 Football Kickoff Breakfast on Wed., Aug. 26, at the Overton Hotel and Conference Center.

The event begins with the serving lines opening at 6:45 a.m. and the program beginning at 7 a.m. Texas Tech Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury will be in attendance. Accessory Depot is the presenting sponsor for the 2015 Kickoff Breakfast.

Join us as we celebrate the upcoming Texas Tech football season, with the Chamber, Chamber member businesses and the community.

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce will host a Pre-K Impact on Business Luncheon on Wed., August 5, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., at the Lubbock Scottish Rite. The luncheon will focus on early childhood development and workforce development.

Meaningful partnerships between the business community and educators through regional cooperation are essential in affecting the growth of a healthy applicant pool and job readiness, thereby preparing students to be productive citizens upon entry to the labor market in the coming years. This luncheon will aim at creating a forum by which business and education partners meet for ongoing and vigorous dialogue to address the growing need for a viable and flourishing workforce. They will also provide a bridge by which the business community and educators may meet to form.

The featured speaker will be Dr. David Anthony, Chief Executive Officer of Raise Your Hand Texas (RYHT). Dr. Anthony has dedicated his extensive and successful career to public education. Prior to joining RYHT, he led the Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District as superintendent for seven years,

during which time the district became the third-largest school district in Texas with more than 106,000 students. He also served as superintendent in McKinney ISD, Texas City ISD, Mount Pleasant ISD and High Island ISD.

A panel of local education and child development professionals will follow the presentation with a Q&A session to address the subject as well. Calling All Grillers: It’s Time for the Hub City BBQ Cook-off!It’s time to register your team for the biggest tailgate

experience on the South Plains! In its 14th year, the Hub City BBQ Cook-off is the place to be to enjoy good friends, great BBQ and some rockin’ Texas country music.

Presented by Suddenlink, the Hub City BBQ Cook-off will be Thurs., Sept. 17, and open to the public from 5-8 p.m. Teams will set up starting at 11 a.m. on Wed., Sept. 16 in order to begin cooking and have their foods ready for the competition early Thursday.

Team registration is going strong so if you’d like to compete, the time to enter your team is now! Team entry fee is $150 for the first 10’ x 20’ space, $100 for additional spaces. Graduate Intern Spotlight: Peyton Waldrip

August Business of the Month: Llano Estacado Winery

for 2015, will be considered for the Chamber’s Business of the Year award, in December 2015.

How old are you and where are you from? I am 21 years old and I’m from New Braunfels, Texas.

How long have you been an intern at the Chamber? I began my undergraduate internship with the Chamber in the fall of 2013. What do you do for the Chamber? Currently, I am a Graduate Intern working primarily in the Communications and Marketing division of the Chamber. What is your favorite Chamber event? I have had a blast getting to experience all of the Chamber events, over the last two years. It’s so hard to pick a favorite! The Chamber staff is truly a five-star group of individuals. Getting to watch these people run the top Chamber in America has truly been a privilege I will treasure forever. The opportunities I have been presented with, as well as the ones that will be presented to me in my future, because of my association with the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, are invaluable.

Education: I graduated, Magna Cum Laude, with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Communications from Texas Tech University in May 2015. I am currently working on my Masters of Agribusiness at Texas Tech. I am scheduled to graduate in May 2016.

Where do you see yourself after graduation? I’m not sure what my future holds, professionally. I’m very open-minded to the world of opportunities that waits for me upon graduation. I have especially enjoyed the graphic design aspect of my job at the Chamber. I also love kids. I would love to teach. It’s so rewarding to see the positive impact you can make on a child’s life.

Other: When I’m not in class or working at the Chamber, I like to travel. I also enjoy spending time with friends watching live music.

Congratulations to the August Business of the Month, Llano Estacado Winery! Llano Estacado Winery has been a member of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce since 1983.

Mike Laughlin, Tasting Room Manager, believes one of the best things of being a member of the Chamber is how close all of the member businesses are with one another.

“Since becoming very active in the Chamber a couple years ago, we have increased our visibility across Lubbock and have been fortunate enough to become active with many great organizations,” stated Laughlin.

Laughlin said that Llano Estacado Winery’s favorite event is the Hub City BBQ, but they are involved in a multitude of events.

“We are involved in all the major Chamber events, Business Expo, Chamber Golf Classic and the Hub City BBQ. We also host both a Business After Hours and Young Professionals of Lubbock’s First Tuesday Networking each year,” said Laughlin.

The winery has several employees that serve on the Chamber’s various committees including Tasting Room

Manager, Mike Laughlin. He has been a Team Captain for the Ambassador Program for the past two years and Laughlin will continue his leadership role as the Ambassador Co-Chairman in 2016.

Llano Estacado Winery has continued to grow its foot print in the Lubbock Community over the years. Earlier this year the winery opened a new tasting room and it will open up its new event center later this fall.

“As we move forward with our new Tasting Room and Private Event Center we look forward to inviting more of our local business partners out to enjoy the largest

premium winery in Texas to create lots of new memories out here,” said Laughlin.

Chamber to Host State Legislative Forum and ReceptionIn a half-day session, the Lubbock Chamber Legislative

Forum, presented by the Lubbock Association of REALTORS, connects business leaders from Lubbock and throughout the area to top state lawmakers to discuss key West Texas issues.

Texas enjoys a healthy economic environment, especially after the last Texas State Legislative Session. After a Texas State Legislative session that proved to be a success for businesses of all sizes, Rep. Dustin Burrows recapped the debates and major wins during the Chamber’s Government Relations Committee meeting last month.

From franchise tax relief to transportation funding, state leaders tackled the issues essential to doing business in Texas, according to the Freshman Representative from Lubbock. Burrows addressed a number of the Chamber’s legislative priorities in discussions on the House floor and actively communicated with the Chamber about important issues throughout the session.

After his first session, Burrows said he is eager to return to Austin and continue the work he started in 2015.

Working with elected officials like Rep. Burrows throughout the year ensures that the voice of the Chamber’s near-2,000 member businesses is heard. Advocacy is essential to the Chamber’s mission, and Rep. Burrows’ update to the Government Relations Committee highlights those efforts. Meetings like this allow Chamber members to not only hear from their elected officials but to also develop strong and lasting relationships with them.

Actively engaging with those in office is critical to ensuring the business community is well represented in decisions at every level of government.

Chamber Leadership Division2015-2016 New Century Leadership Class Announced

Why did you chose to be a member of the Young Professionals of Lubbock? To start connecting dots with the people that will be in charge of Lubbock's future. How long have you been a YPL member?I have been a part of Young Professionals since 2008. What do you feel is the most rewarding part of being a YPL member? Making new friends and business contacts.

Where do you work? Twisted Root Burger Company

What is your position? Owner Operator What all does your position entail? What doesn't it entail? Daily operations of our current location and we are beginning to work on setting up a second location.

How long have you been with your current company? One year.

Modeled after the Leadership Lubbock program and created in 1996-1997 as a result of a Leadership Lubbock class project, New Century Leadership targets high school juniors in Lubbock area high schools, both public and private. The eight-month program begins in September and classes are held one day each month during school hours, culminating in an end-of-year banquet in April.

Upon completion of the program the participants will have an understanding of our city and its strengths and weaknesses as well as gain leadership skills and principles, thus becoming well-rounded citizens and leaders that will lead the way in building a stronger community.

Why did you choose to become part of the Leadership Lubbock Steering Committee?I absolutely loved my time in the Leadership Lubbock class, and I wasn’t ready to leave when the class ended! I am thrilled to have the opportunity to pour back into an organization that has done so much for me and my knowledge and love for the Lubbock

community. Also, we have a great committee this year, and I have so enjoyed getting to serve with such great friends. How long have you been associated with Leadership Lubbock? I am a graduate of the 2013-2014 class, and this is my first year with the Steering Committee.

What are some of your favorite Leadership Lubbock events to attend? To be honest, I cannot pick a favorite. Each class day is themed toward various aspects of the community and I love them all! What do you feel is the most rewarding part of the Leadership Lubbock Steering Committee? The Leadership Lubbock class exposes local leaders to individuals, businesses and experiences they might not have the opportunity to experience otherwise. It is fun to watch the various connections and friendships that are formed throughout the class, and to also watch people

find interests and passions within in the community that they might not have even known about otherwise. We are exposed to so many opportunities to get involved with the community through this program – there is truly something for everyone.

Why is the Leadership Lubbock program important to you? I am not from Lubbock originally, but have lived here for 11 years. Leadership Lubbock is the best and most comprehensive program I have seen that allows a person to get to know the ins and outs of this wonderful community, from our history to agriculture to sports to arts to economic development to education; I truly gained such an understanding of both the Lubbock heritage and future through this program.

Who do you work for? Benchmark Business Solutions What is your position? I am a Sales Representative. What all does your position entail? I currently cover a large territory within the Lubbock city limits where I sell Xerox Office and Production equipment, as well as our Benchmark service offering, PrintSmart. I have a passion for providing excellent customer service, and love meeting new people and businesses through my position with Benchmark. My company is also very active in the community, and allows me to volunteer in a variety of capacities, which I am so thankful for. How long have you been with your current company? I have been with Benchmark just over a year and a half.

Share some info about your family. I have been married to my husband, Spencer, for almost seven years, and we have one canine child, little Scout girl. We are both from the Dallas Fort Worth area, but are proud to consider Lubbock our home.

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce is now accepting applications for the 2016 Leadership Lubbock Class on Aug. 3. Applications must be submitted by Aug. 31 by 5 p.m.

Since its inception in 1976, Leadership Lubbock has continued to provide an outstanding leadership and community orientation program for selected Chamber business leaders. This program provides a source of leaders for the Lubbock Community by ensuring that Leadership Lubbock participants receive necessary community information/orientation and leadership skills. Leadership Lubbock is open to members of the

Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, and they are selected through an application process.

MISSION: To develop individuals of diverse backgrounds and strengths into a cohesive group of leaders committed to servant leadership and service to the community in order to positively shape the future of Lubbock.

Congratulations to Danny Soliz, June Ambassador of the Month. Soliz has been an active Ambassador since 2001 and he has served various roles in his 14 years, including Chairman of the Ambassador Program and he is currently a Team Captain.

Soliz said he became an Ambassador because of the wide variety of opportunities to network among individuals as well as new and seasoned businesses in the Lubbock community.

When asked what his favorite part of the Ambassador program was Soliz said ribbon cuttings because this allows him to meet and greet with the owner of that particular business.

“After each ribbon cutting I schedule follow-up meetings to get to know the business better so I can better understand their business needs and learn of issues they may be facing. This then allows me to let them know about Workforce Solutions South Plains and the opportunities available for them and their employees to upgrade their skill levels to better meet their needs,” stated Soliz.

Soliz has worked at Workforce Solutions of the South Plains for the past 14 years and he is currently the Director of Business Development.

“I provide Rapid Response Services to businesses that are having layoffs or closing their businesses. I’m their first point of contact to assist them and provide opportunities to their dislocated workers. I help coordinate three job fairs during the year as well as assist with the South Plains Career Expo as well as any other duties assigned,” Soliz stated about his current role in the company.

Soliz is involved in a multitude of areas within the Chamber. He is on the following committees: Business Mercado, Chamber Golf Classic, and his favorite event, the Business Expo.

“The Business Expo is a favorite because it allows more business to business networking opportunities,” Soliz said.

Outside of his Chamber involvement, Soliz is a deacon at Sunset Church of Christ working both with adults and young adults (2nd - 6th grade). He also serves on three Boards: Lubbock Girls Basketball, Inc. (President), SHRM (Ambassador) and the Children’s Home of Lubbock.

Again, congratulations to Danny Soliz for earning another Ambassador of the Month award! We appreciate his dedication to the Lubbock Chamber and the Ambassador program!
