THE DREAMERS

Page 20: iRemix Mango Street Book

I'll start by describing myself as other people see when they take a first glance at me: I'm short and wiry with bold glasses and dark blonde, messy, unmanageable hair. I don't leave the house without some sort of bag--mainly a black, one-pocket purse. When I'm walking in a familiar place alone and I'm not doing anything formal there, I almost always have my iPod or MP3 player with me, earbuds in ears. And most of the time I walk briskly, as if I'm always in a hurry. This amounts to one thing: I'm a nerd.

And I'm not just a nerd, I'm a disorganized, messy nerd. Oh, and I'm a loner who has no friends and won't amount to anything. Right? RIGHT?

Well, no.

So if I were to take people on a tour of myself, if there were three things I'd want them to know about, these would be them:

-They'd have to know about my pets. They're very near and dear to my heart, and I love them to death. I have three dogs (Sigmund, Ivan, and Michaela), a cat (Rebecca), a rat (Allie), and a few fish (Jack, Rosie, and Bob). These animals aren't empty of everything--they've each got separate personalities. -They'd have to know about my love of music. I have a CD collection of over 10 CDs, including a Led Zeppelin best-of, a Rod Stewart best-of, and my prize of the bunch, Tommy by The Who. I also have three guitars, and ADORE playing. I also play piano, and really like that as well. -Above all, they'd have to know about my family. I love my family more than anything in the world! I have a wonderful mother, an awesome father, a fantastic stepfather, a loveable little sister, great grandparents, and all sorts of other lovely relatives...too many to list. They've loved and cared for me for all 15 years of my life, and if it weren't for them, I wouldn't be where I am today. I wouldn't ask for another family, whether that sounds incredibly cliched or not.

Those who...

what do they call us the outsiders that roll through our hoods rolling up their windows clicking the locks on the doors staring through the rearview steering fast and clear of the misfits within the wiry, torn down, non-white picket fences what do they call us? when they see the guy in the straw brim Rosa's Eddie V the crooked eye guy who's Davey the baby's brother and the bum on the corner yeah that's old man lee what do they think of us? ya know?... those who can't those who ain't those who most likely won't those who don't understand us that live on Mango

by Good Will

If I gave someone a tour of myself I would only let them see the positive things about me, because people tend to stereotype others based on their race and their background. Since I am a Black male, others associate things such as drugs, violence, ignorance, gangs, as well as other degrading images. In Mango Street, Esperanza

believes that a new house or a better neighborhood will change the way others view her when they enter

her neighborhood. This is similar to what I meant when I said that I would only want people to see my

positive characteristics, so they don't make those stereotypes.

Another day... Another life takenIs this truth or i was mistaken?

Can't believe it: another Geraldo goes under.Forgive me Lord but i can't help but wonder. Why does another Geraldo... fall to the ground? And no one else makes a sound...Not a scream not a holler not a cry for helpJust moving along jus lookin out for self.

Gone in a BLINK

But we need to Step Back and EVALUATE Let's think...

Just overlooking the problem will not help (It'll expand it.)

Don't take it for granted.

TRANSPARENT Sun Blindness look to the corner there lies a brick house right next to the alley which leads to the drunkard's haven

Smoke clouds are produced as the suspect looking men become aloof they are viewed as uncouth but they feel as if they are being in tune to their roots.

stare the sun in the eye emulate its energy gulp intoxicants as the ambulance and cop cars blare ask for change, then use it to suffice the abuse of your being.

Receive stares, glares Drink until you're unaware

now you're influenced saw your father and grandfather do the same under their influence now you're considered the typical truant

but no one knows why you stare into the sun although you are surrounded with negativity there's hope for you

you're blinded by this atmospheric mass but the UV rays are not against you they want you to look past the sun look through the sky see past the galaxy

be perceived only by their character and not their habits but they are not transparent and we live in a reflective light.
