Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor

the king. - 1 Peter 2:17

4 Living in peaceI love receiving suggestions for our magazine and the adjacent page is one such suggestion which I think will be well received. Heading into the month of Spring, we have started a What’s on? calendar featuring events which hopefully you and your family or friends will find useful. If you have an event that you would like featured, please feel free to email the details to [email protected]. I look forward to watching this section grow with each passing month.

A neighbourly conversation a few days ago brought the issue of respect to my attention. Why do we need respect to gouvern our lives and what’s it’s purpose? It got me thinking that respect is probably the cornerstone for all that is good in this world - respect for our Creator, for ourselves, for one another, our possesions... the list is endless. It saddens me to hear of an incident where not only were the culprits disrepectful but the par-ents who arrived to clarify the situation were disrepectful too. We cannot afford to live our lives in a society where respect is being forgotten and we, as parents, are not taking the time to teach our children the mean-ing thereof. If we cannot set a good example, then who will our children learn their value system from? I certainly do not proclaim to be the perfect parent but my challenge to all our fellow villagers this month (whether you are a parent or not) is to try to show, teach and practice a little bit more respect.

Whether it’s a wave to the guards as you pass through the boom gate as a friendly gesture of respect for the hard work that they do, or carefully parking your car at the local supermarket ensuring that when you open your door you don’t damage another vehicle parked too close, there are many ways we can all improve on our boundarys of respect.

Imagine a world where respect reigned, we would surely all live in a very peaceful place...

‘Till next monthTracey

8Movie reviewsby courtney tink

22 Jump StreetDirector: Phil Lord and Christopher MillerGenre: Action, Comedy, CrimeStarring: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube, Peter Stormare

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are back, and are heading to college. Basically Jenko and Schmidt are here to stop another drug from being distributed, but whilst this is taking place we see that Jenko and Schmidt begin to question their choices in life and even their friendship, resulting in hilarious antics. I know that it sounds like they basically remade 21 Jump Street, but trust me on this one, if you enjoyed 21 Jump Street, you’ll love 22 Jump Street. Okay I’m going to say the one thing you’re never supposed to say about sequels… it was better than the first! The characters are developed better, the comedy is wittier and it’s just all together a better movie. Old characters are still involved in one way or another and new characters introduced will have you in stitches. I’d give this movie a definite see.

Fun fact about the film: In the new building for the Jump Street program (22 Jump Street), Schmidt comments on how Captain Dixon’s new office looks like a cube of ice. The actor who plays Captain Dixon is Ice Cube.

BlendedDirector: Frank CoraciGenre: ComedyStarring: Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Terry Crews, Bella Thorne

When Lauren (Drew Barrymore) and Jim (Adam Sandler) are set up on a blind date together, it ends up being a disaster. However, fate appears to have other plans for the two because they end up on a joint holiday together with their children, filmed at our very own Sun City. It’s a bit predictable, however I find that although the ending is sometimes obvious, how the film gets there is not and this is one of those films. I’ll admit, when I first saw the advert for the film I assumed that it would be yet another attempt to try and make us Africans appear primitive, but to be honest I loved it! Blended was fun, cute and showed off Sun City in a very flattering light. Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler have wonderful chemistry and I enjoyed seeing them together on the big-screen again after all these years.

Fun Fact about the film: The Pilanesburg Game Reserve featured in the movie does in fact have the Big 5 within it.

Page 9: Irene Town Crier Aug 14

Courtney Tink, is 19 years old and a second year BA English Studies student at TUKs. ”I love movies, I feel like there’s a movie for every feeling. My favourite genres are comedy and romance, my least favourite genres are thrillers and horrors. I can sit through almost any movie and I have an embarrassingly large DVD collection as well as the Ster-Kinekor app on my phone. I hope you enjoy my reviews, all of them are based on movies currently showing at Irene Mall (Ster-Kinekor).”

How to train your dragon 2Director: Dean DeBloisGenre: Animation, Action, FantasyStarring: Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchet, Gerhard Butler, America Ferrera, Kristin Wiig

Okay two words: utterly adorable! We follow Toothless and Hiccup in this epic tale that involves a lot more than cute baby dragons. In this film Hiccup hears of a man who considers himself the ultimate dragon enslaver and is creating a dragon army in order to rule the world. Hiccup then sets off to find this dragon whisperer. It is up to him to either reason with the dragon master, or to put an end to his reign. I found this film to be everything I was hoping it would be and more. It had a wonderful cast and it was definitely one of the few sequels to succeed. It included all of the past characters and many new ones, and the graphics that accompany the plot are breath-taking. It may be a little frightening for very young children (younger than 9), but all in all, it is a beautiful film.

Fun fact about the film: Hiccup is left-handed.

Dear Residents and ILA Members

Our village is coming back to life and even though this means that there is more beauty to take in and a few blossoms to admire, drivers seem to be in a huge hurry to leave the village! The Pioneer gate has been damaged three times in the past two weeks as a result of driver negligence and failure to ad-here to the basic rules of the road. Speeding and constant tailgating at booms and gates remains the main cause of the damage to ILA property and causes inconvenience to all villagers. Once again, we appeal to residents to respect the processes for exiting and entering the village at security or boom gates as these are there for our mutual protection.

Security

Our village security remains vigilant in the face of a nationwide increase in criminal activity. The commitment of the ILA and EBS Security cannot however make up for the oversight of homeowners in securing their own properties. Constant attention to the setting of alarms in unoccupied homes, closing and locking of gates and maintenance of security systems is the responsibility of each homeowner. It is this, in conjunction with the efforts of the broader secu-rity being delivered by the ILA, that ensures that crime is kept in check wher-ever possible.

Areas in the electric fence that offer the temptation to breach the security are being identified. Loops will be installed in the fence at these spots to facilitate faster alarm activation and security response.

Domestic help

We appreciate the response of our ILA Membership to our request for informa-tion on domestic help. Please be advised that this is an on-going request to enhance our security and we hereby remind our membership to please pro-vide the name, contact number and day of employment of their current gar-dener and domestic help (should they not have done so as yet). Details may be emailed to [email protected] and copied to [email protected].

Page 13: Irene Town Crier Aug 14

Lost animals

The number of animal related communication to membership and the resulting plethora of “lost & found” type notes stuck on entry and exit signage, is con-stantly escalating. Please could you ensure that your animals are tagged for identification purposes and where possible, have them safely held within your property? The ILA does not have the facility to hold lost and found animals at the Oval and early identification would be hugely beneficial to all concerned.

Member details

We are receiving a large number of bounce back emails. Please could our members update or verify all contact details with Alyson at [email protected]. The ILA emails security updates which highlight security concerns and threats in the village which is of concern and import to our contributing mem-bership.

ILA Meetings

The ILA committee meet on a monthly basis and all residents are welcome to attend. Should you want to be informed of the activities of the ILA or have a concern or suggestion to put forward, please feel free to attend our meeting and discuss the same. Blooming gorgeousI am passionate about gardens. This is, sadly, not the same thing as being a passionate gardener. I would much rather pick up my camera, than pick up the spade and fork.

I hope to give you a glimpse of some of the beautiful Irene gardens over the next few months.

I decided to kick off with my own garden. This is embarrassing, as my garden looks distinctly tatty for most of the year, but it has a shining moment in September when the Mandevilla is in bloom. It only lasts for about a month, but looks pretty spectacular. I hope you agree. By the way, this photo was taken a year or two ago. I recently planted Tulbaghia in the bed between the pergola and our stoep, and I am so looking forward to the picture this will create. They both flower at the same time and are a perfect match.

How well do you know your village? So you think you know the Here’s a fun challenge for you. I will publish three photos taken inside the village fence, per month, June to Dec, with questions. All you have to do is answer them correctly.

If you know the village as a result of long walks you may find some very easy, some, on the other hand, will be extremely challenging, and of course if it is your postbox or gate you will be one step ahead of the pack.

If you think you know the answers or can hunt them down, send your results to me in an e-mail and I will let you know how you did. My address: [email protected]

The full results will be published in February 2015 with the names of those individuals who got them all correct or came close. Good luck!

Peter

Four Irene Homes residents have won medals at two separate sporting events held in Western Cape.

His success was followed by that of Bridget Kabini, Prudence Mametse and Rene Coetzee who all excelled at the National Olympics Special Games while representing Gauteng in Pietermaritzburg on 9 July.

Halloween

It’s that fun time of the year again - HALLOWEEN!

Last year was a fantastic success and so we are looking to organising another fun community event this year. The Irene Association has kindly

donated the use of the Village Hall again.

We are asking if the members of the community who normally participate in Halloween and decorate their houses would rather come and decorate a trestle table with their own Halloween things and put out candy for the kids. This way the kids can safely walk around and have fun seeing all

the different tables!

Last year we had a wonderful response and hope for even more participation this year. We would love you to book a table, decorate it and put out some sweets for the kids. If you are interested please email me

on [email protected]. We can only fit in 20 tables so book fast!

If you can’t book a table then please support us with sweets donations. Those who are doing the tables go to great expense to make it fun for the kids and would really appreciate some extra candy to make sure all our

kids get a treat or two! Bring your donations on the night or email me and I will organise where to drop them off.

We will be holding a Best Costume competition for different age groups on the evening sponsored by Scrooge and Marleys who will also be there

selling exciting Halloween goodies.

So please join us in this community activity:

Friday 31 October 2014 18h00 – 19h30 Irene Village Hall

Please note we ask you not to park near the hall as it is dangerous for young children walking, please park a block away and walk down.
