1 Introduction The purpose of this document is to demonstrate how to set up both dial-up and incoming connections for a Windows computer using an Iridium 9505 or 9505A phone as a modem. Hereafter the phone will generically be referred to as an ISU (Iridium Subscriber Unit). This guide was specifically written for Windows XP but should be adaptable to Windows 2000 or Vista as well, with minor changes to some of the procedures. Setting up a new (outgoing) Dial-Up Networking configuration to another ISU user is covered in Section 3 beginning on page 5. Adding additional outgoing phone numbers to an existing Dial-Up Networking configuration is covered in Section 3.2 beginning on page 16. Setting up an incoming connection (so that remote users may connect to you) is covered in Section 4 beginning on page 24. If you will be switching between calling other users and having other users call you, please read Section 5 on page 30.

2 Setup If you have not already installed the modem driver for your ISU onto the computer/laptop you’ll be using it with, follow the instructions provided with the Iridium Data Services CD-ROM that came with your Data Kit. There is both a printed pamphlet in the CD sleeve as well as several PDF documents located on the CD itself to guide you.

3 Dial-up Connection Configuration This section will demonstrate how to configure the Dial-Up connection on a CALLING Laptop.

To create a new dial-up connection, choose Start All Programs Accessories Communications New Connection Wizard. Click Next> from the first screen of the New Connection Wizard shown in Figure 1.

In the Network Connection Type window shown in Figure 2, select Connect to the Internet, then click the Next > button.

In the Getting Ready window shown in Figure 3, select Set up my connection manually, then click the Next > button.

In the Internet Connection window shown in Figure 4, select Connect using a dial-up modem, then click the Next > button

In the Select a Device window shown in Figure 5, select a modem to use the connection and then click the Next >button. (Note: The device will be configured as a Motorola Satellite Series Data Modem but may be on a different COM port than what is shown, depending on your laptop setup).

check-boxes in this window. Note: the User name/Password you supply here must match an existing account on the remote machine that you’ll be dialing into. In the example below, the user name is “Remote” and the password is hidden with asterisks. When finished, click the Next >button.

You should now see the completion window as shown in Figure 9. Click the “Add a shortcut…” check-box and hit Finish.

On your desktop, you should now see an icon similar to that in Figure 10.

Double-click the desktop icon to launch the connection.

You will see a window as in Figure 11. Verify that the “Save this user…” check-box is checked, and the “Me only” radio button is selected, and then click the Properties button.

On the Connection Properties display in Figure 12, verify that there is only one modem checked (Note: the device will be configured as a Motorola Satellite Series Data Modem). Once verified, select the Options tab.

Figure 13 shows the dialing options. Set the “Redial Attempts” and “Time between redial attempts” to your liking, and make sure the “Redial if line is dropped” box is checked. Check the “Display progress…” check-box. Check the “Prompt for name…” check-box if you wish to be prompted for the login/password each time the connection is launched.

The Networking tab is shown in Figure 14. Networking configuration will be site specific. At a minimum, it is necessary to configure Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). If you do not need them, make sure to de-select the “Client for Microsoft Networks”, “File and Printer Sharing”, and “Intel Wireless Connection Agent” items to reduce activity on the link. Other components may or may not be checked on your setup, but only Internet should be required.

Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties to get the Internet Protocol Properties display in Figure 15.

Select the “Use the following…” radio button. You may be using a different IP address, depending on your network topology. A local system administrator should be able to assist in this configuration, or you may be able to examine the settings on other connections already present on your laptop, or the settings on another laptop.

Click the OK button to close the window in Figure 15, and the OK button to close the window in Figure 14.

3.1 Adding Additional Connections to Dial-Up To add additional outgoing connections to call other laptops, you can repeat this entire section, creating a new Dial-Up Networking connection for each new laptop to call. You may want to specify that the connections are available for “all users” so that you can run the RAS Phonebook. This tool is located in the following location:

Launching the tool brings up a connection chooser seen in Figure 16:

This tool allows you to easily choose a connection from the list of available connections.

3.2 Adding Additional Phone Numbers to a Connection As an alternative to having multiple connection setups, you may use the same modem settings for multiple phone numbers by following the steps in this section. This requires that the same username/password be used to log into each remote machine you’re calling up.

If your connection properties window is still open, proceed. If not, open it by clicking on the desktop shortcut Figure 10) you created. You should again be looking at a screen similar to Figure. Hit the “Properties” button and you’ll again see a window as in Figure 12.

Click on the Alternates button. You’ll see a screen like Figure 17:

The phone number you entered when you created this connection will be shown in the list. Make sure the phone number is highlighted (left-click on it if it isn’t) and click on the Edit button.

type a comment in the Comment field to identify this number and hit “OK.” You’ll now see that comment reflected in the phone number list. To add additional numbers, click the Add button and type in a phone number and comment, then hit “OK.” Repeat this step for as many numbers as you wish to enter. It is important to put a meaningful comment with each number so you will be able to identify the numbers when it is time to dial.

After you have added all your phone numbers, the list will look similar to Figure 19:

Make sure you properly set the “If number fails…” checkbox. If you are using this connection as a “phone book” of entries to call multiple phone numbers, you will want to de-select it. If you are using this connection to set up a service that has multiple incoming numbers, you will most likely want to check the box to cycle through the available numbers automatically if one fails to connect. Hit “OK.” On the Properties window, click on the “Options” tab.

In Figure 20, make sure the “Prompt for phone number” box is set properly. If you are using this connection as a “phone book” of entries to call multiple phone numbers, you will want to select the box. If you are using this connection to set up multiple numbers to a specific service, you will most likely want to uncheck the box so dialing begins immediately upon selecting this connection. Click “OK” to accept the changes.

3.3 Launch the Connection To initiate the dial-up connection, you can hit Start Connect To and then select the name of the connection you wish to launch, or double-click the shortcut you placed on the desktop (Figure 10). You should then see a window as in Figure 21.

If you wish this connection to start dialing as soon as you select it, rather than having to hit the Dial button, de-select the “Prompt for name and password…” check-box in Figure 13.

If you have multiple phone numbers associated with this connection (see Section 3.2), you may want to leave the “Prompt for phone number” enabled, depending on how you are using the connection.

You may need to display the drop-down list of phone numbers if you need to double-check the comment for the phone number that is already displayed in the Dial box, since a number’s comment is not displayed at this level. The last number you dialed with this connection will be in the “Dial” box.

If you click on the downward pointing arrow at the far-right of the Dial line, the list of all your phone numbers will drop-down, displaying both the number and comment for each entry, as shown in Figure 22.

Highlight the entry you wish to call in the drop-down box, and then click on the Dial button.

After either launching a connection that dials automatically, or by manually hitting Dial, you will see Figure 23 appear:

Once the data call connects, you will see Figure 24 appear.

Once your username and password have been verified on the remote system, you will see Figure 25 appear:

Once this window disappears, you should see the networking icon appear in your system tray as shown in the (highlighted) left-side of Figure 26:

4 Incoming Connection Configuration This section will demonstrate how to configure the Dial-up connection on a CALLED Laptop to accept incoming connections. Note: COM ports that are configured to receive incoming connections may not be able to be used by other applications (such as HyperTerminal).

Click Start All Programs Accessories Communications New Connection Wizard. Click Next> from the first screen of the New Connection Wizard (shown in Figure 1). In the window shown in Figure 27, select “Set up an advanced connection” and click Next>

As shown in Figure 28, choose Accept Incoming Connections, and click the Next> button.


Select the Satellite Series Data Modem, the click the Next> button. This dialog is displayed in Figure 29.

Choose Do not allow virtual private connections, as shown in Figure 30. Then click the Next> button.

In the Allowed Users dialog, Figure 31, Select the user that the Dial-up connections in the calling laptop was configured to call. The default will be the account logged into this laptop. Then, click the Next> button.

Figure 32 displays the protocols accepted by this connection (components other than Internet may or may not be checked in your configuration. Only Internet should be required). Highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) selection and click the Properties button.

Set the IP Address scheme as shown in Figure 33, and then click the OK button. The first number in the range (169.254.0.3 in this case) will be assigned to the receiving unit, i.e. yourself. Note that if it is important to have each laptop maintain the same IP Address regardless of whether it initiated a call or received a call, you should assign the same IP address as you did in Figure 15 here. You may choose different IP addresses than shown here if you like, keeping in mind that calling and called units should be on the same subnet. The last number will be ignored since the Allow calling computer to specify its own IP address box is checked, and can just be set one higher than the From address. Hit OK.

Click Next> on the dialog that was displayed in Figure 32.

The Completing the Network Connection Wizard dialog in Figure 34 will be displayed. The name of the connection cannot be changed, so simply click the Finish button.

The laptop is now configured to accept incoming calls. You must make sure that a User Account exists on your machine to allow remote users to connect to it. The remote users will be specifying a User Name and Password (see Figure 8) in order to “log in” to your computer.

If you do need to use the COM port that you’ve configured to handle incoming calls for another purpose (such as running HyperTerminal), you may need to right-click on the “My Network Places” desktop icon, choose Properties, right-click on the “Incoming Connections” icon, and choose Properties. Remove the check-mark from the Satellite Series Modem entry. You may have to re-boot your computer for the port to be cleared. In order to re-enable incoming connection, re-check the Satellite Series Modem from the properties sheet.

5 Switching between Inbound and Outbound Calls

You can configure a single laptop to both place calls (see Section 3) to another laptop, and to receive calls from another laptop (see Section 4). However, in order to place calls from your laptop after your laptop has acted as a receiver, you may need to do some re-configuration, especially if you use the same IP addresses for outbound and incoming connections.

When your laptop receives an incoming connection, it activates its PPP adapter. If this adapter is active when you try to place a call and the IP addresses are in conflict, you will get a networking error similar to that shown in Figure 35:

If you see this error, hit Cancel. Then choose Start Run, type in “cmd” (without the quotes), and hit Enter. A DOS shell will appear. Type “ipconfig /all”. If you see an entry for a PPP adapter as in Figure 36:

then you will need to disable the adapter. At this time, we are aware of three methods of doing this:

1. Open up a DOS shell, type “net stop remoteaccess”. Once the prompt returns, type “net start

remoteaccess”. As a side-effect, the “Incoming Connections” entry in your Network Connections list may disappear; however it will still be active and accept incoming calls. If you wish to re-display it, follow the steps in section 4, however this time all the entries (such as IP address) will be re-used from your last creation, except for the initial choice to “Set up an advanced connection”. -or-

2. Right-click on the “My Network Places” desktop icon and choose Properties. If you no longer see an “Incoming Connections” icon, you may have to re-create it by following section 4, however this time all the entries (such as IP address) will be re-used from your last creation, except for the choice to “Set up an advanced connection”. After re-creating the “Incoming Connections” icon, or if it had already been present, right-click on the “Incoming Connections” icon, and choose Delete, and choose Yes. If you again type “ipconfig /all” in your DOS shell, you should no longer see the PPP adapter listed. You may then immediately repeat section 4 to re-create the incoming connection (only if you need to have this connection available for future tests), but this time all the entries (such as IP address, etc) will be filled in for you, as you last filled them in except for the initial choice to “Set up an advanced connection”. You may just keep hitting Next> until you finish the setup. -or-

3. Reboot the laptop.

Any of the three methods you choose should disable the adaptor. You can again bring up a command tool (Start Run, type “cmd”), type “ipconfig /all” and verify that the PPP adapter entry no longer exists.

You may then proceed to make your outgoing call.
